Video Games Tourney hype thread

Interesting. Bloody horrible for my little crusade (most of my nominations sit happily a one point each), but a pretty solid system overall.

My theory is people (especially me) are better off dropping five points on their obscure picks trying to get them included as opposed to trying to get their favorites a stronger draw. Looking forward to this quite a lot. Expect my mood to plummet exponentially once the voting actually starts.

Interesting thing is last time the points were a lot higher due to my other system. The winner was Goldeneye and had over 400 points, Kingdom Hearts made the quarter finals and only had 22 points in total before the tourney and only got in as it was one of my five games I picked that didn't make the original 100.

I think Kingdom Hearts got by Oblivion. Not positive, but that was a shock of the last tourny considering the orgasm's people have over Oblivion.

Dragon Quest VIII over Elite and Halo over System Shock make me very sad.
As does no Dizzy, this will be remedied.

I originally said the 14th for deadline for your game lists but I've brought that forward until the 10th. 3 days to get in a list if you haven't already, I'll be announcing the non mod who'll be helping the tourney in that time (after I tell them of course ;) )

Ooh....I doubt I'm getting this but I think it is a great idea.

My reviews will be postponed until the end of the tourny I think. Can't do one today considering it's Mother's Day.

Even I have a small soft spot for Banjo-Kazooie.

Too easy even by children's game standards, but a charming little distraction none the less.

I'll say this for Mario 64, there is no entry in the genre from before or during it's release that matches it. Nostalgia aside I have seldom run across anything approaching a valid argument as to why Goldeneye is better than Perfect Dark, or better yet Quake.

Quake hit the market an entire year prior to Goldeneye and offered a pretty unambiguously superior game. The multilayer experience was far superior, required more skill, more strategy and unlike Goldeneye was not intrinsically broken so as to be almost unplayable by the talented player.

Single player is arguable, personally I would still give the nod to Quake for the additional depth, but Goldeneye was above average for an FPS as well.

Then there's simply the question of legacy and influence. Quake defined the FPS genre for years to come. Look at the top games now and see how much of what they do can be traced back to the success of quake. In contrast Goldeneye accomplished almost nothing original beyond some phenomenally bad tank sections. It was a flipping movie tie in, and design wise was about as safe at it was possible to get.

Add to that the fact that quake spawned a four game series with additional expansion packs and completely paved the way when it comes to user generated content. There is a reason why Quake modding communities still exist.

I don't even like Quake. At all. But it is a superior game to Goldeneye.

But the thing about Mario games.. You don't need to go "Aw.. I remember when I used play this[ or whatever]." to enjoy the game. Mario 64 is legitimately one of the best games ever..

Better than fucking GoldenEye anyway.

There is very little you will hear me complain about Mario 64 going over. It ticks all of the boxes I look for.

Mario 64 losing to anything is terrible. While I loved Goldeneye (at the time, it's shit now), there's no way in hell Mario 64 should have lost to it.

In fairness, the Mario franchise has pretty much had the entire genre to itself since 64. Every main Mario release has easily surpassed Mario 64, and aside from the Mario games, what else in there?
