I wouldn't say is so much a punishment as it is a reset button push. Get him out of the main event for a while and see if it helps his disconnect with the fans at all.

There'll be some who will hate regardless of what he does, however a 'reset' like this is the only chance he has to get off the 'stink' of the rocket-ship ME push of the past 2 years.
