The Mosh Pit: The Official Metal Thread

Well I went to the Coal Chamber gig and it was awesome even though I had to go on my own.

Dope were pretty good, had a Murderdolls vibe/slight hair metal vibe. According to the singer it was the first time they've been to the UK. They also did a cover of Rebel Yell.

Defiled were good. The keyboardist was a bit drunk (he even admitted it) but they were still good. His keyboard was literally held together by duct tape.

Soil were awesome. Played some great stuff and ended on a cover of Black Betty which was awesome.

Coal Chamber were mint. The bassist was wearing a black and white striped dress thing and she looked great. I couldn't tell if the drummer was sweating loads early on or he just doused himself in water but he was soaked. The guitarist was cool, he used a talk box for a few songs and Dez Fafara was just awesome, so commanding.

Ended up getting a Soil CD that I got signed by Ryan McCombs and the guitarist (got pictures with them as well) got a picture with the Coal Chamber guitarist and got the Coal Chamber drummer's stick. Also got a Defiled t-shirt and a Coal Chamber beanie.

Overall it was a great night and totally worth it

Sounds awesome bro. Glad you had a great night while getting some awesome gifts.

Dope is a band that is never with the same members in it at once. Soil is a band in which I enjoy their album with Halo on it. They do seem like a band that'd be awesome live. Glad you've enjoyed the show!

Holy fucking boner.

I'm so jacked for this new record!

Meliora releases late this summer. August 21st.

Ghost are quickly becoming my favorite band. I was just lookin at my Last.fm account and they have more than double the plays of the next band (Opeth) in the last 12 months for me.

But the new track fuckin' kills. I am so jacked for this record.

I love the publicity they're pumping into it too. Check this late-night commercial spot they put out:

To me, part of the allure of this band is the theatrics. They're like a real-life version of Metalocalypse's Dethklok... even though Dethklok are a real band. Kind of.

Haha that's pretty cool. I agree that the gimmick does overshadow the music, sometimes rightfully so.

I'm not a huge follower of them but remember reading that Papa I and Papa II were actually the same person. Any truth to that? What about Papa III?

Yes, almost certainly the same singer — Tobias Forge, formerly of Subvision, Magna Carta Cartel and Repugnant. He was "outed" by Nergal of Behemoth a little bit back. Accidentally, probably.

They do a "ritual" where they pass the torch to the next singer for each record, even though it's the same singer. From Papa I to Papa II, for example, Dave Grohl reportedly donned the outfit as Papa I during an intermission at a show in Sweden and then passed the mic to Papa II — Forge — who came out and finished the set.

Papa III will also be Forge, just probably minus a visual passing of the torch.

Saw Ghost when they supported Alice In Chains last year when I was at uni. Was a pretty sweet live experience. The songs were pretty cool as well.

More detailed shots of the new masks, Papa III:

Pretty cool. I listened to one song reminded me of Slayer with elements of Alice In Chains. My only gripe is their satanic which is not my cup of tea. Overall the song was really good.

It's a gimmick, dude. Do you look at the Undertaker and say "well, he's a great wrestler, but he's the Harbinger of Death, which is not my cup of tea". You understand it's entertainment. Understand this is as well.

Slayer—the "most evil band in the world"—are fronted by a devout Catholic. Tom Araya. He writes songs about destroying Christianity, hating God, loving Satan, killing people, etc. because metal heads dig it. It sells records. Christian rock doesn't, as any album sales will show you. In fact, being labeled a "christian band" in today's rock scene is pretty much a kiss of death.

On being "the most evil band in the world":

"It's all about the cool factor - that's the main point. If something we find is really cool and gory and graphic, we'll go with it."

"Kerry's written some really far-out shit. If it's a good song, I'm not one that's going to go, 'This sucks because it's contrary to my beliefs.' To me it's more like, 'This is really good stuff. You're going to piss people off with this.'

"People have these heavy issues and ask, 'Isn't this a problem for you?' and no. I'm well-rounded, I have a really strong belief system and these are just words and they'll never interfere with what I believe and how I feel.

"People are not in good shape to where they have to question their own belief system because of a book or a story somebody wrote, or a SLAYER song."

Other than possibly lyrical content, I can't say anything about Ghost reminds me of SLAYER. And even that's a bit of a stretch considering SLAYER uses Satanic themes in a variety of ways: as part of war or upheaval (World Painted Blood, Die by the Sword, Evil Has No Boundaries, etc); social/religious commentary (Read Between the Lies, Jesus Saves, Hell Awaits, Behind the Crooked Cross- which is more about Nazism than religion, etc); and the occasional antireligious blasphemy (Disciple, The Antichrist, In the Name of God, etc).

The latter of which possibly could be compared to Ghost in content.

I wasn't comparing them to Slayer musically. I was comparing them to Slayer in terms of the manner in which both bands clearly use the marketing aspects of Satanism, anti-religious messaging/iconography, etc. to sell records.

Slayer is sold as "the most evil band in the world" because their lyrical content, their aggression, their album iconography, etc. are all depictions of evil and are anti-religious and anti-Christian. Araya himself is a devout Catholic. He doesn't give a shit about the message the band says, nor does he hide behind any curtains about his faith. He believes, King doesn't. King writes evil shit, Araya reads it and responds positively almost every time talking about how it'll piss people off... in a good way. Meaning it gets the band press and publicity. When "God Hates Us All" came out I remember the rash of Christian outcry centered around the title, calling for boycotts of the band. It was free press. They sold more records because of the protests of those idiots than they probably would have had they just ignored it and said nothing.

Ghost largely operates in the same manner. There are already dozens of Christian groups who rally around calling for boycotts to their concerts, calling them blasphemers, agents of Satan, etc. It actually helps the band. It's free press for them to present their "evil" band that's marketed specifically to kids who love to buy "controversial" t-shirts and artwork. Hell, I was one of those kids for years. I still am in some respects. Certainly with Ghost. Before I even listened to any of their songs I saw their photo shoots and went "whoa, cool!", then listened and was hooked. I thought it was hilarious that they had an "evil Pope" for a singer and that all the members were "Nameless Ghouls".

Yea for sure man, I understand the comparison, makes sense from a publicity standpoint. Musically, the bands are very different but in terms of exposure (especially now that Hanneman- who was admittedly all about the music and not so much the gimmick- is gone) they're very much alike.

I'm not a fan of the new SLAYER singles they've released so far, hopefully the rest of the new album is more rooted in old school thrash in the vein of World Painted Blood, by again, without Jeff, my expectations aren't as high as usual.

I'll definitely pick up this Ghost album also, seems they've really turned a corner in terms of bringing that heavier sound that they have teased but never really committed to in the past.

Ghost, to me, basically started out as a kind of Black Sabbath tribute band. Nearly the entire Opus Eponymous record sounded like a throwback to that sound that Sabbath really carved out. Infestissumam saw a noticeable evolution in both sound quality and theatrics. They brought in a lot more operatic elements ("Infestissumam" and "Year Zero" were heavy with operatic influence) and upped the melodies as well.

Thus far, from what I've been able to glean from the few tracks that have trickled out (live) and the new single, Meliora is going to be almost a blend between them, bringing back and increasing the more metal influences from Opus to fuse with the melody and dramatics/operatic elements of Infest. It's a natural progression, really.

Any After The Burial suggestions. Been watching the Suicide Silence memorial show and the After The Burial vocalist seems kind of cool and was wondering what stuff I should check out.

My mate's brother's band. Shameless plug. They're actually really good for an unsigned band

Hmm, I should probably post in this thread more since I'm a pretty active member of our metal scene here in RI. Lots of my friends play in bands so I'm usually at shows all the time. Check out my buddies Balam if you dig classic shit like Sabbath, stoner rock, fuzz, Kyuss, etc. They're fucking amazing. Only a matter of time before their signed.
