The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past - A Walkthrough with Dagger

Item Spotlight: Bow & Arrows

10665088_10100250357149616_7278017488239548502_n.jpg

This is one of the most useful and most powerful items in the game. The Arrows are more powerful than your sword and some enemies can only be defeated by them. There is also an upgrade late in the game.

Item Spotlight: Fairies

10437616_10100250357967976_5650386687023672366_n.jpg

Having a Fairy in a bottle can be a lifesaver. If you die but you have a fairy in a bottle, you will get some hearts back but you then lose the fairy. I prefer the blue potion, but some may want this too just in case.

You should now be inside the room past the spider door on the north wall of the room where the big chest was. This room is very dangerous. Light a torch at the far left using your lantern, now light the one at the far right. There are a bunch of Serpents and two Eyegores ahead. Want to face all of them in the dark? No, I didn't think so. Shoot the Eyegores in the eye with your Arrows if you can, or use your sword. One of them has a key that you need to unlock the door at the upper left corner. Go through the upper right first though. There's a ton of rupees in there!

10649608_10100250358746416_1207490505019401196_n.jpg

Go upstairs. Step on the switch under the jar in the lower left corner of the square of jars, go through the door to the left. More Eyegores.... lovely.... Defeat them and step on the switch at the bottom of the room. The other switches are fake. The next room has bowling balls coming from a ton of holes all over the room, avoid them as best you can and step on the switch toward the upper left to open the door. Just when you think it couldn't get any worse, in the next room you meet my least favorite enemy in the entire game, the Red Eyegore. He is immune to everything but Arrows and they only hurt him when his eye is open. Defeat the red Eyegores and the Skeletons then move on to the next room. Defeat the Red Eyegores in here THEN get the items under the jars (you'll have more Arrows that way) and then go through the next door, prepare for a boss battle. See the Armos Knights spotlight for more information on them.

Enemy Spotlight: Red Eyegore

Without a shadow of a doubt, my absolute least favorite monster in the whole game. I detest these. They are just like the regular Eyegore only worse. The only thing that will damage him is the Arrows, and you can only hurt him by shooting an arrow into his eye when it is open. It takes two Arrows to defeat one of these. They are way too dangerous to be found as early into the game as they are. I'd have kept them out of the game up until the 4th or 5th Dark World temple.

These guys are quite tough for a boss this early in the game. They will hop around in a circle, then line up, then form the circle again. You can use your Sword, Bombs, Boomerang, or Arrows. I recommend the Arrows as they will do the most damage, if you run out then go with the sword. Use red the or blue potion if you run low on hearts. If you lose a few times against these guys, don't feel bad. This is a really hard boss considering it's only the 2nd one. When there is only one left he gets VERY angry. He turns red and makes huge leaps across the room to chase you. This last portion of the fight can be easier if you time your attacks right, but it is more dangerous due to how far he jumps. Be careful when this part of the fight starts.

Item Spotlight: Heart Container

10702084_10100250362913066_7069670870808733362_n.jpg

Unlike the heart pieces which take 4 to give you a new heart, these instantly give you a new heart. After most boss fights in the game, you get one of these right afterwards.

Item Spotlight: Pendant Of Courage

10698493_10100250363531826_8895639423158073074_n.jpg

This is the first of the three Pendants you need in order to get The Master Sword.

Now that you have completed the Eastern Palace you'll need to return to the elder and show him the Pendant of Courage. He'll give you the Pegasus Boots. The spotlight on those is where I'll pick up next time, then there's a bunch of optional items and a couple of secrets to mention before we head to the Desert Palace to seek the 2nd Pendant! I hope you have been saving up rupees, one of the items you're about to get is rather expensive.

Item Spotlight: Pegasus Boots

When you hold down A after getting these, you can run! Running into trees or bookshelves can knock apples down for you to restore your health but it also might anger bees living in the tree.

NPC Spotlight: Elder Sahasrahla

1146745_10100251242225916_3975167671406771116_n.jpg

The elder of Kakariko Village. He is in a small temple by the Eastern Palace. After getting the Pendant Of Courage, return to Sahasrahla again and he gives you The Pegasus Boots. You can communicate with him through telepathy tiles in temples.

Item Spotlight: Bee

1970359_10100251261282726_1170703190730841342_n.jpg

If you run into a tree and bees begin attacking you from the tree, use the Bug Catching Net to catch one! You can let him out of the bottle and he will attack some of the enemies if there are any nearby. I prefer using the bottles to store potions or fairies instead and really never store bees in the bottles, but this can be a fun alternative sometimes. The Good Bee completely outclasses the regular Bees though. More on him in a moment.... He gets his own spotlight.

There are a couple of heart pieces to collect, and we can also get the Ice Rod as well as the Good Bee now. Let's get the heart pieces first. The closest one is by the Sanctuary. From Sahasrahla go south the way you came when you were trying to get to the Eastern Palace originally. Go left and then north until you see a bridge on your left. Take that and follow the path to the graveyard. Keep going left. Now you're at the Sanctuary. Go left and then go up onto the cliff and return to the previous screen from up there. You should be here:

1620661_10100251273622996_7082070754001350487_n.jpg

Now if you see the cluster of 5.... whatever those things are.... to the north of Link and to the left of the three.... Charge into those using the Pegasus Boots to run. I never did know what the heck those are. I don't know if they are rocks or something else. Anyway. This reveals a stairway to a cave with a chest in it, your next heart piece is in that chest.

10703721_10100251275164906_3221652596018830793_n.jpg

There is another heart piece to be found at the dam as well as a cool secret. That is where we'll go next. Go to Link's House. You should know how to get there from the Sanctuary by now. When you get there, go south. You're now in an area with very tall grass. Hares jump up from random places. If you use your sword to cut the grass under where a hare was he will give you an item and call you a thief for some reason.

10400766_10100251279601016_4327834622841710438_n.jpg

Go south in the first screen with the tall grass. Then go left on the next one to find the dam, enter it. Inside the dam is a chest. You can open it by moving the block on the left and right up, then the block in the middle to the left or right. The chest has bombs. Go back outside and go in again to reset the blocks. Push the middle one up to the chest then push the left one to the left or the right one to the right. Go through the door. Use Magic Powder on the Fire Fairy inside. Pull the switch on the left to make fireworks go off in celebration of how awesome you are. Nah, not really. It just makes bombs fall into the room, dodge those and then pull the switch on the right like you were supposed to in the first place. This opens the dam. Now when you go outside you'll find.... Fish! And a heart piece.

1907440_10100251285613966_8085706512310122197_n.jpg

Alright, if you're up for a challenge here is a cool secret. Take one of the fish and grab it using the A button. You will be holding it and cannot use your sword or run. What you're going to do is take this fish to the merchant in Kakariko Village who sold you one of your bottles. Avoid enemies as best you can. If you press A or B it will make you throw the fish. If an enemy attacks you, you drop the fish. If either of these happen, make sure you grab the fish before you leave the screen. Leaving the screen without the fish makes you lose the fish. If you accidentally lose the fish you have to go back to the dam and start over. When you make it to Kakariko Village and the merchant....

10368235_10100251295908336_6391568269874217134_n.jpg

He "buys" the fish from you buy throwing a bunch of items out at you.

1621921_10100251295913326_2028398122534600232_n.jpg

While you're here, go to the library. Use the Pegasus Boots inside to run into the shelf that has a green book on top of it. The book falls down and you can take it, it's The Book Of Mudora! You'll need that to get inside the Desert Palace.

Item Spotlight: Book Of Mudora

10570417_10100251363088706_6456746315746755633_n.jpg

This book allows you to read the ancient Hyrulian language found in some locations. Its most important use is gaining entry into the Desert Palace.

Now we will get the Ice Rod! From the dam go to the right and keep going right. You might notice a cracked wall along the way to the north. Use a Bomb to open that.

1382784_10100251302799526_7224794205534952996_n.jpg

Inside the cave are some Moldorms. Use your arrows or sword to defeat them. The ones on the left and right parts of the room seem unreachable but you can walk over to those areas of the room by walking as close to the wall as possible. Or shoot them with arrows, that's safer. The door opens when they are defeated and inside is a thief who gives you a TON of rupees! You should now have enough to get the Zora Flippers, which is coming up soon. Open the chests too for bombs, arrows, and more rupees. Exit the cave.

10712944_10100251302804516_723727674500742597_n.jpg

Keep going right once you are back outside. You might see some Zoras looking up out at you from the water, they shoot fireballs. Avoid these as best you can. You'll eventually see one of the game's weirder monsters, the Big Octo. He shortly explodes into a few Mini Octos who then vanish after a bit. This is the only screen he shows up on.

Enemy Spotlight: Big Octo

10620647_10100251305419276_305788138975571921_n.jpg

This is one of the strangest enemies in the game. He only shows up on one screen, one the way to the Ice Rod. Soon after you get there he explodes into a group of Mini Octos, and they shortly afterwards vanish if you do not defeat them. Very weird.

From where the Big Octo was, go north and then to the right. You'll see a cave and a crack in the wall. Use a bomb on the cracked wall and go inside. You'll find a frozen cavern and a chest which has the Ice Rod in it!

10341838_10100251308058986_6555646025029101534_n.jpg

Go back outside and go in through the cave entrance. Use a bomb on the cracked wall and go inside the next room. You'll find a couple of fairies and a fairy statue. Use the Pegasus Boots to run into the statue.... a Bee with light following it will show up. This is The Good Bee. Use the Bug Catching Net to catch him!

1509730_10100251381097616_2963810086984463679_n.jpg

Item Spotlight: Good Bee

10653371_10100251311377336_4985744100778281426_n.jpg

Unlike the regular bees, he lasts longer if you unleash him to attack enemies. He can also be sold to the merchant in Kakariko Village but wait until after you have used the Ocarina to release the duck from the Weathervane to try to sell the Good Bee to the merchant, otherwise the Good Bee just hangs around by the Weathervane for a bit before flying away offscreen. Again, I don't really use the bottles much for storing bees or The Good Bee. I'll take any of the three potions or even fairies instead any day. The Good Bee does end up being helpful against a boss in the Dark World, this is the only boss in the game that the bees can attack. More on that when we encounter that boss though.

Item Spotlight: Ice Rod

10665956_10100251308053996_5001959007754447398_n.jpg

This can freeze some enemies, but it uses up some of your magic meter. I like this item and honestly wish it was needed more, unlike the Fire Rod which is required for far too many frustrating puzzles. I'd have made a few puzzles for this item's use. Outside of one boss fight later on that this is extremely useful on, it doesn't see much use unless you want to freeze an enemy. More on the boss it's needed for when we get there though, that's not until late in the game.

Now it's time to go to the desert! Make your way back to the dam and go to the left. You'll find a thief next to a sign. If you throw the sign he follows you until you leave the screen. He becomes important later in the game, for now there's not much else relevant to do here. Continue to the left into the desert itself. Make your way north but to the upper right corner of the desert. You'll find a cave. I bet you'd like another heart piece. Well, there's one in here. Inside is a guy who looks a lot like Sahasrahla. Use a bomb on the cracked wall to the south of him, and there's your next heart piece.

10397985_10100251369326206_8724917128408904258_n.jpg

Go to the left of this cave and you'll reach the Desert Palace.

Enemy Spotlight: Geldman

1506661_10100251367929006_2778786486408218973_n.jpg

They attack you by moving toward you toward you in the sand around the Desert Palace, usually diagonally. Not harmless, but not a major threat either.

Enemy Spotlight: Vulture

10606042_10100251367464936_1065408353312846912_n.jpg

Very annoying. They are difficult to hit because they fly circles around you. I usually just ignore them completely.

You'll be at a platform with three green statues and what looks like a giant book in the middle. You need The Book Of Mudora to read the text there. Use the Book and Link will see he has to wish for the path to open. You'll hear a really weird sound and then the statues rotate so that you can get into the temple.

Without the book, all you see is this:

10665279_10100251372000846_129801230936718941_n.jpg

With the book, you can read it:

1622201_10100251372005836_1561015877369025168_n.jpg

Now you can go inside.

10646695_10100251372759326_2715911290303385738_n.jpg

Monsters, puzzles, new items, a boss battle, a heart piece, and more when we go through the Desert Palace. We'll pick up there next time.
