Sam's Thread of Chattin' w/ Jake & Other Robust Subjects

Right? "Watch me tear up the dance floor, dude" could end up being the quote of the year - and I'm not even sure it's right.

Close enough.

It was like that psychiatrist show Gabriel Byrne did that I've never seen. But with an awesome dance scene.

  1. Whiplash ★★★★
  2. Kingsman: The Secret Service ★★★
  3. Ex Machina ★★

Kingsman isn't half as funny as it thinks it is but it's twice as funny as it should be. The last time Mark Millar wrote something and Matthew Vaughn directed it, it was Kick-Ass, which had one standout character and a lot of violence. Kingsman has several decent-ish characters and a lot of violence. It's more a grown-up Spy Kids than an immature James Bond.

Ex Machina's a student film with a massive effects budget. Oscar Isaacs is great. Domhnall Gleeson is as boring as ever.

Roxy in Kingsman and whoever Domnhall Gleeson plays in Ex Machina (Caleb, maybe?) jointly win the Non-Character of the Month Award.

You know, I get the criticisms about that last portion of the Dark Knight.

If I had been one of the uniformed individuals on the civilian boat, I would have blown up the criminals with no hesitation or remorse.

I can't believe im the only one, especially with numerous children on the boat.

Shame too - it's pretty bloody good up until that point. Begins is still, at the very least, the most cohesive of the three.

I've got Big Hero Six and Inherent Vice after work tonight in a double bill that's as logical as it is reasonably priced.

I'm assuming you're still grounded/too busy sending gay men to your friend's house to watch films, Jakey.

Pretty much. I can't move much. Drove myself the cinema to see Kingman and set back my recovery a good six months. You'll overtake me this year.

Big Hero 6 is your standard kid's fare with nary a reason to give a fuck to be found but some decent slapstick comedy.

Inherent Vice is the most well crafted, excruciatingly long and boring film since, well, The Master - only The Master had showier performances. It really is like you're the only person at the party who isn't high.

I've thoroughly enjoyed catching up on your film ratings boys. If only Sam would USE HIS FUCKING LETTERBOX'D ACCOUNT MORE OFTEN.

Oh, fuck - someone actually gave a shit about that thing? I'm blushing.

It Follows tonight. I asked a lady with whom I am deeply enamoured to accompany me. She said no. My mate's coming instead. He has a car. Swings and roundabouts.

If your film's title appears and a sinister chord plays, you're getting at least four stars from me.

I see you weren't as keen on Inherent Vice as the crowd. Me either. I mean, I enjoyed good portions of it, but most of it I just thought to myself "Wow, this is terribly fucking boring". They aimed straight for my exact demographic, the stoner with a fetish for the 60s, hippies, and the entire counterculture literature movement that Pynchon himself was a part of at that time, and yet, they failed to hook me. Like, I went in basically waiting to give this shit two thumbs up and four stars and they fucked themselves by following the book too closely and having way too many scenes of dialogue that leads nowhere. I can still appreciate the tone and comedy and direction but man, what a massive fucking disappointment otherwise. Looked like it would be a film I would fall in love with, wound up being totally nonplussed about it.

Paul W. S. Anderson, who directed a frankly-not-as-bad-as-some Alien movie. You'd pay to have the three star in some sort of goofball comedy, like The Darjeeling Limited - or Three Men and a Movie.
