The Mosh Pit: The Official Metal Thread

Everyone has some damn good answers. I am no Ghost fan but if our President said they are his top 3 I have to find a way to see them.

GWAR is a band I would like too see for the stage show as well.

Alex, Parkway Drive is Metalcore right?

Parkway is predominantly metalcore although their latest album they've been going more to the groove side of things

1. Opeth. 2 and a bit hours of musical perfection - seriously the quality is better than the albums - mixed with charming comedy from Mikael. Felt like everyone was having the greatest conversation of all time with the guy in between moments of "here's this freaking awesome tune".

2. The Ocean. Mainly because the only guys on stage were the lead guitar and the drums while everyone else was surfing, on the roof or in the crowd. Having around 100 people crammed into a pub for it was radical too. I'd broken my ankle a few hours before the concert and I got to sit on a couch less than 10 metres from the stage which made me so happy. More of a "circumstances made the band better than they would usually be" situation but they'll be either touring like that or in festivals unless they somehow go big so they get a nod.

3. GWAR/Trivium. GWAR gets a mention because obvious reasons, but the whole thing gets old towards the end - perfect kickstart to the business side of a festival day though. Trivium ties since they're a band I've seen three times somehow even without liking a single one of their songs. For some stupid reason they sound really good when you're there and their mosh is pristine so they're always a go to band at a festival for me.

Groove is always good. Groove metal is overall kick ass.

Okay some good answers here.

Now we should do the three bands you could not wait to see live only to completely disappoint.

1. All That Remains. I am a big fan of these guys. I am from Mass so it was really cool to get to see them live in our home state. This was right when Overcome was going to be released. So when they finally got on stage I was amped. Then they played their first two songs which sounded terrible. Phil is the man in my eyes. Vocals are strong with good abilities of sing, scream, growl and whatever else is awesome. The band. The band played way to fast. It was off key off pace just not right. I was not feeling it at all. Such a let down especially since they were the closing act.

2. Whitechapel. Not a fan and it sounded distored which might not be the bands fault but it was bad. Vocals were inaudible to where it sounded like he was deep throating the mic. Just not good.

3. Winds of Plague. Same as above with Whitechapel minus the distortion I am a big fan of Winds of Plague because they remind me of a heavier Bleeding Through. They just were too produced. It did not sound good and was upset they did not play well.

So what are all of your guys 3 let down live bands you have seen?

I can't say I've gone to a gig where the band performing were bad per se but I've seen some that were disappointing

PVRIS- It's not that they weren't good they just weren't memorable to me. I saw them at Leeds fest and somehow my drunk as hell friend remembers them and I (who was sober) could not.

Libertines- Again saw them at Leeds fest. I still don't see the hype about these guys. They sounded worse live (which is saying something) and Carl Barat had to sing most of the songs because Pete Doherty was out of it.

Bastille-Again not memorable and the guy singing seemed almost bored

I know they're not technically metal/heavy but they're the only bands I've seen that I've been disappointed in.

That works Alex. I know it would be tough choice so good answers.

I wonder what Bagpipes and IDR have to say

About that group of bands? I've only ever heard All That Remains. Probably not really up my alley, but if you have a suggestion post something.

All the bands that I was excited to see delivered as expected. Some I've seen in passing, mainly at festivals and such that were memorably awful:

Job for a Cowboy, Emmure (probably the single worst thing I'd ever seen in my life), Butcher Babies (not even tits can make up for that much suck), Asking Alexandria, Bullet for My Valentine, Machine Head wasn't all that great when I saw them but I do like some of their albums.

I hear people comparing Emmure, Attila and bands like that to Limp Bizkit. Maybe in the lyric department but Limp Bizkit can put out interesting sounding music and their musicians are top notch

I honestly don't even know how to describe what Emmure was. They had no discernible lyrics, to me at least. It was like a mirage of fluorescent dude-bro tank tops, flat brimmed hats, pump tennis shoes, repetitive bass tones, and jumping.

I believe this was the festival which Motorhead and SLAYER co-headlined, I joked to my buddy that seeing Emmure may have been the first time Lemmy puked while enjoying some preshow whiskey.

Never liked Emmure like that. However, Despised Icon is coming back with a new album this year!!!!! Wooooo

Been getting into Mastodon. Dig the vocals from everybody and how they're just old school metal

Also I've been really getting into After The Burial. I've listened to them before, specifically their Wolves Within album online but their new stuff is really good

If you're not on the Babymetal bandwagon, I believe their latest album will help you get on. Cute songs like Gimme Chocolate go out the window, and they've focused on the metal variations (instead of the J-pop side). They're shaping up to be one of the biggest bands in metal, whether you like it or not.

Didn't see this posted, neither. Amon Amarth's new album with their first single. Amon Amarth can get very similar and boring if you delve through their discography, but this one is pretty good. Viking metal for anyone not familiar.

And for the metal heads who enjoy something soft, Delain released a new album as well. If you like bands such as Nightwish or Within Temptation, you'll enjoy these guys too. I like to start off with these sorts of bands when introducing people to metal.

Also, as a bonus, here's a song from Kamelot featuring Arch Enemy's new singer. The extended version has some pretty cool keyboard/guitar solo's.

When introducing people to metal, look no further. The first time I heard this song as an impressionable youth, it both scared the piss out of me and gave me a hard on. Instantly changed the way I listened to music forever.

I, I, I
I am standing alone
But I can rock you
I, I, I
On the edge of the blade
But the knife can't cut the hero down

6 years. R.I.P.

I should point out that everyone should go and see Iron Maiden this tour, it confirmed my theory that Bruce still wasn't well when they recorded Book of Souls.

Also went to a NuMetal night at a local Rock bar, so much fun.

So metal and rap. I've heard a few crossovers and hybrids that sound pretty good. I found this song to be a great example.

Ah yes, the 'never-ending build-up' song; it has an amazing build up for a song with no climax, it's forever building up to nothing.

Joey Jordison is doing something and it sounds pretty good to be fair
