Wrestlezone Tournament Discussion

Jerry Lawler's credentials astound me. Here is a guy who never had the best physique, the best look, or really the best anything - but damn he may have been among the most consistent of all time along side the Ric Flairs and Harley Races of the world. Lawler is a true legend of the territorial wrestling system.

The number that really stands out is the 30 time Southern Heavyweight Wrestling Champion with the AWA. That seems ridiculous. 30 times? That doesn't tell me "Wow, he WON that title 30 times!" It tells me "WOW, he LOST that title 30 times." I think that works against him more than for him.

One great thing about him was his ability to build and create a feud. I remember despising him in 1993 against Bret Hart, and the Kiss my Foot match being a classic idea. Lawler created awesome vignettes and, even if you were not sold on him as a wrestler at that stage, he was a classic smart heel. I see a lot of Lawler in Matt Striker.

Just finished looking through all of the seeds and everything looks great so far, the only two wrestlers who I think deserved to be higher are Harley Race and Jerry Lawler. I will be supporting Ric Flair, Triple H, Bret Hart and The Undertaker throughout the tournament and hope one of them wins. When will the voting begin Asparagus?

Finally the King of Old School is here. He should be able to do great in the Home Field advantage of ECW. 51 or so Titles all up. He is Awesome, If you research one name. Make sure it is Steve Corino. No matter what Sly says on this Steve Corino is a Better Wrestler than John Cena and Hulk Hogan. Go look for the promo he cut in front of a Limp Bisket Crowd. He was getting White Heat out of that crowd. His role in Wrestling will be forgotten by this generation of Fans because he never Wrestled for either WCW or WWE at their Heights. He is the last of the Old School Journeyman Wrestlers, of the likes of Bruiser Brody, Lou Thesz and Andre the Giant.

Time to get these things going again.

Roughly how long is it going to take to get this thing started? I ask because I simply can't wait.

I think right now the dark horses are coming into it - guys that have a larger fan base than you'd expect and would score some upsets. The AJ Styles and Christopher Daniels of the singles tournament. That's not really fair though, as they had me backing them. Warrior and Muta, I think they'll do better than expected, but the Big Show's a guy that I don't think will get much of a reaction either way and will sort of just drop out without anyone caring or noticing.

My prediction of biggest upset: AJ Styles will take down another massive legend like last year when he beat Hogan. It was a ladder match, but still, it was a huge upset. Either that or Brian Kendrick will beat The Undertaker...

Probably by the end of this month it will get started. I think your right though, we are getting to the point of the tournament were the upset specialist are going to be showing themselves out. I think from this point on, it's unrealistic that anyone makes the final four, but could take down some guys that could make it that far.

The Big Show went far last year, I wouldn't sleep on the idea of him making it pretty far in this thing. People forget how good the Giant was when he first started out in the business, and yes, it was WWE owned, but he is the only man to win the WWE/WCW and ECW world heavyweight championships.

And if Brian Kendrick beats the Undertaker, I would probably shoot myself.

A few disappointments first off the seedings of Andrea, Harley Race, Jerry Lawler, and even Dusty Rhodes. Of course being a Flair man its hard to say that. Harleys seeding is a true insult. PWI ranked him #8 folks. Come on. How I wish people would go and watch the old school matches.
I'm not sure if I've missed it but where is Arn Anderson. A great tag wrestler and indivual. He is in my opinion the great wrestler to never hold the heavyweight gold. I hope he shows up soon or even better I missed him. Also Tully Blanchard!

Serious Horsemen fan here!

The old axiom is "out of sight, out of mind." Fact is, some of the old school guys get placed in the teens or 20's on a lot of our sheets because its hard to ignore the current greats. The cool thing about that is, tarp, the upsets we might see. There are plenty of old school fans who will make a great case for the Harley Races of the world to upset a Chris Benoit. I am a huge Tully Blanchard guy, and if and when he shows up on this thing I will be in his corner big time. Just make sure you participate when the match ups come out.

And if Brian Kendrick beats the Undertaker, I would probably shoot myself.

Probably in a Casket match. Or a HIAC match. Or a buried alive match. Or a, look, 'Taker's got a lot specialty matches...

On that note, I've got to wonder how big a role match gimmicks are going to have in this thing. I think popularity alone will carry people, but gimmicks could play a part, particularly in close matches. Odds are, they'll play in favour for the more athletic wrestlers, particularly X Divisioners/ Cruiserweights.

So the plan right now is to have all of the top half of the tournament announced by this Saturday, so I gotta bust some ass to get there. So here are the #22 seeds. Honestly, I think I might just start this thing after the Royal Rumble, it's big enough to last until Wrestlemania if milked properly.

You bastard! You misspelled Nigel McGuinness's name! How dare you.

In all seriousness though, I love Nigel. I honestly think he's a great talent and, him being from roundabouts where I come from, I'm very proud. He's probably the closest thing to an English world champion that we're going to encounter between now and, well, maybe forever. I know that technically he's a world champion now, but you know what I mean.

Despite that, I don't think he'll do well, particularly if we have the same people from the WZ awards (forum ones, not "official") voting in this. He'll probably lose to... I don't know, Gillberg. And I'll be pissed off.

EDIT: Wow, both AMW members got the exact same points? That's pretty cool.

Haha, sorry about that. He used to wrestle here in HWA at the Red Barn Flea Market in Batavia, about 5 miles away from my house. One of my high school buddies parents owned the place, so we always got in to watch him for free. It was pretty cool, especially now that he is actually becoming quite famous. That's why you always try to check out local shows, you never, never know what you're going to witness.

I like what I see out of McGuinness, but I tend to think like you Sam, if this becomes a popularity contest, (which it shouldn't), then McGuinness, depending on the TNA/ROH fan boys, has no shot in hell of going out of the first round in this thing. That's why I'm not sure if I want this thing to get too big and decided by a bunch of people that really don't know the business, but that's my opinion anyway.

I was all set to mark out for AMW (two of my favorites right now) but I have to commend Asparagus for posting a photo of Tito Santana with the OLD OLD Intercontinental Title Belt. That's the same belt Don Muraco broke on a steel cage, resulting in the greatest physical belt of all time, the Late
80s - Late 90's Intercontinental Belt.

This 8-some is the scariest yet. I have research McGuinness since so many of you have talked to me about him. Again, AMW has the "up and comer" status. Arn Anderson is an all time great. Kidman could beat a WWE or WCW old timer in certain types of matches. Slaughter is harmless. Shamrock is an animal.

Yes it hit the nail on the head, horsemen fanatic! I am glad we got Arn in and I'm sure Tully is coming. You made some great points and it's good to see there are some more horsemen fans out there!

This tournament is shaping up very nicely and I am looking forward to the heated debates we all are sure to have once some of the matchups begin to come together. I am also considering running a stable tournament similar to this in the future, do you all think that would go over well?

Shane Douglas Is a great wrestler with brillant promo delivring.Nigel McGuinness can go far but I bet some members of the forum aren,t big on him.Well I,ll be supporting Nigel. And I hope a few others can relaise he is a brillant talent.

Finally Colt Cabana and Delirious make their appearances in this thing, unfortunately I don't see them lasting long, since most people here probably aren't all that familiar with them, but damn those have got to be two of the most entertaining guys I've seen step into a ring in a log time, you see them wrestle matches against each other and they're great, they have the action and all the other stuff you look for in a match plus both are able to bring a certain comedic element to the matches, and promos, two guys that I'm sure will most likely get over looked, and eliminated early, which is a shame

I really miss the old school wrestling before you had the owners all in the ring talking, wrestling. Igo back sometimes and watch my wrestlmania dvds from the very first one.Now that was the best. I enjoy now but smackdown is alright but not as good RAW.But I can not complain I watch every show and go to the matches when they come to Rochester. But I do miss the good times.

 Colt Cabana! I really can't wait for him to debut on SmackDown or ECW or something. Him teaming with CM Punk in the WWE would be AWESOME.

Good to see Jimmy Snuka in there finally, he always seems to be one of those older wrestlers that had a great career but never was a huge draw or won any of the major world titles and therefore gets overlooked.

I am not too high on Delirious and think who could go a few rounds based solely on his hardcore fan base. Cabana is another who may be a dark horse for an upset for the same reason as Delirious.

Also Shane Douglas fits into the hardcore fanbase section with these other two but he only got over based on the genius of Heyman and not by his own merits, I hope is gone early because he does not deserve the credit that a lot of people give him.

Onto the #25 seeds, and we"re now cracking the top 100.

How is the legend that is Kenta Kobashi this low in the tournament I will never Know. He is a Legit threat to everyone he is up against Idon't give acrap if he is Hogan that he is up against Kenta is a legit threat to every single person in this tournament. Remember that and look at his matches he could quite possibly out wrestle both Kurt Angle and Tom Billington in one match.
