Ty Burna's All Hip Hop Thread

Huge hip-hop fan and thought I'd finally give this place a visit. I'm primarily an old school head despite my age and most of what I listen to comes from the late 80s and most of the 90s. My favorite group is Geto Boys. Does anyone else listen to them? Most definitely the defining gangsta rap group.

Good shit but you can't leave out willie d's controversy album to me that's the best album made by any geto boy yell

Currently listening to this song, it is the first time. It's actually not bad. Muh better than the original IMO. Akon added a smoother side to it rather than just having it going dirty. Should have a listen.

Tomorrow marks the official release of the album of the year thus far, "Goblin" from Tyler, The Creator. Dude is a straight beast. Lyrically he is one of the best rappers to come along in a while. He is part of the group OFWGKTA and Goblin is his solo album. This isn't traditional hip hop so it may not be for everyone but if you listen to the album from start to finish I don't see how you couldn't be impressed.

It's really hard to describe his style. Some have said it's Horrorcore but that's not what it is. You really just have to listen to him to get a feel for it. Here's a couple songs from the album for those that want a preview.

Sorry to inform you but Tyler ain't S.H.I.T. So many up and coming rappers better then him. Best albun of the year? Really? no Really?
So this album is better then..

LASERS by Lupe Fiasco
Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang by Raekwon
Gunz n' Butta by Cam'ron and Vado
Money Muzik by Mack 10 and Glasses Malone

Yeah....Didn't think so. You want good upcoming rapper J. Cole is what to look at

Yes really. I didn't say he was the BEST young rapper in the game, just that he was very good and this album was tremendous.

So this album is better then..
LASERS by Lupe Fiasco

Easily. I love Lupe but Lasers wasn't that great.

Shaolin vs. Wu-Tang by Raekwon

This was a great album but I thought Goblin was slightly better. Shaolin vs Wu-Tang was a little collabo heavy.

Gunz n' Butta by Cam'ron and Vado

Very average.

Money Muzik by Mack 10 and Glasses Malone

Solid album but nothing mind blowing

You want good upcoming rapper J. Cole is what to look at

I really like J Cole. He, however, has not put out an album yet this year. Tyler the Creator has and thus far it is the album of the year.

Honestly these groups of rappers like Odd Future and OFWGKTA piss me off. They cant make a name for themseleves so they try to make an internet sucess story. What happened to the SLim the Mobster and J. Cole storys? Shopping demos to Dr. Dre and Jay-Z respectfully.

Honestly Tyler isn't THAT bad as a solo artist but he doesn't have a hustle in the game. Another point would be in "Yonkers" the beat is the good part but he does have the voice to go with it.

If you take out the pop shit in LASERS then its a great album with songs like "Never Forget You", "All Black Everything", "Sterio Sun", "Words I Never Said" and "The Show Goes On"

Money Muzik and Gunz & Butta both had good to great lyrics and just awesome beats.

Lets try something imma name a bunch of dope up and coming rappers and where would you put Tyler.

Heres who I think is better then Tyler:
Lil B - Dope beats and his lyrics AIN"T SHIT but he has really good chill out music.
YelaWolf - Dope lyrics, great flow, signed with Eminem, has a knack for good beats
Big K.R.I.T. - Do I really need to say anything about him?
Jay Rock - Dopest new rapper after J. Cole
J. Cole - Nas meets Eminem
Schoolboy Q - Next great West Coast artist
Ab-Soul - Decent but better then Tyler
Machine Gun Kelly - Gonna be the next big thing. Listen to "Cleveland"
CyHi da Prynce - Gonna be a star after Big Seans album drops
Big Sean - Hes gonna have the album of the year so far when his shit drops
Nipsey Hussle - really lagging it with the album but beyond Dope

The fuck are you talking about? There's different kinds of hustle. Especially in this technology age you don't have to just go shop demos to big names. Odd Future has had 13 free releases on their website to try and get their name and music out there. Any success they've had is a direct result of their hard work.

Honestly Tyler isn't THAT bad as a solo artist but he doesn't have a hustle in the game. Another point would be in "Yonkers" the beat is the good part but he does have the voice to go with it.

More bullshit.

Lasers was straight up average. A few good songs doesn't make an album great.

Money Muzik and Gunz & Butta both had good to great lyrics and just awesome beats.

Again it was solid but not as good as Goblin.

I'll put Tyler over all those guys minus J Cole and possibly Jay Rock (I want to hear his debut album first). I love Big Sean as I'm a Detroit guy but he isn't at Tyler's level lyrically. Yelawolf is another guy I really like but again I wouldn't put him over Tyler.

Good list, may listen to the artists on this song I dont know.

Sorry im just a guy that respects old school hustle.

Now that i've listened to Tyler more I like him butttt my problem with him besides the ones I havent mentioned are in case you cant tell he is horrercore rap and alot of his lyrics I just feel are like Eminem lyrics recycled from SSLP, MMLP and just put under his voice and beats and changed up.

J. Cole explained this good once. All rappers are like cooks. When building their flow and such they take this and that from other rappers and mix it together to make a good flow/style. The best rappers are the ones where you cant hear too much of one rapper in their songs (metaphor for too much _____ on the food). I hear too much Eminem horrercore influence on his raps and don't know how he could get to the mainstream.

I know we "hate" mainstream rappers like "La lalala Lollipop" that kinda shit but every dope rapper needs that mainstream effect. That little song on the radio that gets them album buys. Lupe Fiasco has had one on all his albums. Eminem had "My Name is.." on SSLP even though the rest of the album is different then that one song. I don't see that mainstream pull by Tyler's songs. When I say mainstream I just mean a song on the radio not selling out like some of these rappers do *cough* Jay-Z *cough*

He is not horrorcore, that is a common misconception. Horrorcore is using the horror style of lyrics and just putting them on song after song. With Tyler and Odd Future they may have some of those elements in the lyrics but they use it to tell a story. Every song and album tells a story from start to finish. It may be a horror type of story they are often telling but it's not horrorcore.

As far as the old school Em comparison the similarities are there but they are two different artists. He also doesn't recycle much of anything. He has very original lyrics. Tell me this isn't completely original, not too mention dope as fuck. "Green paper, gold teeth and pregnant gold retrievers
All I want, fuck money, diamonds and bitches, don't need 'em"

Yonkers was a very well liked single and the song "She," which is going to be the third single released has some potential as well in the mainstream. Goblin did about 50,000 in album sales its first week which is very solid for a young artists debut album.

Im not hating on him. i really feel like hes made a great cult following and had some great album sales based on our economy right now.

Well this was very fun wanna discuss anymore various topics when it comes to hip hop? Artists, Albums, General things, anything

Well this was very fun wanna discuss anymore various topics when it comes to hip hop? Artists, Albums, General things, anything

I'm curious as to who you have as the greatest rappers of all time and what some of your favorite albums are. With some of what you posted I think our tastes in hip hop aren't all that different.

As my luck I had this long responce writen out so i'll shorten it cause i dont want to write it again.

Well I feel the three best rappers off all time are Tupac, Eminem and Nas. Three most lyrical and storytelling MCs of all time. I can listen to nearly any Tupac or Eminem song and listen to it all the way through and love it. Nas is just beyond lyrical when it comes to anything I even like his Untitled album and Hip Hop Is Dead is actully one of my favorite albums by him.

Alot of people would be like why didn't you put Biggie in there? Well I believe Biggie was very lyrical and I do like him but he didn't have that life long struggle in his rhymes as Eminem, Tupac, Nas have/had. I also felt too many of his songs were garnering toward the radio when there needs to be the underground realness sound more often then not.

If I was to round out a top 5 I would also throw The Game and Dr. Dre in there. They have both been all time favorites of mind and I will definitly but The R.E.D. Album and Detox when they come out. Being from the West Coast I defintly bang the west coast type of music.

Honerable mentions would be Chamillionaire, Kanye West and Kid Cudi
Chamillionaire - Just overal dope rapper. One of the best rappers to combine harmonized vocals and rapping together
Kanye West - Just a genious on the mike and behind the boards. His album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy is a work of art and one of my favorite albums
Kid Cudi - Just the type of music I like to chill and listen to. Hes like Wiz Khalifa and Lil B to me just a rapper whos music I can just lay down chill and sing along to but not too pop.

Greatest of All Time, All yeah you just fed the beast but here's who I would have to say

Old-School/Golden Age:
Melle Mel,
KRS-One
Rakim
Run-DMC
(That's all I got; As old school I can go back is to the 90s)

90s:
Notorious B.I.G.
2Pac
Ice Cube

Late Nineties-Mid 2000s-Present:
Jay-Z
Eminem
Nas

Mainstream/New Era:
No one I mean no one, this is the era in which everyone is dying

Underground/New Era:
J-Cole
Jay Electronica
Lupe Fiasco
Wale
Yelawolf
Wiz Khalifa ( a bit before he went mainstream)
Tyler the Creator
(^If these artists go mainstream I see an official New HIP-HOP era! :))

We aren't so different at all. Eminem and Pac are easily my top 2 rappers ever. I go back and forth between Biggie and Nas at 3 so our top three are nearly identical. I round out the top 5 with Rakim, giving some homage to the old school.

As far as your newer tastes that's where we differ somewhat. I really like Chamillionaire but wouldn't consider him a favorite. With Kanye his first two albums were great, especially the College Dropout, but since then I haven't really liked too much he put out. Graduation was solid I guess. With Cudi I like him for what he is but again wouldn't consider him a favorite. I do love Game though. He has fallen off a bit lately but I'm still a fan.

Some of the other guys I'm huge fans of are guys like Run DMC, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, NWA, and KRS One from the old school. Wu Tang, Ma$e, DMX, and Busta Rhymes from the 90's, early 2000's. Nowadays I'm a big fan of Slaughterhouse and Cassidy. Of course I also am partial to all the Detroit guys being from around the area. Royce Da 5'9, Proof and the rest of D12, Elzhi, Black Milk, etc... I'm sure I'm missing a lot of guys on these lists but it's just an overview.

If you stay up to date like I do with Hip Hop blogs you would catch alot of leaked matereal that doesn't get to the masses.

If you listen to Purp & Patron or any of The Game's recent leaks you'll get what I mean haha. Chamillionaire has defently been dropping some fire recently with his "Playlist Poison" series.

We both have that feel for the sound of the area we live in like you with Detroit and me with LA. Its the sound we've grown up listening to so we can listen to most music from that area and love it.

With Kanye. I really do not like Graduation but I believe MBDTF is some wonderfully made album. "Dark Fantasy", "Blame Game" "Gorgous" desevre a listen.

I also enjoy listening to D12, KRS-One, Rakim, NWA, Wu-Tang, Ma$e, DMX and Busta Rhymes.

By the way i bought Goblin haha:lmao:

just like every year they have the WZ Tournament we should just do a one year thing for this year only where we do a WZ Tournament for Hip-Hop/Rap To see whos truly the Greatest MC of All Time and it can be run by Ty Burna.

There has been talk of doing something like that before but there are always tons of tournaments going on and hip hop usually ends of taking a back seat. I'm always down for debating in here about which rapper is better between a group of emcees.

Unfortunately we just had a tournament in the music section, and we're going to be overlooked as far as hip hop goes for some time. There are a ton of tournaments on the calender that we would unlikely get a spot any time soon. Biggest problem is that while there are a number of hardcore hip hop fans on the forums, there isn't a mass appeal like there would be with a general rock tournament. That being said don't take that as I'll never try to get one going, just that it's not going to happen any time soon.

That all being said, an idea I have is I can set up a weekly battle if you will. Throw two artists out there and let everyone debate on who is better for a week and see what we can drum up. I have had a few ideas for the hip hop thread floating around, it's just a matter of having the time to put them together. Would any of y'all be interested in taking part in a weekly debate such as that? I would try to avoid the obvious debates such as 2pac/Biggie because we've been there before. Some weeks could be old school against new school, southern artist vs. east coast, just whatever can come to mind. I'm always open to suggestions on what we can do for the thread. It's been stagnant unfortunately and I'd like to revive it.

I'd definitely be down for something like that. I agree that we should avoid the obvious battles and go for something a little more out of the box. Maybe some old school vs new school type thing. LL Cool J vs Jay Z, Rakim vs Nas, Big Daddy Kane vs Ludacris, something like that.

Alright it's time gentlemen. I've come up with the two artists I want this first battle to include:

Method Man

vs.

DMX

We're gonna throw some heavy hitters in there out of the gate. In all honesty I would love to see these two throw down in a legit battle rap. It's also an interesting contrast in styles. On one hand you have X with his ruggedness and aggressive lyrics, and on the other you have Method Man with his gravely voice and yet somehow silky smooth flow. Both men can take control of a track and make you pay attention to what they're saying.

Taking a look at each artist individually, DMX really had that rare breakout as a "rookie" sensation with It's Dark and Hell is Hot and Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of my Blood. He tore it up when he came out, I still remember Ruff Ryders Anthem being on the top of MTV Jams Top 10 for fucking ever. Just looking at his initial success, his first two albums debuted on the top of the Billboard charts, in the same year. Really to me, X was a breath of fresh air because after Pac and Biggie died, no one really wanted to go with the aggressive style. However, X has had major personal issues and hasn't quite reached the top spot like he did in years past. Regardless, his first 5 albums all reached the top of the Billboard charts, his 6th album climbing as high as 2nd. As far as skills go, X is fantastic at wordplay and his lyrics are slightly underrated in my opinion. He's an artist that really gets you hyped up, and at the same time can drop a slow down track to make you contemplate things. I'd really like to see what would have been if X didn't run into all the legal issues. I think he could be considered a hip hop legend at some point.

Flip side of the coin, Method was the first star out of the Wu Tang Clan. While his solo commercial success doesn't rival DMX's, he's released some outstanding albums (as long as RZA is producing them). Lyrically Method Man is a monster, there's no question about it. His flow is easily one of the best I've heard in the hip hop game. Looking at Method's collection of tracks, he's quite diverse in his selections. You have your typical weed songs, your humorous songs alongside Redman, but then he can switch and cut a killer Wu Tang style track, go hard with songs like Judgement Day above, not to mention a song like All I Need with Mary J Blige. Method certainly has his share of classic tracks, but he will certainly be remembered more for his work with Wu Tang Clan and his weed habit. I don't think that's fair, Method Man easily holds it down on his own, and there's a reason why RZA chose him to be the first solo star out of Wu Tang Clan.

So that all being said, who do you feel is the better artist here? Do you like X's aggressive nature or do you prefer Method's laid back and smooth style? I open the floor to y'all, I'll withhold my thoughts until the end.

I have to go with Method Man here. Why? One word: Consistency.

I was a HUGE DMX fan when I was a teenager. His album ...And Then There Was X was one of my all time favorites. I also loved his songs Ruff Ryders' Anthem and Lord Give Me a Sign. However... that's about it. The guy hasn't released anything decent in years, and most of his albums ended up being incredibly disappointing. The guy had some cool beats and good rhythm to his flow, but most of it just doesn't stand the test of time. With DMX there's a nostalgia feeling there, but with the blinders off... he really wasn't that good. His lyrics were mediocre at best on 90% of the stuff he released. Plus that voice of his can get old quick.

Method Man, on the other hand... incredible, original lyricist who always delivered the goods whenever he's on a record. To be completely honest, I've always preferred Redman over him, but that doesn't take anything away from Method Man. Blackout! is one of my favorite albums of all time. Not was, IS. Everything he and Redman did together musically was gold, in my eyes. I also really dug Method Man's Tical albums as well. Plus, his Wu-Tang contributions go without mentioning.

So, yeah... if you had asked me at 15 who was better, I would have undoubtedly gone with DMX, but now that I'm older and wiser... the answer to this question is Method Man, and to be honest... it's not even close in my eyes. Method Man has always been great, while DMX had a short lived window that barely even stands the test of time. DMX, in my opinion, is a perfect example of "flash in the pan" hip-hop artist.

I'll give it a shot..

I went with DMX. I think DMX has something a lot of rappers really don't comprehend:

Sincerity

Maybe it is because I have ovaries (woman joke lol), but I think DMX's songs have something to them that makes you feel what the song is about. The songs about whooping some ass are so infectious that you might really want to just slap the shit out of someone by listening to it. On the flip side, some of his songs just extrudes such a raw emotion about them. Like you feel whatever he is going through.

Sure, the guy is like batshit crazy last I checked, but there's such an intense passion to him. I think that should count more than just a bunch of random lyrics. Not to take anything from Method Man, but he just came across as a run of a mill rapper who had some success. DMX is one of those guys that really could've been big, but like I said.. The guy has a ton of problems.

I have to go with Meth. The guy just does it every single time for me. His freestyle abilities, his Wu-tang verses, his albums with Redman, and His solo records are always on point. Combine all of that with his charisma and you have a top 5 talent. This is not taking anything away from the dogman but Meth is just on another planet

I love both artists. As a pure rhymer this goes to Method Man no question because I believe he is a little more diverse with what he can do flow wise. However, as an overall artist when it comes to flow, great songs, and just entertainment value as a whole I have to go with DMX.

DMX has obviously fallen off recently because of the troubles he has faced in his personal life but I find more DMX songs that I still listen to vs songs from Meth. Method Man and Redman as a combo I fucking love but this is obviously solo that we are talking about and if it came down to a one on one battle with both at their best, I'd have to go with DMX.
