They don't have to say it. The Rock is the only wrestler who has left the business to pursue other interests that got grilled for it. He is the only one to leave and have his love of the business questioned. No one said anything to anyone else. Therefore no one else had to come back and defend their love of the business. NO one else has to come back and explain anything but him. Now why is that?
To each his own. I just think its sad that every one who took a hiatus whether it was short or long term and did something else for a while doesn't get bothered. But the Rocks loyalty, and love for the business is questioned because he was successful. Thats the real issue. Cause keep it real, man, had his movies bombed as much as Cena's has, no one in the WORLD would care what he was doing. Much like no on in the world cares what Stone Cold is doing. He left and was doing pilots, TV shows and some movies and he hasn't had a hit yet....and NO one cares.
But because the Rock became a STAR as Dwayne Johnson, its a problem. Its just really sad man.
I'd like to say I agree but I dont. At least not fully.
I'm not sure if you saw the piece they did on the Rock where they did some history on him and his family. In the piece Rock said that he was an only child and his only friend was a video camera and he would tape himself doing all kinds of things. So I will venture to say that his first love was being in front of the camera in any capacity. That being said, his love for the business is not being questioned because as much as he grew up in it, having family that did it, father who was one of the first african american tag champions, a grandfather who ran a wrestling promotion, the reality is, all professional wrestling is, is a glorified soap opera for men. So all of the wrestlers get into wrestling to be on television. They all get into wrestling to entertain people. And though the foundation of the business is wrestling, the essence of the business as it relates to the WWE is entertainment; storyline driven. So why can't he legitimately love the business? Why can't he say that he loves fans? Why is it BS? Because he doesn't stay around? Its BS because he's not there every week? Seriously? When you've done all you can do in a certain genre whats left to do? Do it again? For what benefit? If his fans are his fans they'll be his fans no matter what he does.
I am a tried and true Boston Celtics fan. Period point blank, thats just what it is. Win or lose. I have a Boston Celtics Jersey with MY name on it. Because no matter who comes or goes, traded or whatever, I'm down with the Green Machine. Cause I'm a real fan. When the Rock left to start something different and went into movies, I continued to be a Rock fan. When he wanted to be addressed as Dwayne so that he wouldnt be typecasted and did Be Cool and played a gay body guard JUST to show he could do something different, I was STILL a fan of the Rock. I'm STILL a fan of the Rock because I'm not a fairweather fan. I've been watching wrestling for over 25 years. I remember the day that Hulk Hogan won the WWF world title. So no, i'm not just a member of the attitude era and remember only those days. So its not just a "cool" thing for me. I'm not a fan of a specific era. I'm a fan of the business.
You may not be a fan of the Rock and that's fine. That's your choice, but how can you say what he says is BS just because you don't like him? How can you question his love for this business? He entertained the heck out of us when he was a wrestler, and now he's entertaining a broader spectrum of people. How can you be against that? How can anyone?
Sounds like crab in a bucket syndrome to me.
I'm just sayin.
I can question Rock's love because he never fucking wanted to be a wrestler. If he did, he would NOT have tried so hard to make it in the NFL, he wouldn't have left. I went to a pro wrestling school and tried until I almost died, I spent a month in the hospital. I LOVE pro wrestling. I don't want to be a movie star, I wanted to be a pro wrestler.
I can be against Rock being a movie star because that's what he is. He's not a wrestler. He claims to be one, but he's not. I love it, because it works as a character. He's a great heel and a great entertainer. I like Rock as a wrestler, I don't like Rock as an actor (he's a supporting role in summer blockbusters with no acting or plot or a lead in a C level movie or disney film for christ sake, let's not get ahead of ourselves). Rock is great at what he does. I just don't believe him when he says he loves it. I don't think Cena would leave if he had the choice. On the John Cena DVD that I watched on Netflix, the camera is following him around, Cena is at ESPN eating in the cafeteria, probably doesn't even know the camera is on him, and this is waaay before Rock vs Cena was ever thought of so it's not like he was pushing it. A guy from ESPN is just shooting the breeze with him and asks "you want to get into movies" Cena says "no" and the guy looks confused and Cena basically says that he loves it. The camera was at a distance, it wasn't an on TV interview, it was the WWE camera following Cena around and he was eating in a mostly empty cafeteria before (or maybe after?) he went on for ESPN. So either Cena is amazing at constantly staying in character or he REALLY loves pro wrestling.
Think of it like a movie. If these guys are playing characters out of their everyday life and on TV to convince me of something, Rock has pulled a David Arquette at convincing me he loves pro wrestling, Cena is about a Daniel Day-Lewis.
The rock as a "movie" star is over hyped. Journey to the Center of the Earth....TWO?! Are you fucking kidding me. Rock is a B lister at best. He's "that guy who kinda looks like Vin Diesel". Yea, he's a successful "movie star" but he's not going to win any awards and he will always be "that one guy".
My girlfriend has started watching wrestling with me. she's as unbiased as it comes. I remember watching Race to Witch Mountain with her at her parents house and the WHOLE TIME her family, who doesn't watch wrestling, made fun of how awful Rock was. Then it was like "wasn't he a boxer or a wrestler or something?" Because in the grand scheme of things, pro wrestling is the ONLY place Rock is truly appreciated and that's probably why he came back. He's not this big huge movie star he's made out to be.
Which is also why he irks some people. Most people realize that his movies are cheesey godawful midsummer fodder, and if it's a franchise flick he's in a smaller role and it's fairly successful. That's about the extent of his "movie star" appeal.
I'm not a huge Rock fan obviously, I appreciate his work, I'm just explaining why a lot of people don't believe him when he says he loves pro wrestling.
I think people who relate to Rock don't actually love pro wrestling either. I can't fathom quitting wrestling to be a movie star. It doesn't make sense to me. I LOVE pro wrestling. Movies are okay. The goal isn't to become famous, it's to be remembered as the best pro wrestler (to me).
