2012 Movie Tournament: Final List + Help Wanted

I don't really see a lot of anime films on the list and I doubt the ones included will make it far. Also, Spirited Away is highly overrated. Boom.

So I wrote this big long rant about how I really don't like Tastycles, and how he's the only person on the whole forums that I straight-up just do not like. It was pretty harsh. Yep. I'm just gonna go ahead and not post that.

You're tearing me apart HGR.

As much as I feel Rebel Without A Cause should be included, I likely won't be involved enough to make any sort of arguments. However, I'd suggest Carlito's Way too. I haven't seen Scarface in a while, but from memory, this is the better De Palma/Pacino film.

Here is a preview of my arguments in the tournament:

Fight Club is fucking shit, and if you think it's in any way clever, you're a ******.

Citizen Kane is better than Scotty Pilgrim vs. The World. I've never seen either, but would bet my house that this is true.

There are too many anime films in this tournament because the Venn diagram for people who talk about wrestling on the internet and who like anime have a big crossovers. There's a million foreign language films that are far better, e.g. the entire history of French cinema.

Fight Club is shit, and I can't believe it made it to the second round.

Fight Club is completely and utterly shit, why won't it die? Even if I shoot it in the neck WHICH MAKES ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE WHATSOEVER.

As much as I like Fight Club, if it were to have come up against La Haine then it would take a bit of a beating. The subject matter of males struggling with their identities just has a lot more power behind it in La Haine due to the contextual setting of the film. Plus any film that can throw in a random dolly zoom shot and not have it seem completely out of place gets some love from me.

Each to their own.

I completely agree with Loveless.

Fight Club is a decent film, for two thirds. The ending is fucking shit.

The entire film is a plot hole.

How can he ring himself up? How is that possible? The entire turning point of his life is when he rings up the other guy and then goes to live with him but he is the other guy. So he can't ring him up, because then there wouldn't be a telephone. Not to mention the fact that nobody in the world would be interested in joining a man punching himself in the face. Without doubt the most overrated film in history.

To be fair, that's not a plot hole.

The conversation on the telephone was in his head. There could have been a physical telephone there, or not, it makes no difference. This isn't a plot hole. Also, men being innately physical beings is hardly a new revelation. Just look at the rise of MMA, and where UFC is at today.

There's several more where that came from, and the end is quite possibly the worst ending in the history of cinema. It deserves to be in the tournament, because a lot of people like it, but it's still shit.

On the whole, I don't think Killam's list is bad, nobody's ever going to be happy with these things, but the majority of films cater for the masses of the board. The problems that it has as a be all and end all are that the audience of this board are not representative of everyone who likes films. If you asked the average film buff, you wouldn't get any anime, loads of Hitchcock and things like art house German pornos but most here haven't seen them.

I'll vote when I've seen both, but it's very difficult to compare films even when you have seen them both, comparing Wall-E with Terminator 2 without having seen both is impossible, though many will do so.

Kinda sad Tree of LIfe is going to lose in the first round. If for no other reason, than most of the few comments on the thread are in favor of it.

I don't suppose you want to consider moving the tournament into a spam forum, do you? I can see the sense of it being in Movies and having it in Spam may be a killer for the less known films, but I've always felt the non-spam forums discourage people from posting.
