The problem with the ECW Championship is they're simply aren't enough viable contenders at the moment. As much as I love seeing CM Punk as ECW Champion, I do realize that the lack of quality opponents somewhat devalues his title reign.
Part of that - lack of quality talent in ECW. I mean, other than John Morrison and Elijah Burke, is there really another viable contender for Punk's title?
Big Daddy V - Bidding his time in ECW until his eventual call to feud with Undertaker on Smackdown, the former Viscera will likely continue to wreak havoc on ECW, but I don't see him winning the belt or even getting to a PPV match vs Punk.
Kevin Thorn - I'm starting to like this guy as I think he's improved leaps and bounds since the days of Mordecai. I found his recent series with Stevie Richards to be pretty entertaining, and I cannot understand why you would push Tommy Dreamer (who you've buried for nearly a year) over Thorn in a 3 way match with Elijah Burke. I may be in the minority, but I think Thorn/Punk at No Mercy, would have been a much more intriguing match than Burke/Punk Pt.4,268. I think Vince probably has Thorn earmarked for an eventual move to SD as well, so why not make him a legit ECW Title threat?
Tommy Dreamer - It was kinda sad to see Dreamer wearing that bandanna to hide his bald spot. Reminds us all how much time has passed since Dreamer was last a viable ECW Title contender. I've never been the biggest fan of this guy, but after watching him basically get buried by other top guys on ECW for nearly a year, how are we supposed to believe he's suddenly going to beat CM Punk? It seems as if that rumored "Rocky"-type angle that was once pegged for Ric Flair is now going to Dreamer, the aging ECW icon looking for one last run at the belt. Sorry, but I don't buy that.
I know ECW is supposed to be somewhat of a breeding ground for younger talent instead of a legit equal to RAW and SD (I mean, has it ever been?). Well, where is the talent?
I'd love to see WWE creative shuffle some guys around the board and elevate the talent level in ECW in 2007/2008:
Gregory Helms - Although currently sidelined by injury, what better place to give Helms a sustained push than ECW? I think Helms is still young enough to make an impression and I think he could have a nice run as a heel counterpart to Punk.
Shelton Benjamin - I've always felt this guy needed to be paired with a guy that could really talk - and maybe Elijah Burke is that guy for him. We all know how talented Benjamin is - but he hasn't been able to rise above mid-carder status on RAW or SD. In ECW, pairing him with Burke as they both chase CM Punk for the belt could finally bring out the best in this guy. It could be the spot to finally elevate him to main event status.
Santino Marella - Before they bury him completely as a new version of Nick Dinsmore, why not send a vengeful Marella to ECW to work a stiff, MMA style gimmick? We know the guy can be a funny heel on the mic, why not give him the chance to do more? While some may not see him as an ECW Champion, he could definitely elevate the talent level and do much more than he's doing now.
SuperCrazy - An ECW original, he proved during a short RAW push in 2006 that the legendary luchador can still go. He would be much more fun to watch than The Miz or Balls Mahoney. I think he could help the younger talent improve by his example alone, and like Marella, while maybe not a future ECW Champion - he would improve the qualiy of the show.
There are also signed talent like Derek Neikirk, Colt Cabana and Sinn that could all make ECW more enjoyable, more watchable and help the young talent learn to perform in front of crowds, and on television, before they're moved to either RAW or SD.
While I would love to see WWE pursue guys like Bryan Danielson, Chris Sabin, Mistico, Claudio Castagnoli, Chris Hero and especially Samoa Joe (adding all these guys would make ECW the fan boy show of choice) - I think there is enough currently under contract to make ECW a better show and elevate the quality of the ECW Championship.
The belt and CM Punk as champion will only be elevated when the talent around him is elevated as well.
