Becker told me who he's picking, and it's a great choice. It's between him and BC's choice of Marilyn Manson as to who I think has the best choices right off the bat.

I'm very surprised though no one selected Madonna. Such an easy argument could have been made for her.

The wife and I debated this last night. She says she would have gone with Sinead O'Connor, but she also thinks she'd be able to make a case for Rage Against the Machine.

Eminem was the first musician that came to mind for me. If you want to know why, view Numbers' section. I'll be posting there.

I made that suggestion actually considering he was highly controversial when he first became popular because his dancing and singing were thought to be influenced by black artists.

And the whole hips shaking which was a big deal at the time. Also as usual I prefer mainstream selections for things like this as while NWA and Eminem (ok he was mainstream) were controversial, even in the peak of their popularity a lot of people couldn't have told you anything about them if their lives depended on it. Guys like Jackson and Elvis, everyone knew.

Those were different times. Television had a total of about 13 channels back then while Eminem's reign came when there were over 300. But it doesn't mean that Elvis was MORE controversial because more people heard of him.

Of course, I'm not saying Elvis WASN'T controversial because then I'd be lying through my teeth. However, Eminem takes the cake.

Erm....Straight Outta Compton went double platinum without any radio play or touring and 80% of the record sales from that album came from the suburbs. You can't tell me NWA didn't break out into the mainstream when they sold over 2 million records mostly to suburban areas and didn't have MTV or any other media playing their music. That is impressive in it's own right.

Oh NWA was definitely controversial. I'm not questioning that at all. I just think there's a case for Elvis to be ahead of them.

Actually I was referring to you saying NWA wasn't really mainstream and I was just giving numbers to prove otherwise. I'll make my post on why NWA was the most controversial later on today some time.

Ah I see.

I get that they were very successful, but I've barely ever heard anyone other than really big rap fans talk about them. That to me takes away a bit of the mainstream aspect. Then again I know very little about music.

Awesome!

Damn impressive. Can't deny they were influential because for the time and with what they were saying, it reached out and affected millions.

And Dr Dre came from NWA, which also speaks volumes for their influence on the music.

While Ty is right on point here, that still doesn't make them the MOST controversial musicians in history. They're controversial, but how can they compare with artists like Elvis, Manson, Eminem, Johnny Cash, Madonna... I can go on.

Why was Eminem controversial? He made shock value comments on two albums and toned down immediately after that. NWA meanwhile made statements about the horrid conditions of the LA ghettos that brought attention to the plight there and also brought forth the underlying current of police brutality and racial profiling. Not only on top of this but they also brought forward the gang violence and mentality that was also prevalent of their area.

Out of the four chosen I would say NWA is the best pick of the group. I'm not going into major detail as I"m saving it for a post that actually counts.

Of the four listed, yeah NWA probably is the best pick. Jackson's music isn't controversial, Manson is pretty much an admitted character rather than a controversial act, and Eminem is probably second.

Honestly Eminem is my favorite rapper, and I'll argue with people all day and defend him as one of if not the greatest rapper of all time. But while he was very controversial he wasn't even the most controversial rapper ever. It's hard to be the most controversial in all of music when you aren't even that in your own genre. Tupac is easily the most controversial rapper.
