A simple review is in order, but I thought I'd spice it up by adding some extra comments. Read on & see.. Big Will's "take" on No Mercy 2007.
Opening Segment: Going into the pay-per-view, noone knew who, or how for that matter, the W.W.E. Championship was going to be decided. Low & behold, we start off quickly with Mr. McMahon coming out & cutting a nice (time consuming) promo, that ultimately ends with Randy Orton being AWARDED?! the W.W.E. Championship.. this comes after McMahon says he's giving the fans what they want. (more on this later) So, this after more time consuming moments from Orton, triggers Triple H. to come out, issue a challenge & ultimately push McMahon into it.
W.W.E. Championship: Randy Orton v. Triple H.: Its one thing to 'award' the Championship, its a complete other to start the show with the main Championship on the line. Great, solid, opening match with Triple H. winning the Championship for the 11th time. The whole time this was happening, I honestly sat their watching, KNOWING it wouldn't end like this. This "match" (I say it, because noone knew what, or who, it was going to involve) was the ultimate build around the p.p.v.. no way it could end on the opening segment/match.
6 Man Tag Team Match: Jeff Hardy, Paul London & Brian Kendrick v. Mr. Kennedy, Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch: As far as filler matches go, I was pleasantly happy to see this. And going in, I was remembering how exciting the Monday Night match-up was. The up was that Kennedy was added, the down was that ultimately they could've had Championship matches & it shows how much they think (right now) of the mid-card Championships. So, did this match live up to the excitability & thrill that the first one did? For the most part, I say yes. There were a couple botched moves, & the ending was predictable, but overall.. it was better than most "filler" matches. The only problem I had, was the ending spots. It looks like everything suddenly rushed.. from Jeff Hardy missing his guardrail run, (which while I'm sure he meant to miss, still looked misqued) to Kendrick taking out Murdoch, & almost breaking his own neck.
E.C.W. Championship: C.M. Punk v. Big Daddy V: Going in I hoped this match wouldn't take long, as it had to be built as the worst match-up of the night. Thankfully, it lasted all in about 3 minutes, before Striker got Big V DQed. The funny part is he looked shocked when it happened. Perhaps Striker thinks its still the old E.C.W., in which 98% of their matches were contested under anything goes rules. Nice home-coming for Punk.. (yes, sarcasum) at least they didn't have Morrison come out & bury him further.
W.W.E. Championship: Triple H. v. Umaga: Obviously, I'm not accounting for the backstage segments in my review, but yes, Mr. McMahon still told Triple H. that since he wanted the fans to have what they wanted, & since the Umaga match had been billed, thats what they'll get. (As if McMahon keeps his promises on what matches are billed) Honestly, my review of this match was kinda one-sided. Triple H. won cleanly, which was rumored to happen (without him being Champ) but why not have Umaga getting DQ'ed by beating the crap out of Triple H. instead? It would've made the later events that much more incredible. (I'll explain more later) Overall, this match seemed rushed.. as Triple H. would soon find out he's on "Angle" duty tonight.
Grudge Match: Rey Mysterio v. Finlay: The "WTF" award would clearly have to go here. Not only was this match highly screwed up in time. (meaning, it didn't go long to me) The ending was majorly screwed up. So, Finlay takes what honestly looked like a wicked head bump off the floor, & it could've sold heavily.. IF the camera guy didn't show Finlay looking up, in the "possum" mode.. then having J.B.L. & Mr. "no emotion" Micheal Cole attempt selling that Finlay is still hurt. Now, beyond the messed up injury angle.. what did the ending of this match resolve? That these two will continue their feud?! How was/is this suppose to get the Mysterio v. J.B.L. match that should've been here to begin with? Finlay has talent, but this feud shouldn't be continuing.
Women's Championship: Candice Michelle v. Beth Phoenix: At times, I seriously yelled at the t.v. for the "sneak" pins that Candice kept pulling off. I think she went through the entire book on them in this match. All in all, complete squash by Beth.. which doesn't make sense to me, seeing as how they didn't just do that to begin with during their first match. (Overall, I told you that they'd have her win this time around, as it's similar to the Trish/Victoria angle)
World Heavyweight Championship: Punjabi Prison Match: Batista v. The Great Khali: In my opinion, which will be heavily criticized.. this was the STEAL MATCH OF THE NIGHT! What I mean by that is this.. everyone assumed it was going to be a "write-off" match, that sucked. And while it wasn't what the Main Event was, it was never officially build to be. This match surprised me with Khali's ability to climb, who knew?! Also, Batista's "leap of faith" was pre-predicted, but still nice to see. And the ending was brilliant. I honestly didn't know whether or not Khali was going to win, just because all the tall bastard had to do was drop. He was literally closer to the ground than Batista, even WHEN Batista jumped. Overall, I was impressed.. not enough to wanna see a rematch, but thankful that this gimmick match wasn't a complete nightmare that everyone assumed it'd be.
W.W.E. Championship: Last Man Standing: Triple H. v. Randy Orton: How ironic is it that the match that started the night, to determine the Championship.. would be the match that ended the night, to determine the same Championship? One of the better LMS matches I've seen in recent memory. Both men had great positioning to win it all, & while I went with Orton.. after Triple H. got up from the R.K.O. on the chair, I thought for the brief moment before he collapsed again, that he might win it there. Then again, when he blocked the "Kick of Destiny." (remember, I named that!) Finally, the finish was awesome.. & honestly, the table Monday night may of been meant to break, but tonight, I think it was planned for it not to. Either way, big moves on tables that don't budge.. priceless.
Overall Thoughts: The opening segment where McMahon explains he'll give the fans what they want, followed by tremendous Y.2.J. chants were completely priceless. But the comment I wanted to make was, he still didn't do what the fans apparently wanted.. because from what wwe.com said.. a Championship match between Val Venis v. Snitsky was what they wanted.
The part where I explained Triple H. getting beaten down by Umaga, via him taking a DQ would've been better through my eyes, as it wouldn't bury Umaga via a clean win.. & it'd set up Orton as even more of an opportunist, by taking complete advantage of a man that'd been bloodied, beaten & broken.
Finally, Triple H. is one step closer to Ric Flair in Championships. And Randy Orton is a 3-time Champion. (overall, a lot of people wonder why even give it to Triple H. to begin with.. him going up 11 time Champ, without carrying it for a while, is most likely why.. plus to build Triple H. v. Randy Orton for later on, I'm sure.)
The Matt Hardy/M.V.P. segments are getting worse than the Khali/Batista matches. Enough is enough & its time for a change. (tribute to Owen, may he R.I.P.) The only funny part of this segment was A.) Melina didn't even change the number of pizza's M.V.P. had ate, & ultimately was just there to stand in the ring. And B.) Tazz mentioning that he's from New York got almost more of a (negative) reaction than the Finlay ending. Honestly though.. one of your top technical guys left, in M.V.P.. & the man he's building one hell of a feud with.. & you don't even put them in a match.. again. I wonder if M.V.P. is still hurt from that heart issue. (rumors had him in tag matches, as he wouldn't have to work full matches.. but if thats the case, get the damn U.S. Championship off him already in a "short" match.)
No signs of Undertaker, Kane, Mark Henry, Y.2.J., John Morrison, Shawn Michaels, or Hornswoggle.. weird that they'd have a p.p.v. in October without Kane AND the Undertaker on it. Also, I think the McMahon/Hornswoggle angle is dying down, as it didn't have a part tonight.
Best of the Night: Triple H. v. Randy Orton, Last Man Standing. Great way to end the show, & it almost went a full 3 hours. I've NEVER seen a W.W.E. p.p.v. get any closer.
Worst of the Night: Finlay v. Rey Mysterio. Yeah, Punk/Daddy V is a close tie with this, but at least the E.C.W. match had an understandable, legit, ending. The Finlay ending was messed up big time, & made absolutely no sense. I know it'll come into light as the weeks move on, but I don't care.. this isn't a feud I wanna see carry on.
Overall, I liked the p.p.v. as it (through my eyes) delivered a lot better than that of Unforgiven, Summerslam & the Great American Bash.. combined. It had an almost solid line-up, top to bottom..
