WWE RAW LD 7/11/2011 - This Fire Burns

Why? Because he said Colt Cabana? Because he talked about things the IWC cares about?

The fact is when he worked inside of kayfabe, he was mediocre like normal. The only time he was entertaining is when he got to talk outside of kayfabe, which is only entertaining because no one else gets to.

Punk was the weak link, no doubt.

Because he got the crowd worked up and alive more than anyone in the segment, or for the whole show for that matter. Wrestling is all about getting the fans to care, and CM Punk that better than both McMahon and Cena.

Why does there have to be a weak link in that segment at all? All three guys did a great job and the crowd was hot for the entire thing, beginning to end. To rank them would be silly, as they all played three separate roles, but each played it to near perfection.

Slyfox must be smoking primo Crystal Meth if he thinks CM Punk was the "weak link" of that promo. I mean seriously he had the crowd eating from the palm of his hand the entire night not just in that last segment. Everything he said the crowd popped for and there's no denying that. For Christ sake they started an "Ice Cream" chant in the middle of the fucking show, tell me when was the last time you've seen a wrestling crowd chant for Ice Cream?

Sly, I know you're a Cena fanboy but would it kill you to just admit that Cena has been outclassed the last couple weeks buy Punk, seriously would it? I would also like to know whats up with the hate towards Punk, it seems like no matter what Punk does it's never good enough for you, you have to find holes in everything he does, did he do something to you when you were kids or are you just trying so hard to not be a part of the hated "IWC" that you'll shit on everything they love?

The whole "Punk should be gettng booed because he is the heel" annoys me greatly.

Sure, that is the normal way of things in the wrestling world but the same people who bring that up are usually the same people that say the WWE is getting stale and needs to try something different. And yet, once something different is tried, fault must be found with it and a championing of the glory days of a stale product. Oh, wait. This is the IWC afterall. Hypocritical irony comes with the cyber-territory.

As for the promo, I thought it was great. Vince once again showed his versatility by acting as the target of Punk's rant, taking the tirade like a business man would yet boiling with rage just below the surface. Punk's banter would have been nowhere near as effective if Vince had not reacted the right way.

What Cena had to say was very good and appropriate because by asking for a private jet, movie deals, sippy cups and ice cream bars, Punk is being hypocritical. He derided Cena for all of that just a fortnight ago and yet here he is demanding it all. I just was not feeling it from John - his delivery seemed just a little off at times.

Punk's material was again excellent. Indeed, it perhaps surpassed the "shoot" as it straddled the worlds of kayfabe and backstages politics. The hypocrisy was dialed up and yet at the same time the whole Boston dynasty (despite going over the heads of many non-Americans) does have an ounce of truth in it. Cena has been on top for so long and yet his gimmicks of never giving up still vaguely smell of an underdog. I also felt that Punk's delivery was excellent. He was able to change it up, play to the crowd, laugh at Cena, provoke Vince etc.

When all of those elements were brought together, it made for an excellent segment.

Why is it always kids vs. adults? Actually, I think that view is completely misguided. I'm an adult, 26 years old. In no way do I think the same way as 18 year old wrestling fans looking to be "outside the box" and "cool". Those people are the ones that boo Cena right? Because only kids can like Cena, yea? Well, I have no hatred for the guy at all. Hell, I respect the man for dealing with the bullshit he deals with and still busting his ass at his job more than I ever could dream of doing. I'm an adult and I don't see how other adults can't see that. I can't really understand that hate.

Anyone that hates John Cena the person is a misguided individual. John Cena the character is undeniably designed to appeal to kids in much broader numbers than adults. Not only is it obvious from the way he is used but he has even admitted as much on many occasions. Why then is it so crazy that a fair amount of adults dislike the character because they simply do not find it appealing? You can still respect someone but not like the character they play at all. When it comes to being in a wrestling crowd you are supposed to respond to the character.

I'll even give you one more example, Derek Jeter. Yes, bring on the red rep from X and other Bostonians HA! But seriously, a lot of Bostonians actually respect Jeter because he has literally done nothing wrong over the course of his career. His life is that of the white meat babyface. Tino Martinez said that Jeter's "big secret reveal" is that if he ever has a sip of alcohol, he won't drive a car. Quite different than all the DUI-laden athletes out there. He's a hero to many, from kids to adults, and he is so because he does things the right way. I do think there's a place in this world for a true hero, a guy who does things the right way whether it's "cool" or not. Jeter is that guy in life, Cena is that guy in wrestling. Both many a shit ton of money. Pretty sure there's a place for those guys.

Oh you silly New Yorkers. Jeter is anything but a squeaky clean pure hero. He is smug, has been a womanizer and just look at how he handled Arod for much of the time he has been there.

Barney really is a great comparison to Cena. Here is a fictional character that appeals to kids and was extremely successful wearing a combination of colors that is a real eyesore. It also is a character that gets just beat down often from a variety of more mature sources. It isn't a personal vendetta, it is just a natural reaction for many adults when looking at the childish simplicities that long since ceased to amuse them.

That's your problem then dude, because the masses love the guy. He may have gotten outpopped tonight, but if I were to make a conservative estimate of how many people were walking around with Cena related paraphernalia on tonight, I'd guess about 33%.

How can you even focus on the ring with that much gratuitous use of color and tackiness surrounding you?

I didn't know you had a wife, Sly. I've known you had a girlfriend, but I didn't know you got married. Congratulations to you.

I digress. Continue.
Thank you. Recently married.

The promo wasnt THAT good.

Fuck, CM PUnk could take a shit in the middle of the ring and the whole IWC *spooge spooge spooge spooge*

You have to be kidding. Have you not been reading this thread at all?

I've posted 40 times in this thread (well, 41 with this post) and the majority addresses what you have said. Go read.

Mhmm. If my favorite wrestler had nearly ruined a segment with poop jokes, I'd be singing the same song :lmao:

Nonsense, that promo was fucking pure gold. Better than any damn promo I've seen this year, including the promo Punk cut just two weeks back. Last night was absolutely amazing to watch, he had that crowd in the palm of his fuckin' hands in a way that hasn't been seen in wrestling since the days of guys like Austin and Rock. If anything we aren't raving enough about that promo.

Of course Cena came out and nearly ruined the entire thing with his juvenile 12-year old dick and fart jokes, but Punk's work was so amazing that nothing could derail it last night.

Seriously, I'd rank last night's promo from Punk up there with the greatest promos of all time in this business. That's how amazing it was.

Dude, I noticed that last night too. I noticed a slight Boston accent during the beginning of the segment, but it got heavier and heavier all night. Once Raw went off the air he basically went full blown Bahstahn accent.

Regardless of the quality of the segment...

The fact that the crowd was hot at the start yelling "CM PUNK!" And then got a "We Want Ice Cream" chant going IN FUCKING BOSTON...and they were completely mixed on Cena does not bode well for Czena this Sunday.

I think it also kind of shows the direction that the company might be heading toward. Cena fought the opening match. The opening.fucking.match. When was the last time that happened?

He was also in the closing (which was the main) segment, so that doesn't say a lot IMO. And the dark main event.
