As it turns out, he was.Yeah, to me, he always seemed like he felt he was above TUF just because he was an IFL champion.
I mean, only Schaub gave him a decent fight, and that was after months of training with top level trainers.

Eh, Kimbo kicked Nelson's ass on the feet
I forgot about this fight. But Nelson did still win, so my point still remains the same.and I thought Wren beat Nelson in the first round of their fight, if I remember correctly.
But he did though. So, while Nelson was definitely the most well-rounded fighter in the house, he wasn't this superior being who could destroy anyone there.
Now this is just poor jmt, Kimbo barely even touched Nelson on the feet, and once Nelson got a hold of him, it was all over. Kimbo got a couple of punches that glanced Nelson, but never hit him flush, and Nelson dominated him on the ground. He was clearly a superior fighter to Kimbo.

So then Royce Gracie wasn't clearly the superior fighter in the first couple of UFCs because he kept taking the fight to the ground?Yes, he was the superior fighter... on the ground. But standing-up Roy wanted no part of Kimbo. If he did than he would have stood and fought with him like he did Wren, rather than taking it to the ground.
They thought there should have been a third round, not that Wren won.Hardly anyone agreed with the decision though.
In the eyes of the judges, it went unanimously to Nelson.Well, he beat them, didn't destroy them, and like I said... the fight with Wren could have gone either way.
Absolutely matchups matter...but Nelson was the best fighter. However, as I said earlier... I can't take nothing away from Nelson. I just don't think he was THAT much better than everyone else in the house. Who knows what would have happened if Roy faced Marcus Jones or Jon Madsen or Mitrione or Scott Junk or Demico Rogers, etc. etc. etc. Match-ups determine everything in these competitions, and that's been proven time and time again throughout the history of the show.
