The Mosh Pit: The Official Metal Thread

I heard they and August Burns Red were supposed to be pretty good so I was just wondering. It's really hard to find new good metalcore acts.

I could definitely recommend August Burns Red. My first exposure to DWP was at a festival, and there was a ton of buzz, so everyone flocked to their stage, and then everyone was gone by the time it was over. It was very odd to see, but it was deserved. They just weren't very good live.

I figured there's a chance their CDs are better, so I gave them a shot, and it just felt the same. Nothing there that grabbed me.

I first heard about them in between Constellations and Leveler, but then absorbed everything that was out all at once, sort of, so it's all a blur. Those 2 albums wouldn't be a bad place to start, I don't think. Ask me to name songs, or tell you what album they're from, and I'll stare at you like a lost puppy :lmao:

Started listening to Deftones when I watched the Suicide Silence Memorial Gig and they did Engine No 9 with pre recorded vocals from Mitch Lucker

I have the first two Deftones albums and they're ok. Nothing jumps out particurlarly though. I do hear White Pony is their best album so maybe I should get that one.

New Killswitch Engage:

Sounds a lot like old Killswitch Engage. Pop hardcore/rock with a splash of metal. Catchy, though!

On a related note, you both speak blasphemy. Deftones are fucking gods.

Finally picked up the new Megadeth album today, such a revival to that raw, aggressive thrash they built their legacy on. Lyrically and musically leaps and bounds better than the atrocity that was Super Collider. Mustaine commented that he wrote Super Collider looking for radio play and intentionally disregarded that notion for the new album. Thanks Dave.

I completely forgot Dystopia was ever released. Maybe Super Collider put me off, but I always thought TWNAH was by far the worst Megadeth album.

Yeah, I can't argue with you there, Warhorse is really the only song that comes to mind off of TWNAH that wasnt completely forgettable. Moto-psycho might be the worst Megadeth song ever so that helps as well.

I love Bury Tomorrow. I genuinely am surprised I'm more stoked to see them than Parkway Drive next week. And I love Parkway Drive

You shall now go sit in the corner until you purchase White Pony. Don't argue, just go. This is possibly metal treason, but you should be safe as long as you keep quiet.

Was turned onto and subsequently fell head-over-heels for We Hunt Buffalo. If you dig Mastodon, early cKy, etc. you'll love this.

The new Killswitch Engage album is the best I have heard from them in a long time. It has a nice Times of Grace feel to it while being truly unique. Excellent album from an excellent band.

I am still waiting on Westfield Massacre to release their album. If you are a fan of Tommy Vext & Tim Yeung then you just might like these guys.

Alright guys and gals we should do something to keep this thread moving. How about a top 3 something list.

We could start with your favorite top three live bands and explain why.

For me it goes:
1. Rob Zombie - Vocals were good - he just missed some words due to his stage show. There were robots on stage, fire, robots shotting fire, trippy lights, trippy stage monitors and people on stilts. Show was the best I have ever seen. That is why he is number 1.

2. Korn - I am a pretty big Korn fan. When I saw them live it was right before the drummer left the band. Not the original drummer it was another guy who I am to lazy to look up. The reason they are my second favorite live band is they just played songs. They did no talking. It was song after song after song. They gave you your money's worth. They sounded amazing. Every thing was spot on if not better than the album recordings. They were raw, heavy, energetic and powerful. Great show.

3. It's a tie between Slipknot & Chimaira. Slipknots stage shows are impressive in general. Seeing Joey's drum solo in person was a site to see. Him spinning in the air while playing the drums was so damn cool. I have also had the pleasure to see Slipknot with Weinberg behind the kit. He was on point. He played every song to the T. Great show while also sounding good live as well.

Chimaira is tied with third because they are the best live band I have seen behind Korn. I am a huge Chimaira fan who wishes they would all suck it up to put out another album. That is besides the point though. They are heavy, fast, technical, grove all while Hunter sounding great on the mic. They were such an underrated band who put on an amazing show with a lackluster stage show. I know it is due to the set list but they play so good live they deserve to be tied for third.

So what are your guys three favorite live bands?

1. SLAYER- My favorite band period is also my favorite band to see live. While the original lineup with Hanneman and Lombardo is obviously the one diehard fans longed to see, I've seen them twice with Gary Holt (since Jeff's passing) and once with Holt and Paul Bostaph on drums and they didn't lose a beat. Songs sound great, true to the album, high energy, very little theatrics or other bullshit besides lighting and fire. They're number 1 on any list I make pertaining to heavy metal.

2. Motorhead- Everything Louder than Everything Else was one of the band's mottos and they got it fucking honestly. I saw them at a festival and it was louder than anything I'd ever heard, then I saw them indoors a few years later and my ears rang for a week. Other than the volume that emanates from the towering stacks of Marshalls, it's Motorhead, they were born to kick your ass, and that they did.

3. GWAR- Haven't followed them much since Brockie passed away and they got the chick singer, but they put on the most fucked up, most fun stage show. Fun assuming you don't mind being splattered with blood, semen, entrails of public figures or even some Jesus juice while thrashing your ass off. Nothing beats a pit at a GWAR show, except maybe observing a pit at a GWAR show from a dry area in the distance.

1, 2 and 3. Ghost.

Because not only are they one of the tightest group of musicians (in terms of playing the musical as it was recorded), but they put on a phenomenal show designed as a Satanic mass with Papa Emeritus (their singer) beginning the concert in his traditional Satanic Pope garb, complete with a Ghost-branded mitre.

Everyone else pales in comparison.

It's really tough to pick three but I'll give it a go

Black Light Burns- Wes Borland's side project. I travelled all the way on my own to go see them because I thought 'Fuck it they probably won't tour again for ages' It was awesome. They kept joking with the crowd, apparently they'd been so unorganised that they wrote the setlist on paper plates and the bassist had indgestion. Ended up talking to Wes Borland for a bit and got a picture with him.

Parkway Drive Even though I wasn't feeling 100% it was still a great night. The support of Thy Art Is Murder and Bury Tomorrow were awesome and Parkway Drive were awesome. Just awesome showmanship and they were just damn cool

Slipknot They just put on a damn good show. It was like watching theatre. So much cool stuff was going on. Clown was spinning on some contraption hitting stuff, Sid Wilson was hanging from stuff, Mick Thompson and Jim Root were shredding like badasses, Corey Taylor is a master frontman and Jay Weinberg is a more than fitting replacement for Joey Jordison. Me and my friends got so close to the front we could feel the heat from the flames. I ended up leaving covered in other people's sweat.

Honourable mentions to Alter Bridge, Alice In Chains and Slash. They just oozed cool and they were great shows but they just weren't as interactive as the others
