Wrestlezone Tournament Discussion

Wow, more great talent is coming along and I can't find anything truly wrong with the people on the list so far. Jushin Liger and Rhyno are a bit of a shocker but both have so much talent they are deserving of their spots. I actually think Liger should be a bit higher. Jeff Jarrett is so damn amazing. I don't undertsand all of the shit he gets. And Scott Hall was always great before drugs. SO far it is great and I can't wait for voting to start up.

Jushin Liger has got to be one of the most under rated wrestlers of all time. I mean, to double up with so many "Best Ariel" and "Best Technical" awards for so long. Liger was so entertaining, came up with visually enthralling high spots, created a fantastic match, and somehow managed to sell really well without use of his facial featured. For the longest time I just wanted to see a war between him and Sabu, which really could have only ended in one of their deaths. I'm glad to see him so high up on this list.

I have read the whole thread and one thing suprised me.Lance Storm being near the top.Now I,ll agree he is a great wrestler but I think someone else could have been there like Jushin Thunder Liger(brillant). But the others have been really good and deserve to be there.

Having the cojones to put Benoit in is an awesome move. What happened is a result of drugs, concussions or madness, and it is awful...but was that the Benoit who thrilled us for so many years or just what was left after so many destructive forces took their toll?

Respect the person he was, even while you hate what he did in the end.

I mark out For Chris Benoit like no other. Personally, I won't let the last 72 hours of his life sway my opinion on him. Benoit was the best in ring wrestler I have probably ever seen, and I simply think there are too many unknowns for people to call him a cold blooded killer.

Um ya, so got Smackdown vs. Raw for Christmas and can't put the damn thing down with the CAW's, but I need to update this list and keep it going. So onto the #13 seeds.

To speed up the process, I will be excluding last years stats, unless people really want to see them.

Kennedy? Seriously?

How did Mr. Kennedy get so high up? Ok, granted not everybody knows Bryan Danielson and EVERYBODY knows Mr. Kennedy, but the guy who has blown more chances than anybody in recent memory (with the exception of Sabu) makes it up this high? WOW there is controversy.

Glad to see Lesnar so high up. Had he not walked away, he'd have been in the top 5 of all time. I think he'll do very well in this tournament - I will be very conflicted if he runs into Vader.

Your thinking about Kennedy?Im wondering why on earth that Senshi is a 15th seed!I mean Alex Shelley,Chris Sabin and Homicde or way better than that guy!

I agree with you 100% here, but Low Ki / Senshi gets a big nod from the ROH makrs who recognize him as the first ever ROH Champ. If you notice, early on it was almost all WWE / WCW / ECW (with Sting and Angle being the tweener with TNA) and now we are seeing the ROH guys take up the mid-seeds. Next trend will most likely be the Japanese stars around the 17th level - 22nd level and so on.

To me i htink Cena and Lesnar should have been higher up than where they were but i cant really argue seeing as i did not vote on them rankings.

I think this tournament though is going to take a likttle different shape than the last one especially with the guys outside the top few seeds

Continuing on with the number 16 seeds.

And that will do it for the top 1/4 of the tournament. I will have updated brackets later on, and probably a quick run down of how i feel things are shaping up to this point. Still a lot of high quality wrestlers to go.

i wish i would have found this thread earlier because i enjoyed reading it last year and if you want me to i could do the brackets for the tournament this year.

Can,t belivie the funker and dusty are so low.I mean MVP or Senshi havn,t won a world title.

Go Shelly!Buts wheres Sabin?:(

Shelley has more potential to go further than Sabin. Sabin will be on this. However I am surprised by the fact that Andre is that far down the order. Dusty Rhodes I can understand since most people will not have seen any of his work from the late 70's to the 80's. Good to see the Funker in as well. Ultimo Dragon I need to watch more of his matches at some stage. Though I still can't remember if Steve Corino has been picked yet. If he hasnt then he should be higher by a large margin.

By the way guys - just checking this Tournament out and it seems like a really cool concept. At least, the way you guys do the original rankings and stuff. That being said, sorry if it has been explained and link me if there's a place with the rest of the rules, but I'd like to know how the rest of it works once all the seeds and rankings have been announced.

How are the matches picked (opponents, types of matches, etc.), how do people vote and is that how they win - simply by fan vote? Let me know, because maybe next Tournament, we can have it announced and promoted on the main site. Not sure what Boone would think, but I think it would be a good way to get some more activity in the forums.

Additionally, this next year, I want to start working closer with the admins of the forums to come up with ways to cross promote between the main site and the forums. Tournaments like this are good ways to do it in my opinion and if I promoted this on the main site, you would get even more feedback and participation I believe.

Anyway, let me know how the rest of this thing works!

Chris

I'm guessing you understand the basic principle of the Ranking with it being based on the cumulative point total of the scores based on the rankings that myself and others have given to Conspicuous Asparagus. With the Ranking it goes and works itself up to the list that you are getting now. The matches are then worked out to be a proper tournament Bracket. So the matches are determined by standard tournament structure 1 Vs. 64 with the winner going on to face whoever he comes up against. Somewhere in this section is the original tournament. Or closer would be the tag team one that took place leading up to Summerslam I think. It is a fan vote, Though the way the votes are collected may change due to controversy over the fact that people voted more than once and scewed some of the results greatly. The actual tournament hasn't started yet so promoting on the main site can still work as the ranking will take quite a bit of time since it is 256 man tournament. It is a bit of a popularity contest unless people take into account the factors such as where the ring is based (MSG for WWE, iMPACT! zone for TNA, ECW Arena for ECW) Including the rules for the individual promotions so ECW will be involving chairs and stuff as well as other type of those promotion specific rules. As for the matches until they get up to the third or fourth round they are standard matches then it comes down to specifics that I can't remember properly. But one of the rounds is specialty matches made famous by the promotion (HiaC for WWE, Ultimate X for TNA, Stairway to Hell or Barbed Wire ropes for ECW) So it is probably best to look back at the first tournament a few pages back in this section.

So essentially the first three rounds are non gimmick one on one matches. Basically like Shadow said, the rules of the matches are based around the region they are in. Rounds 4-5 are gimmick matches. Round 4 is completely randomly chosen. We pick 16 gimmick matches, I assign a number to each, put it in a random number generator, and that's it pretty much. Round 5 features 2 speciality matches, which are not used in round 4, regional specific. Rounds 6-8 would take place in "one night" King of the Ring style.

Last years tournaments were done objectively. There was a concrete formula for making it into the tournament. Points were awarded based on individual championship accomplishments. This years tournament is completely subjectively done with a personal top 100 list based on your own credentials.

Anywho, onto an updated look at the top 16 for each region. Clearly I think the WWE Region is shaping up to be an easy road again for HBK. Outside of Cena or Lesnar, I don't think their is a legit threat in here, and I'm a Benoit mark.

The TNA Region Looks to be the toughest. In the top 5 theres enough talent to headline a fed. Also theres some great mid-carders in that section etc.CM Punk,Sabu,Kennedy.

I definitely agree that the TNA region is shaping up to be the toughest so far - Stone Cold and The Rock are the main threats to Kurt Angle's otherwise likely domination, they may very well eliminate him. Oh noes! However, I have to question how many Austin/Rock fans there are these days, besides myself, and so they can still be overcome. People may say Ric Flair is a big threat as well, but I don't see him having the momentum that he did last year. My prediction, looking at who's in it so far: Kurt Angle.

Then again, the ECW region's roster looks very well filled out, particularly the top 4. I'd discount Jericho, if only he weren't a top seed. Foley has a big fan base and Edge is white hot right now, but I think Undertaker will be the one to look out for. He's got fans both old and new, and has been a high carder in the world's premier promotion for-fucking-ever. Prediction for this tough region, obviously, Undertaker.

WCW region, although not as densely packed with massive stars, has big stars spread fairly evenly. Bret Hart is the number one seed and I believe he did well last year, but Triple H is what most people think about when they think of the WWE in the last five years. He's also got his own campaign backing him, so I'll go for him to conquer this region. Hogan could do well, if treated better than last year and up until this point. Guerrero... I don't see much happening there to be honest.

The WWE region: who are we kidding? Shawn Michaels is going to dance his way through it and is such a dead cert he may as well do it three times. People to do well are Christian, Styles and Sting, perhaps Joe. Mark my words, Cena's going out early, chain gang or no chain gang.

So now onto the 17 seeds.
