Ty Burna's All Hip Hop Thread

So I know that we usually discuss what music we like here and why mainstream hip hop sucks etc. etc. and that 50 Cent is usually not that well received around here by most, but I must give major props to him. He recently registered with the DKMS to be a bone marrow donor after hearing about the child actress that was in the Broadway version of Lion King needing a bone marrow donor to fight Leukemia. Now clearly he didn't do this until someone a bit famous came down with the disease, but you know what the spirit of it all is what's important. Tony Yayo also registered as a donor as well.

From what I've read, it's hard to find donors for African Americans and those of Dominican descent because so few register as donors. I know myself I've registered as an organ donor and would have no problem registering as a bone marrow donor as well if need be. Hopefully with 50 and Yayo stepping up and registering themselves will inspire more people to register as donors as well. So major props to you 50 Cent and you as well Tony Yayo.

Yo Ty, i been meaning to ask you what the best Bone Thug solo efforts are. More specifically Layzie Bone since he's always been my favorite of the group.

On another note when is Wiz Khalifa's next mixtape coming out I'm still banging all his shit but it could never hurt to have something new.

Been meaning to get back to you on this myself, it's been a busy week with WZCW. Anyways anything by Krayzie is solid gold, most notably Thug Mentality 1999, Gemini: Good vs Evil, and any of his fixtape albums. Good stuff from beginning to end.

As far as Layzie Bone goes, his first album as L-Burna called "Thug By Nature" is a hip hop classic in my opinion. Top notch tracks across the board. Following that was another great album "It's Not A Game". After that it's a grab bag, some albums have a decent amount of good tracks, others are pretty bland. I will say his duo album with Bizzy Bone called Bone Brothers was a dope album. Also his duo album with Young Noble called Thug Brothers is another one you should check out.

Bizzy's had a couple good albums. Heaven'z Movie is easily one of the best Bone solo albums, and one I highly recommend. Alpha & Omega was a good album, but with Bizzy it really depends where his mind is at the time. A lot of albums were absolute shit and Bizzy rapping incoherently over horrible beats, where as you have some where he's more focused like The Gift, Midwest Cowboy, and A Song For You.

I hope that gives ya an idea what kind of solo albums to look for as far as Bone members are concerned.

On another note when is Wiz Khalifa's next mixtape coming out I'm still banging all his shit but it could never hurt to have something new.

Wiz is alright, I guess I just don't feel his music as much as other do. Honestly right now I don't know what I'm looking forward to as far as hip hop is concerned, I seem to have gone through all the albums I've been expecting as of right now. Maybe one other album this year that I'm aware of is Bone said they got a ton of tracks they've recorded for their last album, so they'll be compiling a bunch of them for another album later this year. I won't hold my breath on it though because I heard the same thing for Strenght & Loyalty and that never materialized, and Uni5 I think got pushed back damn near two years from when it was first announced.

Theres supposed to be a couple of wu solo albums coming out this year. Liquid Swords 2 and The Crystal Meth are both scheduled for the fall. Liquid Swords 2 is going to be produced in whole by the RZA and he's produced 6 undeniable classic albums all by himself so lets hope things go well on this one. Also Kanye's coming out with a new album but after 808's idk if im fucking with him Theres going to be a Nas album and an Andre 3000 solo effort. Hopefully none of these disappoint me.

Can anyone give me some info on Eazy-E? I know about his tragic death, some of the NWA stuff, and the beef with Dr.Dre, but I'm just wondering was he good? Is he considered a legend? I've never heard too much of his material, and I've always been curious about him.

E was awesome back when he first started, but he slowly got worse with time honestly, it's strange, in a way he's both under and overrated, because while he isn't anywhere on the level of his peers like Cube, Dre, or even MC Ren (who was fucking SICK) he does still have alot of good g-funk with great productions. Here's a few of my favorite Eazy E songs:

He wasn't a very gifted lyricist technically speaking, but E was always fun to listen to especially with a great beat like he often had with him.

Lyrically wise Eazy E wasn't that great. In fact Ice Cube and MC Ren wrote the majority of his lyrics. He's a lot like Dr Dre in that since. But as a performer he was definitely very good. He had great delivery and even once Ice Cube left NWA he was still able to put out some good stuff. One of my favorite rap songs is actually an Eazy E song.

After much thought about posting here or just making a spam thread I decided to post here. Mainly because I wanna know what you guys think of my friend and so guests who like hip hop also see her.

Anyway, this is my best friend Tara:

She came to visit me a few months back and I recorded this video from my phone. There's something messed up with my SD card so I had to upload load straight from my phone. If anyone knows how to rotate it, that'd be rad. She lives in Michigan so I can't refilm any time soon.

So, yeah, I wanna know what you guys think of her and maybe spread the word. Here's the link, so give it some views too if you can. I don't know if posting the video gets views.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWApeNlgjJo

Me and her both write poetry, pretty deep too, but as you can tell her rapping style is that mainstream type that I know some people don't like. I'm into Kanye West, Tupac, and Eminem if you wanted to know. I used to be big on Weezy, but all his shit started to sound the same. Plus, if anyone has seen the Carter Documentary, he got mad when someone asked if he wrote poetry and he got offended saying he was a "rapper." Later on, though, he says he's an "entertainer" and basically a jack of all trades. That contradiction and the fact that one of the best ever, Tupac, wrote poetry pisses me off.

Back on topic, though, I would love to hear opinions and suggestions to get her name out. She is getting gigs. Also, she's 4'9 if you're wondering, so I think her height is definately a good gimmick to have since basically Nicki Minaj is running the female rap game, so I think it definately sets her apart. I would like to see her rap more like MC Lyte(and I'm talking about lyrical content and subject matter) to really set herself apart, but she's more into that mainstream style like I said. One last thing, her friend sings the chorus so that's why there really isn't one in the video, but it's bascially just the line "we are the illest" to the melody.

It's been awhile since the hip hop thread was posted in last, let's reverse that trend starting now.

Topic of discussion today is as follows. Recently I've been reading articles and interviews that Tech N9ne's been getting some love from the mainstream artists. Unfortunately he's getting love from the mainstream artists that a majority of Tech N9ne fans hate. According to what I've been reading, Tech's gotten word that Lil Wayne wants to work with him and that Tech's business manager has been in contact with Wayne's people. This has touched off a bit of debate between Tech fans, with good reason.

Now typically this wouldn't be such a big deal, it'd be a song I'd likely just skip if it were on one of his albums and would never speak of it. However my major problem with the whole situation is that many Tech fans have spoken out and contacted Tech to say they don't want him to do any music with Wayne. But Tech has said that he doesn't care about that and to me it seems like he's more interested in breaking into the mainstream rather than listening to what the fans say. This disturbs me greatly as Tech has always been about his fan base and has never done anything to really alienate those that have supported him over the years. But now that he's getting some attention from the "big" names in hip hop such as 50 Cent and Wayne, it's almost as if he's selling out. Now I'm hoping that's not the case but the way he's responded to fans saying to not make music with Wayne or 50 is a bit unexpected. I realize it's just a couple songs but all this love he's getting is getting to his head and he's lashed back at the core fans who have backed him for so long. Tech's gotta realize that his fans are more along the line of hardcore hip hop fans who don't care for the mainstream, and he could jeopardize losing those fans in favor of short term success on a more national level.

My biggest worry again is Tech alienating fans by basically saying fuck off to those that don't want him to work with those artists, but at the same time I'm also worried about Tech getting used by these artists for short term gain. It's great that Tech is finally getting some recognition in the mainstream hip hop, but at the same time I feel like it's more artists wanting to claim they "discovered" Tech N9ne first and brought him up, which is completely fucked up and not the way most N9ne fans wanted him to reach that level of success. I feel the man had the skills on his own to make that leap from the top independent artist to a mainstream success rather than having to ride on someone's coattails.

So I pose the following questions to you guys. Should Tech take his fans' input as far working with specific artists into consideration or should he go and work with whoever he wants? By speaking the way he has about those fans that object to him working with Wayne, is it entirely possible he could lose a large portion of his fan base? Should he focus on reaching mainstream success by working with artists like 50 Cent and Lil Wayne, is it the right way to reach the top or should he just continue to work hard at what he does now?

Great way to get conversation started Ty, for sure, but you know how I feel about Tech, so I'm not even going to touch on this topic as it really wouldn't be right, I'd probably just end up dogging him.

I do however, want to bring to the attention of this thread Black Milk's new album, Album of the Year. Silly title aside, it really is a fantastic album and one of the best hip-hop albums I've heard in 2010 for sure. Not sure how familiar some of you are with Black Milk, but check some of his shit out, you will not be disappointed.

Doesn't seem like it is, oh well I tried. Maybe tomorrow will bring better success. I know your opinion of him and I appreciate you avoiding it. But let's get to your other part.

Black Milk is dope as a producer. His beats are off the fucking charts and he's not too shabby as a rapper either. I've read high reviews for this album and I'm planning on getting it downloaded here very shortly. From the songs I've heard of the album it's top notch. He's come a long way as far as his rhymes and general mic skills are concerned and I think he's one of those guys who's going to keep working at it until he reaches his max potential. That's what I really like about him, his beats continue to get better and better, and if his rapping could reach the level of his beats, holy shit.

Furthering on that trend, I found a new artist a couple days ago named Q-Unique. He's a member of the Arsonists over on the East Coast, and I won't pretend like I know all about the Arsonists or anything, I'm sure you could clue me in more X, but from what I've heard from Q-Unique's new album Between Heaven and Hell, I'm digging it. He's got an unmistakable East Coast style, but he's got some gritty and dark stories to tell and as you all know I love the storytelling hip hop. I haven't given the whole album a spin yet, so a proper album review will be coming soon. Just to give you a sample:

Black Milk is the fucking man. Another underrated guy coming out of Detroit. Definitely a better producer then rapper but he's still very good as an emcee. He's at his best when he's together with guys like Royce and Elzhi on a track. This is one my favorite songs with him and Royce:

Very recently I discovered a rap duo called the Doppelgangaz, and they are fucking sick. For the longest time I figured they were some forgotten group from the 90's. I was pleasently suprised to find out that this group is still around today. As far as I can tell, they've only released two albums, The Ghastly Duo (2008) and 2012: The New Begining (2009).

The duo consists of Matter ov Fact, and EP. If you enjoy the old east coast grimy sound, then you'll most likely enjoy the Doppelgangaz, check it out.

Yeah, i've been keeping up with the whole Tech N9ne shit. I don't like it too much myself, but I don't wanna dog him completely just for working with Wayne. Not EVERY Wayne song he makes is garbage. I just started listening to this dude named Yelawolf? Anyone heard his shit? It's this white/native american mixed dude from Alabama. He fucking kills it! He just did this freestyle to Ross's Blowin' Money Fast, and I love it. There's a few good songs of his out. His debut album drops in October. I'm listening to this song right now called "Kickin." The bass is insane. I wish I had a good system to play it on.

About the whole tech situation, I'm not really a fan of his. However his fans might not want him to work with Wayne but have you ever stopped for a second to think that tech maybe liked Wayne's music? There are still a lot of people who think Wayne is a really good rapper. In fact i dont see whats so bad about him, yea i know auto tune sucks but every artist does something in their career that sucks. No ceilings was Wayne's best work in quite some time and Tech himself might have liked it and thought it was getting back to the Wayne from 04-07. I'm not saying it is right for Tech to say fuck his fans but how do they have the right to tell him who he can and cant work with.

I think it's more or less, fans don't want Tech to go mainstream and start making that auto-tuned bubblegum rap bullshit. Lil Wayne's got some fight in him, that auto-tune about knocked his ass out of the game, but he's still got it. I fell in love with that "I Am Not a Human Being" shit. It goes fucking hard. Reminds me of the old Wayne I used to bump. Tech said he was shocked that a guy on Lil Wayne's level, knew who he was, and even wanted to work with him. I wouldn't really care forreal, if Tech went mainstream, as long as he kept spitting that killer shit. Here's the Wayne song I was talking about though..

I dont know how familiar you guys are with porn actress pinkyxxx but she does rap also. I heard her mixtape a few months back but just never bought it into the forum. I can honestly say that she is better than a lot of the top artists today (Gucci, Waka, Jeezy). Will anyone ever take her seriously though because of her being a porn star?

OKay theres still a few rappers out there that arn't too mainstream that kill it

Bun B - His new album is fire "Put It Down", "Trillionaire", "Right Now" and alot of songs on Trill OG

Jay Rock - "All My Life (In The Getto)", "How to Rob '09" and alot of other songs by this underground West Coast artist

Lloyd Banks - "On Fire", "Hands Up", "Any Girl", "Beamer, Benz or Bentely"

Kid Cudi - "Mr. Rager", "Cudi Zone", "Up Up Away", "Sky Might Fall", "Man on the Moon" etc.

Eminem - Too many to name listen to The Slim Shady LP, Marshall Mathers LP and The Eminem Show for his best work

Nas - All time great who still spit fire

DMX - still kills it listen to his verse in "Stop the Party (Remix)" by Busta Rhymes

Fat Joe - I don't like any of his work except his new album. "If it Ain't About Money", "No Problems", "Money Over Bitches" and "At Last Supremacy"

Dr. Dre still spits fire "Old Times Sake" for example. Jay-Z still brings it to the table. Fabolous, Game and J. Cole kill it. "THe Strom" by J. Cole is great.

Alot more great rappers still here you gotta look for them

Just reading through the news here, and I'm saddened to read that Eyedea passed away yesterday morning. If you haven't heard Eyedea, he's a Minneapolis rapper that was a part of Rhymesayers group. He was a real dope battle rapper and alongside DJ Abilities made a pretty awesome duo.

Some of his accolades include winning the battle rap competition Blaze Battle that was featured on HBO back in 2000 and also winning the competition Scribble Jam. Personally for me I really enjoyed his lyricism and storytelling, he had an almost poetic nature to his rhymes and were often deep thinking philosophical in nature. He was only 28 years old at the time of his death. THe Midwest hip hop scene will miss you man. RIP Eyedea.

AZ is coming out with a 15th anniversary addition of his classic album Doe or Die. As hip hop fans do you have any albums that you would like to see re-released? if so which ones and why are they special to you

Also Joe Budden's new Mixtape dropped recently I have not had the pleasure of listening to it yet. Does any one have an opinion on it for me. I think joe is one of the best rappers out right now but he does not get the credit that he deserves.

Hell yeah, lol yeah I lisiten to lil wayne. Lol metal head, Icp fan, and now a Lil Wayne fan? Yeah i know what people say stick with one type. I fucking love Weezy. Thats it, honestly if i seen a weezy cd cheeper than the metal album I had, I'd snatch that shit up.

I really love this song, its really hitting me on the head for some reason. His flow is fucking sick. Its completely disgusting how weezy can shit on all other rappers right now. Sure alot of them are putting out good shit. But honestly 9/10 of the songs are fucking genius. You can't replicate the tallent Wayne has. Its just raw shit that's going to be putting him in big bucks for years to come.:worship:

A fair while ago, I posted a link to the song CD is Dead. Well, JME's album came out about a month and a half ago and is absolutely incredible, to the point where I'm not bored of it yet. Grime (the closest thing there is to English rap I'd say) isn't something I've seen around much on here, I'd guess due to it being a primarily US forum, but I'm curious as to whether others would have as high an opinion as I do of this album.

In my opinion he's pretty much the top of the genre at the moment, still haven't heard a bad song by him. What do you guys think?

I love Immortal Technique. The dude has such an incredible flow. The passion he puts into his songs. You can feel it, like.. he goes hard in every song. There's a hidden track on "The 3rd World" on the Crimes of the Heart track. Check this shit out, this is hip-hop. The whole album is off the chain. Talking about subject matter such as religion, politics, war, poverty, corruption, life in jail. Everything, he covers it. Great shit.

I'm just going to ignore the fact I just saw a Lil Wayne video in my hip hop thread for now and move on to something I've wanted to work on for awhile now. Last year we just did an album of the year discussion, but I'm going to go a bit deeper with this and share with y'all my favorites of the year. Now this is not based on anything other than my own personal opinion, so you won't see Kanye, Lil Wayne, or Eminem in my list of nominees for album of the year etc. By all means if you want to use this as a template to share your thoughts on the year in hip hop, go for it.

Here's my list, winner in bold if there are multiple nominees.

Breakthrough of the Year: Black Milk

I've known of Black Milk for a few years now, and I've always known him to be one of the best producers out there. Never did I expect him to up his rhyme game to where it's at now on top of his production, but that's exactly what happened when he released "Album of the Year". It's great to see him expand his abilities and really bring an album that may just be worthy of its title.

Song of the Year:
Kno - "They Told Me"
Krayzie Bone - "Scrap the Block"
Eligh - "The Love of My Life"
Atmosphere - "Freefallin"

I went with Krayzie's track Scrap the Block off his Fixtape Vol. 3. This is off the top of the dome so I may be missing a song that would be better here, but at the moment this is what I got. Loved this track from start to finish, it showed off Kray's lethal flow and his harmonizing as well. It never gets skipped on the playlist so I'm gonna give it Song of the Year.

Mixtape of the Year:
Bone Thugs-n-Harmony - "Special Delivery"
Krayzie Bone - "Fixtape Vol. 3"

This was skewed, I'm not gonna lie. I didn't listen to any other mixtapes except for these two, and Krayzie's solo one was better than Bone's group one.

Album of the Year:
Kno - "Death is Silent"
Eligh - "The Grey Crow"
Atmosphere - "To All My Friends"
7L and Esoteric - "1212"
Method Man, Ghostface Killiah, Raekwon - "Wu-Massacre"
Celph-Titled and Buckwild: Nineteen Ninety Now

Kno's album just barely beat out Eligh's album here. Ever since they've been released, both have been staples in my music collection, but I'm going to give it to Kno simply because his album was killer from start to finish. Eligh definitely gained a new fan with his work on "The Grey Crow" so this really could have gone either way. In any case I recommend all of the above albums if you haven't got them already. Props to Kno for the production work and rhymes on the album.

Mainstream album I liked: Big Boi - "Sir Lucious Left Foot"

Just so I don't give every award to underground artists.

Sad Moment of the Year:
Guru and Eyedea both passing away too soon.

I really wish I didn't have to put anything here, but it's a must that we recognize two greats that left us this year. Guru passed away earlier this year after a long battle with cancer among other health ailments. He created the much acclaimed Jazzmatazz series, and of course a founding member of the influential group Gang Starr alongside DJ Premier. As for Eyedea, he was a battle rap legend and a huge presence in the independent hip hop scene in Minneapolis. Eyedea was known as a very skilled lyricist with vivid rhymes. He passed away due to an opiate toxicity.

Both were influential in hip hop in their own way, and both were taken from us far too early. But their music will live on forever and I hope we keep the spirit of their work going. RIP Guru and Eyedea.

Out of Left Field
B.o.B
Freddie Gibbs

Holy shit, Freddie Gibbs where did you come from? This dude is fire on the mic and literally no one was prepared for him showing up and dropping a fantastic album with an old school feel to it. I chose him over B.o.B because he did it on some old gangsta shit rather than making it on the pop charts. Props to both but Freddie Gibbs dropped absolute fire and it came out of nowhere.

Favorite Discovery of the Year:
Kno
Eligh
The Grouch
PackFM
Celph-Titled
The Foreign Exchange

While Kno and Eligh have been getting a lot of talk from me this thread, I want to talk about Eligh's Living Legends brother The Grouch for a moment. The man does not use any gimmick, his flow is solid, and I really dig the positivity in his rhymes. Conscious Rap has really become a flavor of hip hop that I've come to enjoy big time, and it's something that needs to gain more attention. Grouch has a distinctive voice and top notch rhymes. I expect more great things from him in the very near future.

Producer of the Year:
Kno
Black Milk
Buckwild

This is close, closer than it honestly should be but I digress. While both Kno and Black Milk brought some absolute quality productions on both of their solo albums, I'm giving this to Buckwild, and the only reason why is because he brought his beats from the 90's out and gave an underground rapper a crack at using them, and man it did not disappoint. Classic beats with a fresh perspective, there's nothing better.

Collaboration of the Year:
Celph-Titled and Buckwild
The Foreign Exchange
Slug and Murs also known as Felt

The Foreign Exchange is a collaboration effort between Phonte of Little Brother fame and Nicolay, a dope producer from the Netherlands. They were nominated for a Grammy a few years back, but I don't think anyone would honestly remember. That being said their collaboration on Authenticity was so dope, between Phonte's rapping and singing intermingling with Nicolay's production, it created a perfect blend of hip hop, jazz, soul, and R&B that it needs recognition.

I'm sure y'all can do some other categories if you want, that's what I thought up here this evening and if I have more I'll add to it. Overall I was disappointed at the beginning of the year by Bone's Uni5 album, and I don't think I ever really got on track until the end of the year. As I've said in the past I just wasn't feeling anything and nothing was gaining my attention. Then the end of the year came and holy shit the underground/independent hip hop really got be back into it once more. I got plenty of new artists now that I'll be looking forward to. I won't comment on the mainstream hip hop because I'll just get real negative then.

Looking ahead to 2011:
Lupe's Lazers finally drops
Hopefully some new material from Bone
Detox? Maybe? Is it possible?
New Atmosphere album hopefully
Living Legends members releasing more outstanding albums

Your thoughts gentlemen/ladies?

Breakthrough of the Year: Black Milk

I agree with you completely on this. I've followed his career for a long time being he is from the Detorit area and I knew that once his rhyming caught up to his production he would turn a lot of heads.

Song of the Year: Session One- Eminem and Slaughterhouse

This was a bonus song off of Recovery and everyone went hard. Em, Royce, Joell, and Crooked all had great verses. The Beamer, Benz, or Bentley mega mix with Royce, Crooked, Budden, and Joell is also right up there.

Mixtape of the Year: Bar Exam 3- Royce Da 5'9

Not quite as good as Bar Exam 2 but still ridiculous. A lot of great songs coupled with some very entertaining skits.

Album of the Year: Recovery- Eminem

Most people will disagree here, but at the end of the day Eminem is my favorite rapper and he came out with his best album in 8 years. Not a bad song on the album and showed that he still has the lyrical ability to compete with anyone in the game.

Looking ahead to 2011:

This looks like it will finally be the year for Detox. Dr Dre has already released the track "Kush" featuring Akon and Snoop and released a video for it. Another song, "I Need a Doctor" featuring Eminem has leaked. I'm also looking forward to Slaughterhouse hopefully releasing an album on Shady Records.
