Sam's Thread of Chattin' w/ Jake & Other Robust Subjects

This is the only opportunity I'll have to post this gif, though one wonders if I should be taking it:

INT. SAM'S MIND - ETERNAL NIGHT

CINEMA
Hey, Sam, wanna watch some Oscar bait?

SAM
Not really, man. Sounds like that would cut severely into my *********ing time.

CINEMA
Come on! It'll only cost £12!

SAM
I'll be honest - I'm *********ing right now.

I know it's been a bit divisive but honestly, I really liked Birdman. A lot more than I expected to.

It balanced being quite meta without being overly pretentious and the drum score was terrific. Speaking of drums, that Whiplash is meant to be quite a treat so I'll aim to catch that when it's out.

Look, I didn't even get past the first two episodes of The Shield. Oz doesn't even share the name of a wrestling faction - why do you think I would be bothered with it at all?

If you get it off feel free to host me for the day (my train back is 6 which is later than the normal 4 but half the price)

1. Whiplash ★★★★
2. American Sniper ★★★

3. The Theory Of Everything ★★★
4. Foxcatcher ★★★
5. Unbroken ★★★
6. Taken 3 ★★★

7. Birdman ★★
8. Exodus: Gods And Kings ★★
9. Into The Woods ★
10. The Woman In Black: Angel Of Death ★

This year is already a chore. The theme so far is that films that I am liking go on too long and that makes me lose interest. Foxcatcher, Unbroken & American Sniper, I'm looking at you.

The year won't improve with that Mortdecai or The Gambler. Fuck you, Friday.

I'm quitting my job. More time, less money. Putting paid to that whole "time is money" theory, eh? What effect this will have on my cinemagoing is anyone's guess. I'm yet to get to one though.

Wild was first on my annual Oscars roundup and it was alright. Three stars, but a decent showing from Witherspoon and the Pacific Crest Trail. Weird pie to find Nick Hornby's fingers in in either case.

I watched a film! I did it! I did it all by myself! Wooooo!

  1. Whiplash ★★★★

It's not uncommon for a film to make me feel inadequate. Normally said film would be really well directed or well written or, I dunno, well lit and I'll be all, "I probably couldn't do that." Whiplash is well directed and well written - and well lit - but it made me feel inadequare because it was like JK Simmons was commenting on how shit I was at the drums or how big a failure my dad was or how small my dick was.

And what a final ten minutes.

Mate, I rewrote the shit out of my CV. It's still shit but that's down to my failings as a person rather than my failings as a writer. If you'd embellished that much in a four hour period, you'd want some light entertainment involving JK Simmons screaming homophobic slurs at people too.

You'd appreciate this conversation I heard on the tube yesterday:

Bloke "I just think it's needless".
Woman "I see your point".
Bloke "yeah, why swear when you can use the wonders of the English language. It's just so common".
Woman "Well I think you're a pretentious cunt. No other words in the English language would say it any better".

I wanted to marry that girl there and then.

Watched The Imitation Game and Birdman. One of them was better than the other, but the other ended with the line 'Today we call them "computers".', which got a great laugh on my end.

Hoping to catch Inherent Vice before the week is out, and I feel like adding the Razzie Redeemer Award nominees too, so I have a good excuse to make all my mates watch John Wick.

Big Hero 6 was awesome, but once again fell foul to bizarre text on the screen ending.

Animation was unbelievable though. Honestly thought there were real people in it at some points.

I'm currently unable to drive so my cinema viewing has taken a serious hit. Such a shame because I'm actually missing stuff I want to see like Big Hero Six and Inherent Vice.
