2012 Movie Tournament Thread!!

I think Justin Bieber's film was just called Never Say Never, wasn't it? Never Say Never Again was the unofficial Bond film.

I'd like to be able to agree that some films are objectively better than others, if only because it makes it easier to look down upon the plebs, but I can't. The fun is in the justification, he said half sincerely.

Looper.

Not really. I couldn't justify putting a 2-hour-old film in the tournament. It was really, really good though and I recommend ya'll go see it. Rian Johnson gets a lot of praise from me for refusing to convolute what could have a train wreck of complicated ideas and concepts. Hit the ground running, make it abundantly clear that they're messing with time in this movie, and refuse to stop and explain the scientific mechanics behind it all. Focus on what matters: the characters and the story. It was so well-executed.

Light spoilers in the next blurb.

I'm sure this week there will be a lot of sci-fi fanboys complaining about how "this didn't make sense because ______" and "if that happened, and that guy time travelled, then _____ and then _____ wouldn't have happened, so this is dumb". They will all have missed the point entirely. They wanted to go out and make a wholly originally action/thriller, use some really cool plot devices, and not bore you with over-explained details you won't care about in 30 seconds anyway. There's actually a really funny seen where Bruce Willis and JGL are sitting together and JGL asks how it's all possible. Willis pretty much says "No. We're not fucking going through this. It's too complicated, nobody cares; the point is it works, we're here, and we're moving on!"

Two thumbs up

A-
Go see it!

I just thought everyone would like to know that I've finished compiling the list of films for the 2012 Movie Tournament. It will begin here sometimes in the next 2 weeks, in "at least its own sub-section", according to KB.

I started with about 120 films, and started narrowing it down with all the choices you guys threw at me. What I came up with is a definite 55 films, with 9 spots left to be determined in a single preliminary round. Most of the preliminary matches will be themed, like "Obscure Japanese Animated Films" or "Quentin Movies That Aren't Pulp Fiction or Kill Bill", etc. The idea is to weed out films that have many like them already in the tournament, bringing us to a grand total of 64 films to do battle between October and the holiday season.

If anybody would like to help me "seed" the 55 films, just let me know. I could use some secondary opinions. And just so YOU know, I've heard the complaints about Citizen Kane, and I empathize. It will not be the #1 seed, and it very well may have to fight for its right to be represented. We'll see... :)
