Now that the recap is over, Ive received a lot of emails regarding Glen Gilbertis comments on my recap from two weeks ago. He took issue with my ranking of the Petey Williams match with Black Machismo getting a DUD rating. The match went 10 seconds. How am I supposed to rate it?
As for his comments regarding all the tag teams turning on each other, theres nothing creative about rehashing the same idea over and over. I dont think America is fascinated by Terrell Owens ability to turn on his team. I think theyre fascinated by his ability to catch the ball, when he does it. Gilberti sounds like the producer from Blue Oyster Cult, but instead of needing more cowbell, he wants more Terrell Owens. I think the point of wrestlers turning on each other in particular, and angles as a whole, have been lost over the years. Its done to surprise us when it does occur. Thus, its best executed sporadically. When three teams tease dissensions every week, its simply something that turns off the fans who cant keep track of it all. In wrestling, familiarity breeds contempt (in the case of the Freebirds and Midnight Express) and love (every successful tag team). It takes time for familiarity to develop. Unfortunately, Vince Russo and Mr. Gilberti live in a wrestling world of the now. Theres no such thing as building or letting something grow. If they made a movie together, it would consist of 90 minutes of car crashes without any plot being built.
I dont know Mr. Gilberti. I enjoyed his work in WCW for many years, and I understand hes a solid Texas Hold Em player. I dont pretend to know more about wrestling than anyone else All I offer is my opinion.
For Marty. How dare he.
