Sam's Thread of Chattin' w/ Jake & Other Robust Subjects

I'm going to tell you all something and I don't want you to judge me:

I like Gladiator.

It's not on the same level as Alien or Blade Runner, no, but it's pretty good. It's enjoyable. Enjoyable enough that he's been chasing it with much shittier historical epics ever since. And then he tried to make another Alien movie. And then he's going to do another Blade Runner.

Peter Jackson is the king of the accidental masterpiece. Fellowship of the Ring is exceptional. He was given the exact same resources five more times and made nothing but shite. In fact, I think each film might be worse than the last. In fact in fact, remember King Kong?

And Mad Max is like Baby's First Feminist Film, so I can see why people thick enough to fight for men's rights would be upset with it. I saw it again. Fucking sick. I think, yeah, maybe five stars.

Is it decent? My sister's a massive Moomin fan, was thinking of taking her and my Nephew.

Mighty NorCal, the man who told me to wash myself after I gushed about the original Avengers, telling me Avengers 2 is better than, well, either Mad Max or The Moomins. Both modern classics.

Whoa whoa whoa what the fuck?

I meant better than Avengers 1. Havent been to see the other two. May see Mad Max this weekend. I wasn't going to bother since the hype about the movie has already drove it into the ground for me, but the wife wants to see it. Im agreeable because the new movie theatre has self-serve snacks.

I disagree.

  1. Mad Max: Fury Road ★★★★★
  2. It Follows ★★★★
  3. Whiplash ★★★★
  4. Ex Machina ★★★
  5. Avengers: Age of Ultron ★★★
  6. Fast & Furious 7 ★★★
  7. Kingsman: The Secret Service ★★★
  8. Inherent Vice ★★
  9. Big Hero 6 ★★

Revised score for Ex Machina, which jumps five places after the girlfriend wanted to see it, and for Fury Road, which gets better every time I think about it.

I think I'm going to start watching new films again soon, namely Spy (which is not as shit as it looks apparently) and that documentary with the word Silence in the title.

Oh, you're one of those, eh?

I think a barman just expected me to tip him. Is that a thing people do? I've never done that in my life. He was foreign - maybe they do tip barmen where he comes from.

Is automatic included gratuity an unknown concept to you guys? In a lot of places over here, they just automatically include that shit in your check. It enrages me. I'd go to war over less. (clearly, since I went to Iraq, which has been revealed to have been about...well nothing, basically)

He made a very big point of getting me a cold Coke, which I would fucking expect, and trying to make conversation, which I'd rather he didn't. Thus, no tip.

Tipping bar tenders is not normal here at all, while the idea of gratuity is usually saved for restaurants.

Mandatory tips is something of an oxymoron.

Of course, then there are places that charge a gratuity on the check and then still expect you to leave a tip... They can fuck right off.

In fact, tipping in general can fuck right off. Perpetuating a broken system.
