I actually cannot see the logic in this at all.
Of all the guys (outside of Barrett), I doubt that Gabriel is in the best position to capture a mid-card Championship and giving it to him would only serve to reinforce the view that the mid-card Championships are for the people who lack the size or fortune to get into the main event – for the most part anyway.
I mean, let us look at some of the last mid-card Champions and see how their careers have went for them, shall we?
R-Truth – The less that is said about his reign, the better. It was tiny and he was eventually brushed aside by The Miz after being handed the US Championship. He is now feuding with people like Ted DiBiase and he has gone nowhere.
Drew McIntyre – You can say all you want about his Visa issues but at the end of the day, he only has himself to blame for being so pathetically boring that no one wants to see him perform.
MVP – Again, he showed some promise but is still feuding with the mid-card after being with the WWE for long enough to typically merit a place in the main event scene on a show. I wouldn’t say he has been bad at anything and his mid-card reign was pretty damn good. Yet, look where he is now.
The fact of the matter, is that outside of The Miz, the mid-card talent just don’t really have what it takes to make that jump and that is not how I see Gabriel. I think once all of this is said and done, you will see Gabriel pushing for a spot in the main event and a mid-card Championship would basically tear that opportunity away from him.
