The Mosh Pit: The Official Metal Thread

I've never even heard the term "djent" before that post. Wanna post up a track or two you think are good?

I am super late to this discussion, but my current theme in WZCW is by Periphery, and they're considered the masters of djent.

It's a long song just as a forewarning.

They're awesome live too.

They're good and the drummer is a beast. He drums and sings for the band.

So I just read that the guitarist of Slipknot was stabbed in the head, by his brother, while drunk, and in a knife fight on the front lawn.

And Wayne Static died of booze and pills.

Still not as good as Mayhem. Whose lead singer blew his brains out with a shotgun prompting his band mates to use a photo of his corpse as the cover art for their next live album. But not before they boiled and ate a piece of the brain.

IDR mentioned Ghost BC so here's one of favorites.

And some Lamb of God thrown in as well.

Lamb of God fuckin' rules.

Just started listening to Dope again. Such an awesome band with so many great songs.

The mayhem thing was mainly Euronymous' idea wasn't it though? The rest of the band were really worried about their friend but then the ******** went and gave him a shotgun with ammo for a birthday and left him alone for a day to see what would happen. That guy was an absolute psycho who kinda deserved to get killed by the bassist, he was the one who took the photo and leaked it out for the bootleg album and apparently tried to make a necklace with the bits of skull he found too if I remember correctly. Dunno if he tried to eat brains but I reckon the other guys wouldn't have.

Yeah. Euronymous was not "all there." Varg Vikernes wasn't either. Wasn't any real surprise that Euro got stabbed to death.

Wait, this story is legit?

Them eating the brain is alleged though Euro claimed it to be truth. Them using Dead's corpse as a cover art is 100% real.

Oh yeah Varg's a bit of an odd bloke to be sure but he's normal compared to that guy.

I wonder what Necrobutcher and Hellhammer's thoughts are on the leaked photo being used as the bootleg album cover, especially Necrobutcher sine he always seemed like a down to Earth kind of dude.

Hahah google "mayhem band" and find the Wikipedia article, it'll tell you all you need to know about them but there's some documentaries that are pretty interesting too. They're one of the classic burn down the churches kind of black metal (ie they're kinda shit) but the story of the band and all the crazy stuff they've gotten up to is some quality reading material.

I assume that they were fine with it, because obviously no one protested Euro's ideas.

Varg got out of prison only to be arrested and convicted again because he purchased illegal firearms. I read something last year where he was trying to incite terrorist acts against Jews and Muslims :suspic:. Though I think he got off with a fine.

Despite that I still like Mayhem. Attila Csihar is their current vocalist and I loved him in Aborym.

Euro and Varg are/were just way out there. Talk about living the gimmick, eh?

I'm not a huge black metal fan, but I'd have to say I prefer Emperor or older Behemoth and Bathory to anything Mayhem or Burzum ever did.

Emperor had their fair of shit too. But just an ex-drummer. Have you heard Zyklon or Ihsahn? Both have Emperor members. Zyklon is like more brutal death metal, where Ihsahn is more progressive I think.

Mayhem was pretty popular in my local scene back in high school. For their music not their ideologies or political views.

I wasn't a fan of them. They were influential in the black metal genre in the same way GG Allin was for punk rock. Mayhem gave a legit dangerous edge to metal, and GG Allin gave a more legit fuck authority edge to punk rock, but in the end the music wasn't what was important to the legacy of either. I've heard Bite It You Scum covered way better by a local thrash/crust band then GG could ever do.

That said I am a big fan of the style of black metal, but a lot of the Neo Nazi/Satanist stances of some of the original bands disinterests me.

Satanic beliefs were fronts for some. Like Bathory. They started as a satanic band, but Quarthorn never had those beliefs. So they transitioned into something he did believe in and that was his Norse ancestry. Immortal was never satanic or even occultist.

Though I'd say bands like Marduk, Gorgoroth, Venom, Emperor starting out, and Dissection were and still are. Though Emperor not so much now, and the lead from Dissection committed ritual suicide - which is a shame because I dug his last album.

You guys know a lot of crazy stuff. I'm no fan of Santanic or Black Metal. Guess that answered why I was so lost. I thought something crazy happened at a Mayhem Festival lol. I'm going to Google what you all have mentioned since it sounds interesting for sure.

I do know that Cronos has said the majority of Venom lyrics were written intentionally to piss people off and create a buzz, whether or not the band necessarily believed in it or not. This is the same guy who requested the song "In League with Satan" be played at his funeral, so take it for what it's worth.

I usually don't have a problem with Satanic themes or lyrics in music, it's when it becomes blatantly anti-something that sort of discourages me from listening. Like Deicide's "Bible Basher" for example.

I have heard a song or two from Ihsahn, wasn't real crazy about it, I'll have to look up Zyklon and see what they're all about.

Paid $25 bucks for two tickets to see Motley Crue and Alice Cooper. Figured for so cheap, I may as well cross them off the musical bucket list. Some decent shows coming around, but the majority of tickets are waaaaay too pricey. Like The Rolling Stones. I wouldnt mind seeing them, but never have been much of a fan & certainly am not paying $250 for the cheap seats.

Plus with the price of drinks and $30-40 bucks for a shirt, on a normal night I cant get out of a show for less than a hundred including tickets. Add parking and it can be a bitch on the wallet. My concert attendance has been on a decline over the past few years though. Just not too many bands I give a shit about seeing anymore I guess.

I bought a ticket to see Coal Chamber, Soil and The Defiled for £20. Thought Coal Chamber and Soil for £20 wasn't to bad and I checked out The Defiled and they seem pretty good.

Not sure if I'd buy a t-shirt though for me t-shirts at gigs are 50/50 when it comes to good looking ones. One thing I've noticed is that there's a lot of bands that don't do posters anymore. The last couple of gigs I went to there were no posters, I had to steal the advertising ones. If bands did more posters I'd certainly buy those.

Where are you watching them? I was tempted to get a ticket to that tour. I've seen SOiL twice (first time supporting Shinedown with their replacement singer and the 2nd time when Ryan had rejoined), and they were relly good both times. I'd be interested in seeing Dope though, who are also on the bill.

Seeing them at Warwick University which isn't too far from my home. I'm pretty stoked actually, I'll need to check out Dope as well
