Final Fantasy 4 Walkthrough with Dagger

Party combination #111: Cecil, Edge, Yang, Cid, Palom

This is pretty bad. You lack a healer, to address the biggest problem. Edge and Palom will struggle with even staying alive by the time you make it to the last few floors before the final battle. Yang and Cid will also struggle. This group can deal a ton of damage but it is not worth it. They do not stand much of a chance in the final battle or the floors leading up to it.

Recommended Formation
Cecil, Yang, and Cid in the front row. Edge and Palom in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Bad.

Party combination #112: Cecil, Edge, Yang, Cid, Porom

This party might be able to get the job done, but it will be a challenge. Porom is protected by the line of defense that Cecil, Yang, and Cid provide. Edge can fight in the back row. Porom will be busy keeping everyone healed, although if you encounter enemies that require magical abilities to defeat she will need to be able to cast Holy on them. It can be done.... you might struggle though.

Recommended Formation
Cecil, Yang, and Cid in the front row. Edge and Porom in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Good.

Party combination #113: Cecil, Edge, Yang, Edward, Palom

One of the worst party combinations possible. Cecil and Yang cannot handle all of the damage on their own, especially not without a healer. Your three remaining members all need to be in the back row. Edward and Edge can fight in the back row. Palom needs to be casting his most powerful spells. Try to inflict as much damage as possible to win battles quickly. You won't last long though. Too many people with low defense stats and no healer. Avoid this group.

Recommended Formation
Cecil and Yang in the front row. Edge, Edward, and Palom in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Very Bad.

If you want a challenge then you might like this group. You only have Cecil and Yang fighting in the front row while Edward and Edge fight from the back row. Porom is there for healing purposes but she could use more protection. At higher levels this group should be able to pull it off. Go ahead and give them a try if you want.

Recommended Formation
Cecil and Yang in the front row. Edge, Edward, and Porom in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Good.

This is fairly balanced. You have several members with low defense stats though. Porom will be busy healing. Palom needs to cast his most poweful spells. Have Edge fight in the back row. Cecil and Yang are your line of defense. The group would benefit more from a third fighter although at higher levels they should be able to pull a victory off. Worth a look, but better groups are available.

Recommended Formation
Cecil and Yang in the front row. Edge, Palom, and Porom in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Good.

This isn't a very good party. Cecil and Cid will be taking a ton of damage to protect the two back row attackers and your caster. The team lacks a much needed healer which will make them suffer when you get to the last few floors. Good luck, your odds of survival are quite low.

Recommended Formation
Cecil and Cid in the front row. Edge, Palom, and Edward in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Bad.

This a decent party. You have Cecil and Cid to provide the line of defense while Edge and Edward can fight from the back row, and Porom fills the role of the much needed healer. You might have a little trouble against enemies that require magical abilities to defeat but Porom does know Holy if she has the MP to cast it and the others can afford to go a turn without being healed. It can be done but might be tough.

Recommended Formation
Cecil and Cid in the front row. Edge, Porom, and Edward in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Good.

A balanced party that resembles the canonical final party but with alternative characters replacing everyone but Edge. Porom replaces Rosa as the healer, Palom replaces Rydia as the offensive caster, and Cid replaces Kain as the fighter. Edge should be in the back row. The group is one you might enjoy if you want an alternative to the canonical lineup even though all of the replacements are outclassed in their respective roles by those in the canonical team. Still a group that is absolutely worth a try though.

Recommended Formation
Cecil and Cid in the front row. Edge, Porom, and Palom in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Very Good.

This party comes close to being balanced, but it has one massive flaw. The ONLY character with a good defense is Cecil. You can only place 3 people in the back row for further protection, so Edge is stuck in the front row. Edward is useless up there and the twins must be in the back row. Cecil and Edge do not form an effective line of defense, which leaves the three in the back row more vulnerable to being attacked. Porom cannot be counted on to heal this party as much as it would need it. It's not worth it. Avoid this lineup.

Recommended Formation
Cecil and Edge in the front row. Edward, Porom, and Palom in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Bad.

You have a very good line of defense to protect your back row attacker and your offensive caster.... but this group will struggle quite a bit without a healer. Your fighters as well as both of the back row members will eventually need to be healed. Rosa or Porom in Edward's place would make this a much better team. This group could be worth a try, but it would be extremely tough and your odds of survival are not that great.

Recommended Formation
Cecil, Cid, and Yang in the front row. Edward and Palom in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Bad.

Cecil, Cid, and Yang form a great line of defense for Edward and Porom in this party. You have a back row attacker and a healer. The only thing missing is an offensive caster but since Porom learns Holy at higher levels you might be alright in this party if your levels are high enough. It can get the job done, but there are still much better parties available.

Recommended Formation
Cecil, Cid, and Yang in the front row. Edward and Porom in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Good.

An awesome lineup! This is the alternative party made up of all of the secondary characters (minus Edward) who rejoin in the GBA version. It has a replacement for every member of the canonical final lineup and it is very balanced. Cid replaces Kain as the front row fighter, Porom replaces Rosa as the healer, Palom replaces Rydia as the offensive caster, while Yang more or less replaces Edge even though he needs to fight in the front row in order to be used effectively. This is one of the parties that I recommend the most. It is one you are likely going to enjoy using.

Recommended Formation
Cecil, Cid, and Yang in the front row. Palom and Porom in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Very Good.

An good alternative lineup to the canonical final party. Palom replaces Rydia as the offensive caster, Porom replaces Rosa as the healer, Edward more or less replaces Edge as the back row attacker, and Yang more or less replaces Kain by being the only other fighter type. This group can absolutely get the job done and while they overall are not as powerful as the canonical team, you could have a whole lot of fun playing as this group.

Recommended Formation
Cecil and Yang in the front row. Palom, Edward, and Porom in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Very Good.

You can pretty much go with an identical strategy in this party that you would with Cecil/Yang/Edward/Palom/Porom. Cid is a better defender than Yang and can take more damage, while Yang is a better attacker and can inflict more damage. Cid joins Cecil in the front row providing a line of defense needed for the two twins who fit the roles of offensive caster and healer, while Edward fights more effectively in the back row. A very fun party to use, although better parties are available.

Recommended Formation
Cecil and Cid in the front row. Palom, Edward, and Porom in the back row.

Overall Thoughts
Very Good.

That, ladies and gentlemen, brings this thread to a sad conclusion after an epic 6 month in-depth walkthrough of both the SNES and GBA versions of one of the greatest video games ever made.

Oh, and stay tuned for my next two walkthrough topics that I will likely be launching threads for next week:

Super Mario World
The Legend of Zelda: A Link To the Past

This doesn't have to be the end though. I am willing to answer any question you may have about this game. Need more help with a boss battle than what the walkthrough provided? Want to know more about a particular location or character in the game? Perhaps you want some random trivia? Or maybe you want to know about the DS remake of the game? I could go on forever about this game. Ask away, chances are after 20+ years of playing this game that I'll have answers.
