The Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past - A Walkthrough with Dagger

Item Spotlight: Heart Pieces

10665155_10100248957005516_7730564649418656185_n.jpg

These are very important! The more you can find of these, the better. If you find 4 of them, it earns you another Heart Container. Several are hidden throughout both worlds and if you find them all, you'll max out your Heart Containers completely. I'll make it a point to show where each one is so that you can find any you may have missed. Some are easier to find than others. There are also full Heart Containers that will be found during the game, usually after a boss battle.

South of the fortune teller is Kakariko Village. You are safe from monsters here, other than in a couple of spots where townspeople might yell for soldiers for help. Apparently you have been accused of kidnapping Zelda. The sign by the northmost house confirms this, and that is why a couple of the NPC's in town yell for soldiers. I'll point out which ones those are. Let's explore town. First things first, there are heart pieces to be found, two bottles, and you need Bombs. Go to the upper left corner of the town. You'll find a cave and a secret entrance next to that. Get on the cliff above the secret entrance and jump down into it, you have to be exactly north of it. In here you find some chests. Do not jump down into the water yet. The first chest just east of where you fell has Bombs. The other chests have rupees. Use a bomb to open the cracked wall to the left of the rupee chests. The cracked spot is darker than the rest of the wall. Inside are some jars and a chest with a heart piece!

1891141_10100248976895656_5668697125315664507_n.jpg

Jump down into the water and you will be able to exit. You're now back in town at the cave you saw earlier.

Item Spotlight: Bombs

1012752_10100248974635186_8866393706302794451_n.jpg

The Bombs are useful but dangerous. They can be used to create holes in cracked walls in temples or other locations. Their explosions can also damage enemies. A certain boss has a mask that the Bombs can help destroy, but I'll get more into that when you encounter him. There is also a Super Bomb that you find late in the game, one cracked wall must be blown up by those and the regular Bomb will not work on it. Be careful with the bombs because the explosions damage you too, and you can run out of Bombs if you use too many. Only use them when you need to. If you run out you can buy Bombs at some shops or find them among the randomly generated items under jars/rocks/foliage, or enemies might drop them when defeated.

Now go to the building with the green roof to the left of the north-most house. It used to be the hideout of a gang of thieves who had a leader named Blind who hated the light. This ends up being important later on in the game. Go downstairs. Here you find a puzzle where you can get some chests. Start by moving the block north of the rightmost chest downward. Then move the block that was next to that one to the left. This allows you to get the rupees in the chest third from the left. Now move the block on the right of the top row downward, the block that was right next to it move it to the left. Move down past the chest and move the block in front of you down. Now go move the block two spaces to your left, to the south. Move the block next to it to the right. You can now open the other three chests. All of them contain rupees. Use a bomb on the cracked wall to the right of the stairs. It will look a little different than the rest of the wall. Inside you find a bunch of jars and a chest that has a heart piece!

10670223_10100248977933576_5547443785063035176_n.jpg

The house south of the cave where the bomb and heart piece were has a girl in blue pacing back and forth in front of the door. She is one of the two NPC's who yell for soldiers, so try to avoid her. If either of these women yell for guards they run into their houses and lock them. Defeat the guard that shows up and then the game returns to normal. Try to go inside her house without her seeing you. Inside there is a Cucco under a jar. If you return here after getting the Magic Powder you can use it on that Cucco to turn it into a girl who looks just like the girl in blue outside. She tells you to not pick on the Cuccos. Go to the right to find a merchant. He will sell you a Bottle! Be sure to buy it, you want to get all 4 of the Bottles in the game. It costs 100 rupees but it is worth it. There are a couple of other cool secrets involving him that I will mention later on, after The Eastern Palace.

10509549_10100248979565306_4674405171394561349_n.jpg

To the far right in the top row of houses you find the other NPC that yells for guards. She is wearing yellow and just like the other girl, this one also paces back and forth in front of her house. Go inside her house without her seeing you. Inside at the north wall there is a painting of a guy who looks kind of like Mario on the wall. Go up to the painting and try to pull it off the wall, hold down A and press down on the direction buttons. This is the same method of button pressing you used to pull that switch in Hyrule Castle's Basement right before the Sanctuary. You cannot pull the painting off the wall but rupees come out of the wall.

Exit that house and go south. The house with tons of foliage in front of it has a guy inside who tells you about the Zoras and a treasure they have. Go to the large building south of this. Enter through the back entrance of the large building. Inside is a chest with your second of four Bottles!

10622955_10100248986661086_5607176874698349012_n.jpg

Now go back out the way you came. You might find a man wearing all red. He will run away and you cannot keep up with him without the Pegasus Boots. The lady sweeping the yard by him can be turned into a fairy if you have the Magic Powder. Inside her house are more Cuccos and a cracked wall to the right. Use a bomb on that wall to get into a hidden room with a treasure chest containing Arrows. Without the Bow you cannot use them yet though. South of the running man and the sweeping lady you will find a blue haired boy. Talk to him and he will mark on your map where the elder you needed to speak to is. The house next to him is a shop. Buy more bombs if you ran out. You can buy a Life Medicine potion here also but a better alternative is available, which I will cover when we get there. Now go to the house to the right of where the running man was. The guy inside is sick but he gives you a Bug Catching Net!

Item Spotlight: Bottle

10696175_10100248980498436_3852659805010532127_n.jpg

Empty bottles do nothing, but the bottles can be very useful for storing items to use later on. Potions, fairies, and bees can all be stored in a bottle. You can get 3 early in the game, while the 4th is not available until you are more than halfway through.

Item Spotlight: Bug Catching Net

10354602_10100248984500416_3038596982128608188_n.jpg

This allows you to catch bees or fairies and put them into a bottle. It also has a really cool other secret use. You can use it during the fight with Aghanim to make his magic projectiles turn back and hit him! Here's some trivia for you. I literally never use The Master Sword in that fight. Ever. Why use The Master Sword to change the direction of his magic projectiles when you can instead brag about killing the evil wizard using nothing but a harmless Bug Catching Net in the process?

To the east from the lower right corner of town is a blacksmith. He will be important later. Go south instead. To your left is a library. The Book Of Mudora is on the top of a shelf, you will have to return here later with the Pegasus Boots to knock it off the shelf. Go further south. To the right is a house where you can play a chest opening game. Not really worth it or relevant. Go to the house on the left. The guy inside is arguing with his brother so he sealed the door on the other side of the room shut. Open it up using a Bomb. Go into the younger brother's room. Outside is a minigame. The girl in red tells you that you will get a prize if you complete it fast enough. The prize ends up being a Heart Piece! Here is how to quickly get through the maze: Go a few spaces north past the girl in red cutting through the foliage with your sword. Go left cutting through more foliage and north, go left to the sign, jump through the fence by pressing down on the directional buttons where the two dots by the fence are, and go over to the blue haired man to complete the minigame.

10424308_10100248995513346_8408034405426565644_n.jpg

You should now have gotten four heart pieces, which means you have gained a 5th Heart Container! This will make the upcoming temple easier. The last thing I usually do before going to see the elder is to get the Magic Powder, so that is what we'll do next. It is a bit out of the way, but it's worth it. Head to the east and exit Kakariko Village to be back on the overworld. Follow the path and you will see a bunch of foliage in the shape of a sword. Cut through it to get to the screen to the north where you will see something interesting. A boy is playing an ocarina for some rabbits and birds. They run away and the boy vanishes if you approach them. Go back the way you came and follow the path to the east and north since the southern path is blocked by a big rock you cannot lift yet. Keep going to the right past your house and head north across the bridge. Keep going north until you get to a screen where there is another bridge to your left. Cut through the foliage behind the tree and go to the next screen. Follow the path to the right to find the Magic Shop! Give the Mushroom to the witch outside. She says to come back later for something. If you exit the screen and return to this screen again, it will already be ready. Inside next to the shopkeeper you will see the Magic Powder! I would recommend filling at least one one of your two bottles with the Cure All Medicine (the blue potion). There are free alternatives to both the red or green potions, plus the blue potion offers the same results of both the red and green potion simultaneously.

Enemy Spotlight: BuzzBlob

10612768_10100248963512476_4027166057489721902_n.jpg

These guys cannot be damaged by your first sword. It is better to attack them by throwing objects at them, or avoiding them completely. You get electrocuted if you attack them with your sword but you can stun them with your Boomerang. When stunned you can safely attack them with your sword. After you get the Magic Powder and use it on one of these, it turns into a Potatohead. Potatoheads also electrocute you but they look funny.

Item Spotlight: Magic Powder

10417448_10100249052079986_3671923735057353480_n.jpg

The Magic Powder can be used for a variety of odd things. If you use it on a Fire Fairy or a Rabbit Beam they turn into regular fairies which can restore your hearts. BuzzBlobs turn into Potatoheads if it is used on them. If you use it in the cave under the blacksmiths' house in Kakariko Village it awakens an NPC Bat who halves your magic power usage (doubling your magic meter). Several enemies turn into slimes if you use this on them. It will also destroy foliage if used on them.

Item Spotlight: Life Medicine

10641235_10100249053696746_5936378989470985390_n.jpg

This is the red potion. It restores all of your heart containers when you use it. After one use the bottle will be empty again, but you can purchase more if you return to the Magic Shop or you can also purchase some at various stores in the game. It costs a lot of rupees to keep filling it though when there are better alternatives such as fairy fountains which offer free healing, or the blue potion which provides both of the results of the red and green potions at the same time. While this item IS highly useful, you're better off getting the blue potion instead so that you can refill your hearts and magic meter at the same time. You only have to pay a little more to get the blue potion, it's up to you but I recommend the blue potion over the red.

Item Spotlight: Magic Medicine

10696357_10100249053087966_306655304136730972_n.jpg

This is the green potion. It fills up your magic meter when you use it. After one use the bottle will be empty again, but you can purchase more by returning to the Magic Shop. A completely free and much better alternative is to throw an empty bottle into one of the fairy fountains where you can throw items in, the fairy will fill the bottle with Magic Medicine for you. Or you could just get the blue potion instead as it provides the results of both the red and green potions. I personally prefer the blue potion. It is far superior to the green potion in that you can restore your hearts at the same time as restoring your magic. Both health and magic are important, but why restore one when you can fully restore both?

Item Spotlight: Cure All Medicine

10580020_10100249053082976_1751635464097230249_n.jpg

This is the blue potion. You should ALWAYS have at least one bottle filled with this. When used it will restore all your hearts AND all of your magic meter. It is empty after one use, but you can get more by returning to the Magic Shop. It is absolutely worth it, trust me. This is one of the best (if not THE best) items in the whole game. If you run into a situation where the monsters are overwhelming you or you are running out of magic in your magic meter to use an item to solve an annoying puzzle, this item is a lifesaver in either scenario. I can't even begin on how helpful it is in boss fights too. Seriously, ALWAYS have bottles of this potion and make it a point to go back to fill bottles up with more in between temples.

Now it's time to go talk to the elder. Make your way back in the direction you came. Once you get to the bridge on the screen after Link's house, go east. There is a fairy fountain in the cave to your right if you need to restore your hearts. Now go up one screen and keep going north past the strange looking arches and statues. Jump down to the little building and go inside. Inside is Sahasrahla, the elder and a descendant of the seven wise men. He tells you about the pendants you need in order to get the Master Sword. He then shows you where on the map the first one is located, The Eastern Palace. Guess where you're headed next, then? Use a Bomb to open the cracked wall in the back to open chests containing bombs and rupees.

We'll pick up there next time with some enemy spotlights and the Eastern Palace itself.

Enemy Spotlight: Armos

10626840_10100250220164136_4684800065712668959_n.jpg

These guys stand still until you approach one too closely. They then begin hopping around and follow you. They take many hits to defeat and are a little annoying but nothing to be too worried about.

Enemy Spotlight: Octoroc

10649964_10100250226072296_1416984279864814814_n.jpg

Mostly harmless. They run around and shoot projectiles in one of four directions. If one is headed your way simply stand still without swinging your sword or doing anything to dodge his attack. Then attack if he is not shooting projectiles.

Make your way past the Octorocs and Armos. Go north, then east, then south from where the elder was. An Armos will be blocking your way. Defeat him then keep following this path until you find another Armos blocking a stairway, defeat him and go down the stairs. Go up the set of stairs to the right, defeating more Armos and guards on the way. Keep going up the stairs and you'll find yourself at the next temple.... The Eastern Palace!

10350416_10100250225498446_4471189899151423377_n.jpg

This place is much more difficult than the Hyrule Castle Basement was, and has a ridiculously high difficulty for such an early event in the game. There are statues of one eyed monsters called Eyegores in this room as well as throughout the temple. These statues don't serve much of a purpose beyond decoration. If one ends up being important (such as in a certain puzzle in another temple) I'll point it out. The left and right doors lead to nothing. Lift the jar in front of the door in the middle to open it. Inside you will find a different colored tile on the floor, step on that to open the door in this room. Defeat the Serpents in the room. I have no idea why they are called Serpents when they more resemble plants, but whatever. This room has bowling balls rolling down the aisle. Try to stay toward the wall so you can move away in time for a huge one to roll past you. When you have seen the large bowling ball, which shows up after 5 smaller ones have, make your way through the aisle avoiding the smaller bowling balls until you get to the door that leads to the next room. Be careful as to not take too much damage. Before going through that door go left and follow this path onto a platform above the bowling ball aisle. The chest here has rupees. Now go back and go through the north door to the next room.

10001292_10100250235134136_9201633347838566761_n.jpg

In here you'll see some blue Skeletons walking around downstairs by a large chest. You cannot open that until you get the Big Key. Going to the lower right corner and step on the different colored tile to open the door to your right. Defeat the Skeletons and Serpents in here. The upper door leads to a room with a Fire Fairy in it. Use Magic Powder on him or avoid him. There is a switch under the jar in the middle which opens the door to the south. The next room has a chest with this temple's map in it! If you jump down below the chest there are jars under the platform where the chest was. You will not be able to see these, just use the A button to try to grab the jars and then take the items that are there. Go up the steps and through the door to the left. You'll be at the lower door of the room where the Skeletons and Serpents were. Go back left.

Enemy Spotlight: Skeletons

994692_10100250237085226_6981837149405593769_n.jpg

Annoying, but not quite dangerous. They jump to avoid sword attacks. The Boomerang will hit them just fine though. There's also a red type that you'll encounter later which is more powerful.

Enemy Spotlight: Fire Faeries

10257842_10100250238956476_3345320325533828470_n.jpg

These guys are extremely annoying!!!! The only way to defeat them is to use Magic Powder on them which turns them into real fairies. If they attack you in their Fire Fairy form they also steal some magic power from your magic meter.

Make your way to the lower left corner of the room and step on the different colored tile there to open the door to the next room. Defeat the Skeletons in here and go to the next room to your left. In here a bunch of Skeletons will show up. Throw the jars on them if you can, or use the Boomerang to attack them if you run out of jars. When you defeat all the Skeletons the door opens. In the next room is a chest with this temple's Compass in it!

10155586_10100250246626106_5193751788208548702_n.jpg

Item Spotlight: Compass

10458626_10100250248192966_4009063103617612425_n.jpg

This item shows you the location of the temple's boss as well as what floor you're on compared to what floor he is on. It will be represented by a skull on the map that you can see when you press X. See the screenshot below for an example, the location of the boss in the Eastern Palace. If you also have the temple Map it will show you the exact room that the boss is in. Each temple has a compass, so when you get to a new temple you will have to find a new compass.

1488822_10100250247644066_6830198709483254182_n.jpg

Go into the next room to find a tile that you can talk to the elder with. The elder gives you a good hint. The item you get in this temple can do damage to armored enemies. That hint comes in handy further up. You are unable to go south in this room, there's a different way to get to that path. For now, go right. You'll be in the room where the big chest is but on the lower part this time. In here you'll find an extremely dangerous monster, Eyegores. They are asleep until you come near them then they chase you. They can only be damaged when their eye is open! There are some skeletons here too. You cannot open the big chest yet or the door to the north, you need the Big Key for both. Make your way to the right avoiding the Eyegores and go through the door to the right. Go south and up the stairs in the next room.

Now you're in a dark room. There are two Fire Fairies in here who are coming right in your way. Either use Magic Powder on them or hurry over to where the Serpent is, defeat him, and step on the different colored tile to open a door you can leave the room in. In here you'll find some Skeletons. Defeat them if you want to. There is a key under one of the jars, make sure you grab that. Now go back in the room you were just in. The Fire Fairies will still be floating around along the path if you did not deal with them earlier. Make your way to the left and use the key to open the door on the west wall. You're in the bowling ball aisle room on a platform above the aisle. Cross the platform into the next room. In here there are Fire Fairies guarding a jar. Defeat all of the other enemies in here including the Eyegore (throw a jar at him if you can) to make the Fire Fairies leave the jar they guarded. Throw it and step on the switch that was under it to make a chest appear. You must defeat the other monsters. Magic Powder does not work on the Fire Fairies while they guard the jar for some reason. The chest has this temple's Big Key!

10415718_10100250354963996_6940053145970947163_n.jpg

Now you can open the large chest and the locked doors that look like they have spiders on them.

Go north through the door that you needed the Big Key to unlock. You'll be in the room where the tile the elder spoke to you through was. Go back to where the large chest is. Open it up to get the Bow! This is incredibly useful. Some enemies can only be defeated using the Bow, now that you have it you can shoot Arrows. Something really weird happens here too. For some reason, a bunch of yellow skeletons show up and throw their skulls at you. Fend off the skulls and then go north. You can open the spider door now that you have the Big Key but I'd rather jump down into the huge vases first. Inside you find.... Fairies! Catch one with the Big Catching Net and put it into one of your bottles if you'd like. Step on one of the warp tiles to be back in the room where the big chest was. Now go through the spider door to the north.

Enemy Spotlight: Eyegore

10417567_10100250250578186_8324559141781357708_n.jpg

I hate these monsters!!!! These guys are one of the worst monsters in the whole game. They sleep until you get too close to them.... Then they chase you for a while until they fall asleep again. You can shoot arrows at them in their eye to defeat them or use your sword. It takes many sword attacks to defeat them. There is also a red variety which are more dangerous and I hate even more. Eyegores can only be damaged when their eye is open. Avoid them if at all possible.
