Final Fantasy 4 Walkthrough with Dagger

Party combination #13: Cecil, Rosa, Rydia, Yang, Edward

This party is playable very early in the game (sort of). Cecil as a Dark Knight and Rydia as a child were in the orginal version of this party, which was the very first full party of 5 characters. It's a group that has one major flaw. Cecil and Yang might struggle being the only characters in the front row. You don't want Edward or the casters up there, but if for old time's sake you want to give this group a try then go for it. It could be a fun challenge.

Recommended Formation
Cecil and Yang in the front row. Rosa, Edward, and Rydia in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Good.

Party combination #14: Cecil, Rosa, Rydia, Yang, Palom

A magic oriented party. Both of the offensive casters are in the group so that increases the damage potential a lot, but this group leaves a lot to be desired in terms of defense. Cecil and Yang will be working hard to protect the casters and Rosa will be healing. A lot. Not really recommended, although not awful.

Recommended Formation
Cecil and Yang in the front row. Rosa, Palom, and Rydia in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Average.

Party combination #15: Cecil, Rosa, Rydia, Yang, Porom

Another magic oriented party. Both of the restorative casters are in the group so the fighters are not having to work as hard in defending the casters as they would be in Cecil/Rosa/Rydia/Yang/Palom. Rosa and Porom will likely be healing constantly. It can work if you're on a higher level, but it will be a challenge.

Recommended Formation
Cecil and Yang in the front row. Rosa, Porom, and Rydia in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Good.

Party combination #16: Cecil, Rosa, Rydia, Cid, Edward

This is an ok group. Cid and Cecil are strong enough to handle protecting the other three and Edward can still do some damage from the back with his new weapons from the Lunar Ruins. It's is a rather balanced group and might be worth a try.

Recommended Formation
Cecil and Cid in the front row. Rosa, Edward, and Rydia in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Good.

Party combination #17: Cecil, Rosa, Rydia, Cid, Palom

This group can work within the right formation and has a large amount of damage potential. There are far better groups out there though. It leaves a lot to be desired in attacking other than offensive casting.

Recommended Formation
Cecil and Cid in the front row. Rosa, Palom, and Rydia in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Good.

Party combination #18: Cecil, Rosa, Rydia, Cid, Porom

Cecil and Cid will be able to protect the casters. The inclusion of both healers enables them to return the favor by healing the two fighters each round. The group is not the best in terms of dealing damage, but between the two fighters and the two healers, Rydia is basically free to summon to all she wants provided her MP does not run out. If you want a group where the casters outnumber the fighters, you might like this one.

Recommended Formation
Cecil and Cid in the front row. Rosa, Porom, and Rydia in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Good.

Party combination #19: Cecil, Rosa, Rydia, Edward, Palom

This is an awful party. Cecil is the only one in it who is able to withstand taking a lot of damage and you must have a minimum of 2 in the front row. So since Rosa must be able to live long enough to heal, you end up having to decide between Edward, Rydia, and Palom for who is basically going to have to take one for the team.

Recommended Formation
Cecil and Edward in the front row. Rosa, Rydia, and Palom in the back row. There are no formations where this party can be effective, but you need Edward less than you need your offensive casters. He can always use the Hide command if things are not going your way, but that opens up your back row members for being attacked more. It sucks no matter who you put in the front with Cecil.

Overall Thoughts
Very Bad.

Party combination #20: Cecil, Rosa, Rydia, Edward, Porom

Not that great of a party. The inclusion of both healers is beneficial, but somebody has to be in the front row with Cecil. Not recommended at all unless you want a massive challenge.

Recommended Formation
Cecil and Edward in the front row. Rosa, Rydia, and Porom in the back row. You need the healers and Rydia to be protected more than Edward. Rosa and Porom will have to heal non-stop every single turn. Edward can use his Hide command if he needs to be safe.

Overall Thoughts
Bad.

Party combination #21: Cecil, Rosa, Rydia, Palom, Porom

This has all 4 of the casters in it. The bad news is, someone has to be in the front row with Cecil. It is not a group that I recommend unless you are at an extremely high level and even then it's really not worth it.

Recommended Formation
Cecil and Palom in the front row. Rosa, Rydia, and Porom in the back row. Palom is the least important in this party combination. Rydia is the superior offensive caster so she will need the back row position's protection more. Rosa and Porom are there for constant healing, but even then there is no formation for this group that doesn't suck.

Overall Thoughts
Bad.

Party combination #22: Cecil, Rosa, Kain, Edge, Yang

paladinv.png
rosap.png

This has four fighters in it, so you'll be able to do a lot of damage and Rosa will have protection. You might struggle some against enemies that require offensive spells to be cast on them in order to damage them. Otherwise this team can get the job done.

Recommended Formation
Cecil, Kain, and Yang in the front row. Edge and Rosa in the back row. Edge has the worst defense out of the fighters in this group and has a couple of ranged weapons he can rely on.

Overall Thoughts
Good.

Party combination #23: Cecil, Rosa, Kain, Edge, Cid

It was actually possible to get this party on the original SNES version if you used the game genie code that allowed you to walk through walls. You had to walk through walls in the Dwarven Castle to where you got out through the basement without ever talking to the king. Cid then takes the place of Rydia in the final lineup. His equipment sucked toward the end though, since he was not meant to be there anymore. As for strategies with this group, it is very similar to Cecil/Rosa/Kain/Edge/Yang but with a better defense.

Recommended Formation
Cecil, Cid, and Kain in the front row. Edge and Rosa in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Good.

Party combination #24: Cecil, Rosa, Kain, Edge, Edward

A somewhat balanced group. It will struggle against enemies that require you to cast offensive spells on them, but it is another to consider if you want a challenge.

Recommended Formation
Cecil and Kain in the front row. Edge, Edward, and Rosa in the back row. Cecil and Kain are strong enough to be able to protect the others, although you can put Edge in the front if you wish.

Overall Thoughts
Average.

Party combination #25: Cecil, Rosa, Kain, Edge, Palom

This is a good and balanced team. It's the canonical final lineup but with Palom instead of Rydia. Palom fulfills the need for an offensive caster, and this group is an alternative for the canonical final party that works quite well. The original group is better though, as Rydia outclasses Palom in casting.

Recommended Formation
Cecil and Kain in the front row. Rosa, Edge, and Palom in the back row. Cecil and Kain are strong enough to protect the others, although Edge can also be in the front row with them if you wish.

Overall Thoughts
Very Good.

This group has both of the restorative casters. While it offers a multitude of support for the fighters, you still lack an offensive caster and some monsters might give you a difficult time otherwise. There are better groups than this one.

Recommended Formation
Cecil and Kain in the front row. Rosa, Porom, and Edge in the back row. Edge can be in the front row in this group though too if you wish.

Overall Thoughts
Average.

Party combination #27: Cecil, Rosa, Kain, Yang, Cid

This party was playable in the main storyline during the last portion of the Tower of Zot and up until you speak to the king in the Dwarven Castle. It's a fun lineup to use despite the lack of an offensive caster which is the only flaw of this party. Rosa could not possibly be any more protected than what this group offers.

Recommended Formation
Cecil, Yang, and Cid in the front row. Kain and Rosa in the back row. You have 4 fighters and one of them has the Jump ability which still does the same amount of damage in the back row. Yang has worse defense, but someone has to be in the back row with Rosa and only Kain can fight from there without losing too much of his damage potential.

Overall Thoughts
Good.

The damage potential is up there plus your three fighters provide protection for Rosa and Edward. However, you lack an offensive caster. The result is an average usefulness rating. I don't have any particular strong thoughts in support or against this party. It's quite average.

Recommended Formation
Cecil, Yang, and Kain in the front row. Edward and Rosa in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Average.

This is a great balanced group. Rosa and Palom have a good amount of protection from the three fighters. It's another alternative for the canonical lineup that can get the job done, and quite well too. It's one of the groups I'd recommend.

Recommended Formation
Cecil, Yang, and Kain in the front row. Rosa and Palom in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Very Good.

This is an interesting lineup. Both of the healers are present, and you have the three best attackers. You do lack an offensive caster, but I still like this group. Give it a try, you might like it. At high enough levels Rosa or Porom can take care of the enemies that would require you to have an offensive caster, they do learn Holy after all. Not the best group out there, but it's a good one. The two healers will be able to keep your fighters around long enough to fully protect them.

Recommended Formation
Cecil, Kain, and Yang in the front row. Rosa and Porom in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Good.

This is an average group. It doesn't suck, but it's nothing amazing either. The three best defenders are in there, so Edward and Rosa will have protection. It lacks an offensive caster, so there is that. I don't particularly feel strongly in favor of or against this lineup.

Recommended Formation
Cecil, Cid, and Kain in the front row. Edward and Rosa in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Average.

Here we have a group that offers another good alternative for the canonical final party. The three best defenders, a healer, and an offensive caster. This is one that I recommend. It is very balanced and will get the job done nicely.

Recommended Formation
Cecil, Kain, and Cid in the front row. Rosa and Palom in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Very Good.

You won't get more protection all around than this party. The three best defenders and both healers. The fighters provide an excellent line of defense for the healers, both of which will be able to keep the fighters fighting forever if they team up in the healing department. You do lack an offensive caster, so while the more balanced teams are better overall this is arguably the most defense-oriented team you can have.

Recommended Formation
Cecil, Kain, and Cid in the front row. Rosa and Porom in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Good.

I honestly prefer having more fighters, although if you set it up right this group can work. Cecil and Kain are strong enough to defend the others, but the groups with more fighters stand a better chance. You do have a balanced group here, it's just that there are much better parties available.

Recommended Formation
Cecil and Kain in the front row. Rosa, Edward, and Palom in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Good.

Party combination #35: Cecil, Rosa, Kain, Edward, Porom

You're lacking in the offensive side of the spectrum here. Cecil and Kain might need more assistance in the fighting than what this group can provide since there is no offensive caster or third fighter. Edward can fight some from the back row, but groups with Yang, Cid, or the offensive casters will do more damage. Having both of the healers is nice though.

Recommended Formation
Cecil and Kain in the front row. Rosa, Edward, and Porom in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Average.

You'll like this group if you want a magic-oriented team. Cecil and Kain are there to defend Rosa and the twins. Both healers are present, and you have an offensive caster. Not a bad lineup, I prefer fighter oriented teams myself, but this is one you may want to try.

Recommended Formation
Cecil and Kain in the front row. Rosa, Palom, and Porom in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Good.

Party combination #37: Cecil, Rosa, Edge, Yang, Cid

A fighter-oriented team. Edge can be in the back row with Rosa so that he does not have to worry about his low defense stat. Rosa has all the protection she needs. You lack an offensive caster though. I like this group, although there are better options out there.

Recommended Formation
Cecil, Yang, and Cid in the front row. Edge and Rosa in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Good.
