Strictly speaking, it is possibly to push someone without them having to instantly become the brands top face and most heavily protected superstar.
Triple H was protected in that match because he's the company’s top face at the moment; he's the champion, the chief spokesman and is going to be the main draw for the main event for WWE's next PPV. Therefore, I’m sure the logic the WWE is going by is that, in order to secure a strong bye rate for their next PPV it is important that the lead draw carries the maximum possible amount of momentum.
I’ll be totally honest with you, personally I think the finish was the wrong decision (although I think the fewer contrived DQ finishes the better), but for one, I don’t think it actually mattered one iota. For two, it probably gave the live crowd what they wanted to see, and for three, I rather suspect that the WWE know their own business rather better than a bunch of opinionated nobodies (us) on the internet.
Kennedy is getting a push, possibly tonight’s antics indicate that it is not the rocket powered, interstellar, instant main event push that Wes seems to thing will cause the entire company to implode by its absence, but it’s still a push, a major, extended program and an excursion into the murky waters of the main event. That being the case I honestly cannot see what all the Kennedy fans are getting so god damn upset over.

Im not protecting anyone. I just fail to see why every last little step of everything Trips does has to be so damn overanalyzed.
Kennedy is a face. he was in the main event. therefore making him a.....

main event face. He fought off 14 guys for a while, and got two finishers, of the brands last two chamos done on him. Trips got the hot tag/action becuase he had to fight off the huge team less, therefore he will obviously have more energy to fight them off. And then he gets owned by the guy HE Is currently in a feud with.

His first pop tonight was glorious! Whatchu talkin bout. 
It's ok man, really...it's ok. Kennedy still has that movie coming out next year, he is getting this push still, end of.
I wouldn't even call this a minor setback, just all part of the plan. I'm still pissed a little, but being a Trips fan I can't stay mad long.

Kennedys first pop was Epic, and they were chanting his name. Im sure becuase of tonights finish, thats not gonna change

I don't think Kennedy was in taking the pin. I mean, think about it this way. What would've looked weakER?
The W.W.E. Champion being pinned by Chavo Guerrero, a meaningless former 3rd brand World Champion on the downfall.. or Mr. Kennedy, who is two weeks IN to his unknown push, against Regal, not Main Eventhood??
Obviously Kennedy isn't going to win a billion matches to start off. Thats not how face pushes work. Kennedy will continue to drop matches in unfair fashion. And Triple H. took his "punishment" with the R.K.O. So how much WORSE would it of looked on H.H.H. to take both a pinfall loss, then an R.K.O.?
Meanwhile, Kennedy does what exactly?? Nothing in the Main Event other than be another random person?
Kennedy didn't lose any of his push. And his push is against Regal, not becoming a Main Eventer. Regal/Kennedy aren't IN the Main Event (yet) so....

See, now you bring me into this. His pop this week, was nothing compared to last week. And I did NOT hear them chanting his name. I heard them chanting "Regal sucks."
If Kennedy's name got switched to "sucks" then okay.

The pop goes up and comes down immediately. Last week, it went up from the moment he came out, all the way until he got in the ring.

Then I'm stone-def, because I did NOT hear a Kennedy chant. At all. Anywhere. I heard them pop when his music hit, die down before he barely got out on stage. Then pop with Kane's mention of being his first opponent, before the boo's following the handicap announcement.
