Venomous debut

GREENSBORO, North Carolina – With the 2011 WWE Draft over and Edge retired, Randy Orton wasted no time making an impact on the blue brand. He heralded in his arrival on Friday nights by dropping Drew McIntyre, Alex Riley and Brodus Clay with stinging RKOs.

Randy Orton & Christian def. Alberto Del Rio & Brodus Clay
If there was any question about what impact Randy Orton would make on SmackDown, he quickly made it known that he is a force to be reckoned with. In the night’s main event, The Viper downed big Brodus Clay to help secure a win for his team. Will Orton and Christian carry this momentum into their respective matches this Sunday at Extreme Rules?

Layla vs. Michelle McCool ended in a Double Disqualification
The tensions boiling within Team Lay-Cool finally erupted in a match pitting the two Divas against each other. After fighting tooth-and-nail outside the ring, their match ended in a Double Disqualification. Afterward, Layla challenged Michelle to a match at Extreme Rules. Michelle accepted, under the condition that it would be a Loser Leaves WWE Match.

Rey Mysterio def. Mark Henry by Disqualification
After being drafted to Raw, Rey Mysterio was looking to leave SmackDown in style in a match against formidable opponent Mark Henry. After a competitive bout, Mysterio looked well on his way to victory after downing The World’s Strongest Man with the 619. However, just as Mysterio was poised to capitalize, Cody Rhodes rushed into the ring and launched a vicious assault. The ugly attack spilled into the WWE Universe, and finally back into the ring, where Rhodes shoved a paper bag over Mysterio’s head. Who will prevail when the bitter rivals collide at Extreme Rules?

WWE Tag Team Champions Big Show & Kane def. Justin Gabriel & Heath Slater
In their first title defense since winning the WWE Tag Team Championships, Big Show and Kane thoroughly dominated former champions Justin Gabriel and Heath Slater. With simultaneous monstrous chokeslams, the champions drove their challengers into the canvas for the win.

Sin Cara def. Jack Swagger
After being attacked by Sin Cara three weeks ago, Jack Swagger was looking for some payback. When Michael Cole handed Swagger a mysterious object, it looked as if The All-American American was going to use it against Sin Cara. However, the high-flying new Superstar proved too quick for Swagger and wrapped him up for the pinfall. Afterward, Sin Cara launched himself from the top rope onto the still-reeling Swagger.

United States Champion Sheamus vs. Kofi Kingston ended in a No Contest
United States Champion Sheamus rushed into the arena, taking down Kofi Kingston from behind before their match even began. The brutality continued inside the ring, as the 2010 King of the Ring pummeled Kingston, leaving him in a lifeless heap. Certainly, the entire SmackDown locker room took notice of the brand’s newest, dangerous competitor.

Randy Orton RKO'd Drew McIntyre and Alex Riley
When Randy Orton kicked off the night by introducing himself to the SmackDown audience, a slew of Superstars wanted their chance in the spotlight. However, The Viper quickly asserted his dominance with a pair of devastating RKOs to Drew McIntyre and Alex Riley. When Alberto Del Rio and Brodus Clay came calling, Christian rushed to Orton’s side. Before an all-out brawl, SmackDown General Manager Theodore Long arranged for the foursome to officially meet in the night’s main event.

Christian def. Alberto Del Rio (World Heavyweight Championship Ladder Match)

At Extreme Rules, Christian fulfilled a lifelong dream, triumphing over Alberto Del Rio in a brutal Ladder Match to capture his first World Heavyweight Championship, with the help of his best friend Edge. In few WWE matches are the stakes as elevated as the infamous Ladder Match. After the competing Superstars undoubtedly sacrifice their bodies and take years off their careers, only one of them will climb high above the ring and gain possession of the hanging championship title. From the opening bell, both Superstars fought tooth and nail, enduring unspeakable steel-infused torment for the right to carve their place in history and determine the future of the vacant World Title. Though Christian walked into the ring an established master of the rungs of destiny, his opponent made up for his lack of experience with pure ruthless determination. As Christian looked ready to grab the championship, Brodus Clay entered the ring, hurling him down to the canvas. Del Rio then attempted to climb to glory. But, his seemingly certain success was "horned in on" by the sudden emergence of Edge. The smiling Ultimate Opportunist cruised into the arena in a Jeep. The distraction he caused with his horn allowed Captain Charisma time to push over Del Rio's ladder, sending him out of the ring and onto Clay and Ricardo Rodriguez. Then, with Edge cheering him on, Christian rose to the top of the ladder and claimed the World Heavyweight Title for the biggest victory of his illustrious career. Edge's involvement in the match was completely justified, since the road to Christian's heroic triumph began with the 11-time World Champion's shocking forced retirement, leaving him no choice but to relinquish the World Heavyweight Championship. Ironically, it was Captain Charisma – Edge’s best friend of 27 years – who stepped up. Overcoming 19 other Superstars in an impromptu SmackDown Battle Royal, he earned the right to face the already established No. 1 contender Alberto Del Rio – the very Superstar who had put him out of action for months – for the vacant championship in a Ladder Match. The WWE Universe was stunned yet again when the 2011 WWE Draft changed Del Rio's "destined" path, sending the elitist Superstar to Monday Night Raw. Would he take the World Heavyweight Championship along with him, leaving Friday night's most explosive show without its crowned jewel? Christian answered that question at Extreme Rules with a resounding no. In his 13-year career – in addition to numerous tag team championships with The Rated-R Superstar – Christian's glorious list of accomplishments includes the Intercontinental, Hardcore, European, Light Heavyweight and of course the ECW Titles. But, before his monumental victory over his aristocratic adversary, he had never held a World Title. Now that Christian has captured his first World Championship, will he truly create a whole new era in WWE? And with Del Rio on Raw, who will step up to challenge him?

Rey Mysterio def. Cody Rhodes (Falls Count Anywhere Match)

If Cody Rhodes was bitter and angry before Extreme Rules, he is surely seething with rage after having lost to Rey Mysterio in a Falls Count Anywhere Match. Utilizing a new trick in his ring arsenal – spitting a mysterious blue-green mist into his opponent’s face – Mysterio was able to disorient Rhodes and finish him off with a 619 and springboard splash combo for the pinfall. Taking full advantage of the Falls Count Anywhere Match format, the two arch rivals fought it out on the entrance ramp, the arena stairs, concession area, then finally within the ring. Mysterio’s victory avenged his loss to Rhodes at WrestleMania XXVII. However, the disdain between Mysterio and Rhodes started well before WrestleMania. The Jan. 21 edition of SmackDown was the fateful night when Mysterio blasted Rhodes with a 619 with an exposed leg brace, instantly breaking Rhodes’ nose. Ever since that night, Rhodes has been on a mission to disfigure Mysterio’s face. With Mysterio headed to Raw by way of the 2011 WWE Draft, was Extreme Rules Rhodes’ final chance to hurt Mysterio? Or, will he continue in his quest to maim Mysterio?

Kofi Kingston def. Sheamus (Tables Match; New United States Champion)

There’s a piece of wisdom that has been passed around the WWE locker room for years — always brings your boots to the arena, because you never know when you’re going to have a match. Tonight, that old adage paid off for Kofi Kingston in a big way. Placed in an impromptu Tables Match against United States Champion Sheamus by SmackDown General Manager Teddy Long, the high-flyer was ready for action and proved it by smashing The Celtic Warrior through the hardwood to capture the coveted title for a second time. It wasn’t just a great victory for Kingston, but a taste of retribution. After beating Sheamus fair and square on Monday night, Kofi was brutalized by the angry Irishman in a vicious attack on SmackDown. It was the kind of wicked assault Sheamus has become known for — dirty, underhanded and ruthless. But the rampaging Superstar couldn’t cheat his way to victory tonight — even in a match he selected himself. As the defending champion, the Irish Superstar was given permission to choose the bout’s stipulation by Long. Immediately, The Celtic Warrior asked for a Tables Match, which shouldn’t have come as a surprise. After all, it’s the type of contest that brought Sheamus his first WWE Championship when he sent John Cena through a table in December of 2009. The luck of the Irish may have been on the big man’s side on that winter evening, but there was no four-leaf clover that could have saved him from the frenzy of Kofi Kingston tonight. Aggressive from the opening bell, the West African Superstar displayed a fervor that has been lacking in many of his recent matches. Fighting back from the best shots Sheamus threw at him, Kingston put it all on the line when he jumped off the top rope to put The Celtic Warrior through a table on the arena floor. The maneuver may have been high-risk, but it resulted in high reward.

Layla def. Michelle McCool (Loser Leaves WWE Match)

Best friends have officially become foes. In one of the biggest victories of her career, Layla has forced Michelle McCool to leave WWE in an emotionally-charged Loser Leaves WWE Match. But the former Flawless BFFs left Extreme Rules stunned after Kharma leveled Michelle after the bell. After apologizing to the Divas locker room and surprisingly receiving a wish of good luck from several Divas, Layla turned her recent streak of losses around when the Diva Search winner had to fight to stay in WWE. In a No-Disqualification, No Count-out Match, Michelle hit Layla with the Faithbreaker, but Layla countered, pinning her former Team Flawless counterpart. A bittersweet Layla left her one-time best friend shocked after her win, and, just when it appeared Michelle would breakdown in tears alone in the ring, the mysterious Kharma emerged. In an act of sheer strength and wicked determination, Kharma quickly destroyed Michelle, leaving her face-down on the mat after her final, fateful match in WWE. It was a moment that left not only the Divas – but the WWE Universe – stunned. Before their bestie break-up at Extreme Rules, Team Flawless had been inseparable for more than a year, leaving an indelible mark in WWE history. Layla was the final Diva to win the Women’s Championship in May 2010, while Michelle unified the Divas Championship in September of the same year. These beauties bullied and battled their way through the Divas locker room, unashamed of their oftentimes cruel behavior, no matter who they offended. But after a WrestleMania XXVII loss to a team including Snooki of Jersey Shore fame, cracks began forming in Lay-Cool’s one-time flawless friendship. Layla suffered several losses in singles action, causing a major rift with Michelle. The English-born Diva insisted on couples therapy, but real-talking it out only made matters worse. Michelle viciously attacked her former partner in Flawless after she lost on Raw. Following an emotional match against each other which ended in a double-count out, Layla offered a challenge to Michelle: A No-Disqualification, No Count-out Match. Michelle agreed and boldly added that the loser must leave WWE. Surely Michelle never expected to fall to her former BFF at Extreme Rules, but she certainly wouldn’t have imagined being brutally attacked by Kharma. With Michelle’s departure from WWE, who will Kharma set her wicked sights on next?

Big Show & Kane def. Wade Barrett & Ezekiel Jackson (WWE Tag Team Championship Lumberjack Match)

Abraham Lincoln once said, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” It’s an insight the members of The Corre should take to heart. Plagued by infighting and a lack of direction in recent weeks, the band of renegades continued to fall apart at Extreme Rules as Wade Barrett & Ezekiel Jackson failed to beat Big Show & Kane in a WWE Tag Team Championship Lumberjack Match. It was yet another disappointment for the squad of Barrett, Jackson, Heath Slater & Justin Gabriel. At WrestleMania XXVII, The Corre lost a huge Eight-Man Tag Team Match to Show, Kane, Kofi Kingston & Santino Marella. Weeks later, Slater & Gabriel dropped their tag titles to The World’s Largest Athlete & The Big Red Monster. This string of failures has had the team members at odds, constantly bickering instead of working as a unit. Tonight, Barrett & Jackson had the opportunity to put their group back on the right track. If they could take down two of the largest Superstars in WWE history, they’d prove that The Corre truly were the future of sports-entertainment. But even with Gabriel & Slater watching their backs, the duo couldn’t stay on the same page. Battling in a ring surrounded by WWE Superstars and NXT Rookies, Jackson looked impressive as he displayed his amazing strength by bodyslamming the 485-pound Big Show. But Barrett couldn’t resist the opportunity to batter his rival and tagged himself in. It was a serious error in judgment. After a failed attempt to deliver the Wasteland to The World’s Largest Athlete, the British Superstar was nailed with a chokeslam and pinned. This loss is yet another embarrassing setback for The Corre. Will it be a wakeup call for the group to finally get things together? Or is the set headed for a brutal breakup?

Spoiler alert, Daniel Bryan mutates into a giant robot and goes on a murderous rampage after defeating the returning Goldberg in a match.

Christian looks awesome with that belt, and those chants are awesome. He's all choked up, too.

Man, I got chills at the video package...

DANIEL BRYAN IS SUCH A NERD

and i love him

Also, that Jinder Mahal guy definitely has the look. He looks like someone important, and that's a good thing.

Also, I like that Daniel Bryan got the cheers for his entrance. Whether it was real or not, it means good things since either the crowd likes him or management likes him.
