Motaste Junk - Stop your brain thinking for 168 seconds

I have no problem with Hodgson at the moment. He had little or no time to rectify the complete mess of a squad that Benitez had left behind while injuries have taken a big toll, not just to Gerrard and Torres but also to Cole, Agger, Johnson and now Carragher. The squad badly needs to be bolstered at the back and some actual wingers rather than midfielders like Maxi and Meireles being deployed out there.
 
Ngog is shit. He's great for the group stages of the Europa League and the Carling Cup, but that's about it. Liverpool, before they have a chance of pressing forward, need another striker, wide players, and a centre half to play with Agger who doesn't just hoof it up the pitch. I'd take Hangeland from Fulham as a relatively cheap stop gap, and as for the wide players, I'd look to play Carragher/Kelly at right back and push Johnson forwards. On the other side, the Premier League has proven that pace is key, so I'd look at Ashley Young, or preferably Albrighton. Houllier still loves Liverpool, hopefully enough to sell us his best players. Up front, I think City's folly at buying one of the most ineffectual strikers I saw play against Fulham last season in Edin Dzeko, means that Adebayor might be available, and would certainly be worth a punt. He played well with Van Persie, who is a similar but shitter version of Torres.

I've decided to stick with Hodgson, because I wanted him in the first place and also because of the totally undeserved shit he gets. However, if he buys Carlton Cole, he will be trying me quite seriously.
 
I agree with almost all of that, Tasty, particularly with regard to pushing Johnson forward.

The only thing I query is your underestimating of Dzeko. I watched him make fools out of Vidic and Ferdinand in the Champions League a year or so ago (although West Brom did the same at the weekend). Liverpool were linked with him with the figure of about £12 million being touted and I think he would have been worth a punt at that price. However, then Man City made their interest known and all of a sudden his price trebled to ridiculous levels. He is nowhere near the same value as Torres but I think that he is the kind of striker that could play along with Torres in the Premiership.

Anyway, Dzeko was kept out of the game by Aaron Hughes, and as soon as I saw City were bidding £30 million, I was thinking "Shevchenko all over again". The German and Dutch leagues can make half-decent strikers look far better than they actually are - Afonso Alves, Pizarro etc. Paying £10 million or so is fair enough, but £30 million is a huge gamble.
 
Dzeko does not look like someone would will score big amounts of goals but I think he could do a lot of damage alongside Tevez in a Toshack/Keegan type way. Although that would force City to actually play a more attacking formation that their usual 4-6-0.

Any decent player has already been identified and, like Dzeko, has had his price ridiculously inflated. Look at Andy Carroll. One good season in the Championship and a good start in the Premier League and he is £20+ million. Look at Pato at AC. Decent scoring record but worth £50+ million? No chance.

As for Liverpool and a new striker, I think there are very slim pickings out there. We were linked with Mario Gomez but he couldn't finish his dinner. A sneaky bid for one of City's myriad strikers might be a decent bet. Would not have minded Santa Cruz a couple of years ago but I think that ship has sailed. We could do worse than have Peter Crouch back.

However, we may have to rely on Hodgson's ability to find unknown talent but if we are not careful we'll end up with Carlton Cole or Jay Bothroyd. And no one might be better than that.
 
Nobody is better than Carlton Cole. Babel has looked ok up front this season, and I'd much rather take a chance on an unknown (someone Scandinavian no doubt), on a player we already have (Babel) or on a proven but unfavoured striker (Adebayor/Crouch) than on someone who took 200 games to score twice in a match. As he's out of contract and in form, I'd bid something offensive for Elmander at Bolton. If he came for £2 million or so, it might not work, or it might be the signing of the season.

Hodgson bought Hangeland from nowhere to Fulham, and managed to turn Zamora from a laughing stock to one of the best strikers in the league last season, but that being said he did buy Andy Johnson for £12 million, so his record is patchy to say the least. Obviously though, it's Comoli that really matters. Comoli is either responsible for the current Spurs team, if you listen to him, or responsible for Benoit Assou-Ekotto and buying Darren Bent instead of Torres and nothing else, if you listen to Harry Redknapp. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle, but its hard to know who we'll buy if we don't know who the manager is or how much we have to spend.
 
If Comolli was so good at finding players, he would still be at Spurs and not have been sacked along with Ramos. The other thing is that it is forgotten how much money Spurs have spent in the last 5-6 years. I read somewhere that Redknapp spent more cash in 3 years than Benitez did in his five years at Liverpool.

Comolli will not be getting that kind of money at Anfield.

I try to catch as much EPL soccer as I can, but haven't seen much lately. Anybody wanna tell me how Theo Walcott has looked?

Unless he learns how to be an out and out striker, I don't think he will ever make it as Arsenal refuse to deploy him as a proper winger. Under Wenger, he will be encouraged to get to the bye line but instead of crossing he will be expected to find a pass.

He is pretty versatile, but his best position is winger. I agree with what you said, but he's a great passer too... They've got to let him do his thing.
 
He runs like lightning and has a good, hard shot but Walcott definitely is not a good passer or crosser... For a winger, his decision making and final ball is abysmal.

He has all the hallmarks of Thierry Henry, but about 25% as good
 
For his position he's a good passer. Well, from what I've seen.

The comparison to Henry would be fair if he lived up to all his hype.

The only way Walcott could be said to be a good passer of the ball is that he passes the ball far too much. As I said that is because of the team he is playing in. A winger should almost never be passing the ball.

The comparison would be fair if Walcott was converted from a winger to a striker, like Henry. Just cannot see it happening at Arsenal
