WWE NXT
Matt Striker opens the show and talks about the 100th episode of NXT coming up. Striker introduces Justin Gabriel, who is quickly interrupted by Heath Slater. A match between Slater and Gabriel is up next.

Justin Gabriel defeated Heath Slater in a long match with the 450 splash.

Maxine is backstage talking to Derrick Bateman about his match and how he messed up. He kisses her, and she proceeds to slap him. They walk away separately.

Darren Young is out for guest commentary for the Percy Watson vs Tyson Kidd match. Kidd defeated Watson after Young distracted Watson. Young then hit his finisher on Watson and raised Kidd's hand.

Derrick Bateman vs. Johnny Curtis is up next. Aksana is backstage talking to Maxine before the match.

Bateman defeated Curtis by pinfall. The show ends with Maxine slapping Curtis and then kissing him. Curtis and Maxine left the ring together while Bateman is left stunned in the ring.

Dave Meltzer stated on the Dec. 27 edition of Wrestling Observer Radio (available here) that Zack Ryder being placed in a romance storyline with Eve Torres and away from the main event scene stems from the staggeringly low quarter hour rating for last week's Raw SuperShow main event, which saw Long Island Iced-Z, CM Punk and Daniel Bryan stand tall against The Miz, Alberto Del Rio and Dolph Ziggler.

The main event garnered a 2.67 cable rating (2.55 for the first half of the bout), which was the lowest-rated main event on Raw in 2011 and possibly the lowest since Dec. 9, 1997 for a non-holiday show in its regular time slot. The overrun gained 59,000 viewers, which is considered terrible.

The Ryder/Torres storyline is slated to continue for at least a few weeks.

-- Tony Chimel resurfaced at Tuesday's WWE television tapings in Indianapolis, Indiana as the ring announcer for WWE NXT and WWE Superstars. He takes over for Eden Stiles, who parted ways with the organization last week. Chimel was removed as SmackDown ring announcer earlier this month due to Lilian Garcia's return to the company.

The official Twitter feed of the WWE Insider reported the following Tuesday evening:

"BREAKING: @RandyOrton injured at #Smackdown in Indianapolis tonight. More details to follow on WWE.com as they become available."

SmackDown, Airing Friday:

* Booker T opened the show in the ring and is interrupted by Cody Rhodes. Goldust comes out without his makeup and tells Cody not to talk bad about the Legends. Booker challenges Cody to a rematch for the Intercontinental Title next week. Booker left and Cody attacked his brother, leading to Booker running back for the save.

* Jinder Mahal beat Ted DiBiase.

* Drew McIntyre walks in on Teddy Long and Aksana and is ready for his SmackDown return match.

* Kaitlyn and Alicia Fox beat Tamina and Natalya. Tamina turned on Natalya after the match.

* Big Show interrupts Daniel Bryan and AJ Lee. Teddy Long comes out and announces Show vs. David Otunga tonight with Mark Henry in his corner.

* Hunico beat Justin Gabriel.

* Big Show beat David Otunga. Daniel Bryan came out during the match and attacked Henry.

* Ezekiel Jackson beat Drew McIntyre.

* Sheamus comes out and talks about the Royal Rumble. Hornswoggle joins him and says he will win the Rumble. Heath Slater comes out to trash Sheamus and gets thrown out of the ring.

* Sheamus defeated Heath Slater.

* Teddy Long announces Bryan vs. Big Show next week for the World Heavyweight Title.

* Wade Barrett defeated Randy Orton in a Falls Count Anywhere Match after throwing him down a flight of stairs in the back.

That falls count anywhere match sounds good, but bummer if Orton is injured seriously.

- As noted earlier, Randy Orton was injured at last night's SmackDown tapings in Indianapolis during the Falls Count Anywhere main event against Wade Barrett. Orton has been removed from this week's live events.

Word backstage was that Orton suffered some sort of back injury and it has to do with at least one of the discs in his back. Orton could miss up to 6 months of in-ring time, causing him to miss WrestleMania 28. An official update from WWE should be available soon.

Apparently the shot was, Barrett and Orton went through the door, the cameraman followed, and we see Orton at the bottom of the stairs and Barrett at the top. So I'm guessing Orton's had back problems recently and this was a way to take him out for a bit.

If Orton is severely injured, what happens to Barrett? This may seem inconsiderate considering Orton may miss the biggest PPV but Barrett was on a roll.

Juat to add a bit more, apparently Barrett and Orton went in a lift to get to the top of the flight of stairs. This would also buy some time for Orton to make it look like Barrett pushed him down (i.e. lie at the bottom of the stairs and pretend to be in pain).

Yeah, he's developed a bad back from carrying everybody.

I went there.

I am dissapoint if he is out for 6 months. He's been awesome this year and it'd be a shame to see him gone for so long. Nice little notch on Barrett's belt though.

What's worse is that we'll be missing out on a huge pop and a house clearing in the Rumble this year. Not as great a crime as Punk being in the bloody title match instead of stealing the show for the third year running, but still a crime.

I doubt this is true but

- Super Luchas Magazine out of Mexico, which has been a credible source in the past, has started the rumor online that current TNA star and #1 contender to their World Heavyweight Title Jeff Hardy is the man behind WWE's cryptic January 2nd, 2012 videos and that Hardy will make his return to WWE soon.

A source close to Hardy and TNA reports that the rumor is just as it sounds - completely false.

So Barret beats DBD at the Rumble, the injured Orton returns to win the Rumble or EC and we get Barret vs. Orton at mania for the world title.

RANDY ORTON UPDATE, SHOOTING DOWN A FALSE REPORT
By Mike Johnson on 2011-12-28 15:12:10
The ending to Smackdown for this Friday was dictated by Randy Orton's back issues. The injury was something Orton had been dealing with in recent weeks, so his match with Wade Barrett was company's way of writing the injury into the storylines.

While we do not have any update on the severity of the injury at this time, I want to note that an inaccurate report is floating around citing PWInsider.com as reporting Orton would miss Wrestlemania due to a slipped disc. Nothing of the sort was written or stated on either the free or Elite versions of PWInsider.com. Whoever published that report is stating an absolute lie, so remember that when you decide what outlets are legitimate and worth your time.
