People don't forget that, it's key to his psychology. To not realize that is to never have watched a Batman episode. It's part of what makes him such a great hero...he's only removed from his enemies because of his sense of justice. It's embraced many times during the Batman saga. Batman questions his sanity at so many junctions and almost becomes that which he fears all the time. You read Batman for that.

If you want a well-adjusted hero, go read Superman and be bored. I know I'm eternally bored by that jackass.
