So we all saw that Nexus was beaten by Team Raw(mainly SuperCena) at SummerSlam. Many(if not everyone) felt that Nexus NEEDED to win that match in order to establish them as a serious threat, ala the NWO's domination of WCW at the beginning.
The following night on Raw Nexus was able to select their team Raw opponent for their match. If any member lost they were out of the group. We saw outside interference, count outs, and 2 clean pinfalls for the Nexus. And then we got John Cena vs Darren Young. I don't think anyone expected Young to beat Cena. Young showed guts and put up a tremendous effort against Cena.(Arguably, showing what Nexus SHOULD have been looking for) Nexus then beat down Darren Young the way they have been doing to Cena in the past. Justin Gabriel seemed to show a bit of remorse before hitting his blank-stare 450-splash. Sign of weakness?
Over the week, at a house show, Skip Sheffield broke his ankle. That is usually a 6-8 week injury and may require surgery. Skip was being built huge in Nexus, and was undoubtedly second in command behind Barrett. He was the enforcer of the group. This is a huge blow to Nexus in its own right.
Now last night on Raw, we saw the Nexus TWICE. They came to the entrance ramp for the GM's announcement that they would be able to receive title shots, and Barrett telling Sheamus the truce was off. Later in the night Wade Barrett came to the ring as a co-#1 Contender. He was then beat down by Sheamus, Edge, Jericho, Cena, and Orton. Nexus did not even attempt to make the save.
This is, without a doubt, the weakest showing yet from Nexus. We barely saw them, and when we did they did not look very strong. So my immediate thought, and I admit probably over thinking, was that this looks like the beginning of the end for the Nexus.
So taking all of this into consideration, What are your thoughts? Does it seem like things are adding up to the downfall of Nexus? or Is this merely a small misstep that can be corrected in coming weeks?
If you think this is leading to the end, What would it take to re-establish Nexus as dominant?
Here are my thoughts on the topic:
I do think there are many signs that may be pointing the the soon to be downfall of Nexus. I can't say I agree with it either. I understand the WWE not wanting to make Cena look weak, but he needed to lose that match at SummerSlam. Nexus needed to be seen as dominant. Then it would be even better when Cena made his comeback and took down Nexus. It could have been an even bigger payoff for Cena and WWE. That was a huge mistake, that might have killed all of the momentum Nexus had gained. With the lack of impact Nexus made last night, I began to see them as just "guys on the roster" now. I didn't see them as a frightening force anymore. I know it seems like fast judgement, but if it happened to me, it had to have happened to many others.
I think if Barrett were to win the title at Night Of Champions it would regain the momentum lost over the recent weeks, not to mention probably gain more heat. Beating the likes of Cena, Orton, Edge, Jericho and Sheamus(a superstar in the making) would catapult Barrett to the top. Then, and only then, would Nexus be back on top of Raw and able to obtain the dominance. I don't think anything short of the WWE title can put them back in that position. The loss of Sheffield hurts. He was perhaps Nexus' only legit contender for the US or Tag team titles. I think Nexus needs to gain the WWE championship to put them back in control.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the future of Nexus.
