Sam's Thread of Chattin' w/ Jake & Other Robust Subjects

I don't think either of us have seen it. I don't think either of us are enthusiastic about it, though that obviously won't stop Jake from watching it.

After a rewatch of The Guest last night-- well, it's still fucking amazing. I even spotted a second You're Next easter egg ("YOU'RE NEXT" is scrawled on one of the walls in the Halloween set). It's a big, warm, synthy hug.

2015

1. The Theory Of Everything ★★★
2. Birdman ★★

I really wish I liked Birdman.

Not to mention, having a bit of knowledge on the background of the events and people portrayed in the film, I am a bit confused as to why it was done the way it was done.

I think maybe I need to watch it again. Perhaps I didn't pick up on some subtleties.

Sam, I'm seeing Foxcatcher on Friday and it'll be my 7th of the year at the cinema so far. Tell me where my life is going wrong.

To be fair, my girlfriend runs one so I only pay for half the films I see. I've also been retired for 6 years and it's hard to fill those hours.

I went on a date with a girl recently who lives in Stoke and she said there was nothing to do there. She was boring as fuck though. She didn't even go into pubs. Of course you think there's nothing to do if you don't go into pubs - there's nothing to do anywhere if you don't go into pubs. Well, maybe if you're into arts and crafts or baking or going to the cinema.

American Sniper -

Not sure why they did what they did....The book is chock-full of amazing stories from war, and yet the film chose not to depict most of them, and instead, fabricated the main storyline into something that is utterly unbeliveable.

Also, somehow managed to make a film mostly based in intense urban combat into something that is quite dull.

How one fucking dimensional was every character? Especially his wife. Lord.

Between your impressions on Foxcatcher and American Sniper (you sure read a lot for a member of the NJexus) my list of new films I'm actually bothered about seeing is dwindling. In lieu of that, I saw three of my very favourites at the Prince Charles over the course of the last two days:

  • Aliens ★★★★★
  • Pulp Fiction ★★★★★
  • Alien ★★★★★

Without a crowd, turns out it's difficult to remember just how funny Pulp Fiction is or just how exciting Aliens is. It's stating the obvious but Hudson steals that film. It was hard not to get goosebumps when the crowd exploded at "Get away from her, you bitch!"

Alien just doesn't scare people like it used to, and people laughed at some of the effects. Don't worry, Alien, I still love you.

Normally I'd be an Alien man but it was the influence of that crowd that tipped it on the night - they just took Aliens that much more seriously. Alien's the better film but it's just not as big a crowdpleaser.

As for the reading, keep in mind ive spent nearly three years of my life in places with often no heat or AC, let alone television.

You may like Foxcatcher more than me. Perhaps I just wasn't picking up on the subtleties. Good acting all 'round, no doubt, I just don't get why they went the way they did with the script.

Amateur wrestling is interesting to me. I can't imagine a better fix for that than a movie from the bloke who made Moneyball. What's the one thing more boring than baseball? Spreadsheets!

If we only watched movies for Kurt Angle cameos, all we'd watch would be The Fighter and that one movie where he's a serial rapist (and that the terms "Kurt Angle rape movie" won't find on Google).

Warrior, bro. You're thinking of Warrior.

The Fighter was Batman's version; Warrior was Bane's.

You mean to tell me that's not present day Kurt Angle?
