Video Games Tourney hype thread

You know that if the Djinn runs you can just challenge it again right?

Almost every boss in the game can be walked though by abusing Flash and... Ground? Star Magician and Dullahan can't. Evil bastards.

I'm playing Golden Sun 2 right now, it's awesome, but not as good as the first in my eyes. I like that they opened the game up a great deal... but it's almost TOO opened up for my likings. I'm struggling to figure out where to go right now, though I have an idea.

You're just starting a very slow starting game. Once it kicks into gear, it really kicks. Even the first dungeon which you should be heading to is awesome.

There is a cheap way to win battles once you get into the final lighthouse. I won't tell you though because it spoils the fun of real battles.

Oh I'm WAY passed the first dungeon, I'm just leaving some swamp now where I got the 4th Venus Dijinni. But yeah, the puzzle solving in this game is awesome. I loved the dungeon with the whirlwind enhancement things, even though it was ridiculously long and complex.

It was one that I had to solve a puzzle to get, but it's okay, I restarted and only had to replay about 5-10 minutes of the game. I'm a regular saver, thank fuck.

That's Airs Rock. One of the most difficult times i've had with a video game.

Just for the record; yo did transfer 100% of the Djinn across right? You miss some significant end game content if you don't bring them all across from the original.

Yeah, I did transfer all my djinni and all of my character stats, but I left behind the weapons and coins. I feel like I'll regret that, but the code for it was SO LONG!

Err... you won't regret the absence of weapons. Everything from the previous game is totally outclassed by the time you get it. There are a couple of items you'll regret not having though. I can't remember if you can ever get another cleric's ring which might mean no cursed equipment (nothing optimal is cursed). You also need the orb of force/halt gem at a couple of points, but I think it's only to obtain content that you may have missed during the previous game.

If I remember correctly you do get to keep the equipped items that grant you psyenergy, but I'm not sure of it. Hopefully you do get to keep it, because I've already noticed a place where using force would access a treasure chest. I'm willing to bet there's something badass in that chest.

When you merge the two teams, do you get to use all 8 characters or just pick and choose four? I would imagine 8 would be a little overkill, so 4 seems more likely. If that's the case, which four do you suggest? I'm thinking Isaac, Felix, Mia, and Sheeba, but I'm not sure. Is a fire adept really an important one to have?

I find the general rule is that as the chests get more difficult to obtain the odds of them containing a veil steadily increases.

You get four in your party, but can swap to the other four during battle allowing for some pretty epic summon spamming.

Gah I can't wait to get to Jupiter lighthouse now. I just finish up Lemuria, and my team is decked out after hitting up the lucky medal spring.

And did you mean vial? Because I noticed that too! That's the way it seems in the elemental rocks at the very least. There was one puzzle that I figured out on my first try after just taking the time to study it and not jump to any hasty decisions (my biggest downfall in this game), and then I proudly open the treasure chest to discover a vial, and I don't even use healing items!

All this talk/playing of Golden Sun has gotten me even more excited for the video game tourney. It's fun seeing unlikely partnerships being forged over the shared love of a video game, and I hope I can count on Gelgarin and Fizzy to help push Golden Sun pretty far along in the tournament so it gets at least some of the recognition it deserves.

I'll be supporting it until the end. There is less than a handful of games I would pick over Golden Sun.

Lee,

Apologies for not sending you my list via PM. It totally slipped my mind. If you haven't already accounted for the list I poster in here, may I please send it to you to have it count towards the competition slate?

It's supposedly much worse than the original two and I don't want the game to leave a sour taste on the series for me. I'll stick to the first two and be perfectly content doing so.

From what i've read, the impression I got was that they didn't change it and it sucked.

They changed aspects that really didn't need changing, and left aspects that the series could probably have done without.

Overall though it's simply that it's not a very good game. The puzzles are all easy as shit, the storyline is atrocious, illogical and completely bereft of intrigue, the world is more closed off than previous titles and contained multiple points of no return (a cardinal sin in the RPG world). There is simply nothing redeeming about the game.

Something like that, although a few of them appear to be virgin births on account of having no trace of a mother of any kind. Quite how Garret managed to spawn offspring is a question the game never bothers to deal with. Given that he has apparently been living alone with Isaac (who did enter a woman to create his child - even if she is ignored for most of the game) I prefer not to speculate.

Most of the ones on GS1 (I haven't played through 2 entirely yet, the boat turned me off a bit) were pretty easy; if they weren't chancy they could be beaten in one or two tries. I'd a feeling with Amurica becoming more and more derp, that they'd dumb down the difficulty a good deal though

Golden Sun was really fucking simple too, how did they manage that?

the world is more closed off than previous titles

Well that sounds kind of boring, the best part was being able to go fucking everywhere

and contained multiple points of no return

Game officially sucks.

Don't get me wrong, GS1 and GS2 haven't been challenging to me since I was about thirteen years old. (GS2 optional bosses aside) That being said, the puzzles in places like Air's Rock or Crossbone Island still required some level of actual thought.
The puzzles is Dark Dawn don't even have the elementary complexity of the first two games and serve more as a chore than they do a valued gameplay element.

GS1 was simple, but not without points of interest. For a hand held game it's one of the better examples of world building. GS2 was less good from a story perspective, but it was still functional as a plot; it had a beginning, a middle and an end, and everything that needed to be resolved was so. It's not Shakespeare, but as a device to carry the game forward to plot made sense and was completely non-objectionable (extended conversations atop roofs aside)

Dark Dawn is horrible. The story has no end of plat holes in it. Elements will be brought up and then never mentioned again. For the vast majority of the game your party has no real direction and is just traipsing from point A to point B for no real reason. The conclusion is completely unsatisfying and half the main cast don't appear to have a proper set of parents. It stinks.
