The Bullshiting About Comics Thread w/ Justin & Friends

I'd definitely go for Crisis on Infinite Earths above the other Crises.

Fair enough.

Given the nature of your beliefs Lee, what did you make of the religious aspect of Kingdom Come?

It was one of those I liked it but it didn't bother me if that makes sense. It's something that has been used with Superman for many years so it wasn't even something that was a surprise.

Not read it in a few years, may re-read.

Another site I go to is putting together the Top 50 X-Men stories to commemorate the upcoming 50th anniversary. I had a pretty hard time coming up with my top 10 list.

I'd be interested to read some Marvel novels as I've barely touched any.

Marvel falls more into the superhero mold, where DC is more of the Graphic Novel. If you're into more "serious" story telling, go with MAX or Knights lines that are more adult oriented.

I'm more of an X fan than a marvel fan myself. I absolutely can't stand the Avengers and the marvel initiative of making everyone an Avenger.

Yeah I hate that feel I get from Marvel.

On an unrelated note, if DC are so hellbent on making an Avengers type movie why not go for the JSA?

Ugh, the fact that there are something along the lines of six different Avengers titles (The Avengers, New Avengers, Secret Avengers, Young Avengers, Avengers Academy, Avengers Assemble and so forth) is utterly ridiculous. Its what contributed in a large part to the downfall on the comics industry in the 90's (over exposure) and the badgering of the Avengers is starting to feel like that again.

The one title I'm really loving out of Marvel right now that I'm reading on a regular basis is Captain America from Remender and Romita Jr. The Dimension Z story is pretty bloody refreshing after several years of (very good to excellent) Brubaker, thriller style Cap.

As a big Spidey fan I wish I'd probably suggest investigating the more recent developments with the character(s), but only if you're up to the taks of ingesting a lot of character shifts and changes. Superior has been pretty hit/miss so far.

I think they were gearing up to it pretty quickly to go head-to-head with Avengers 2 upon its release but they'd be cramming a lot in with a minimal amount of time, introudicng a good chunk of the heroes, let alone telling the story of their uniting and the background for the villain. Now they're waiting to see the overall returns on the box office for Man of Steel I believe.

What I hate about Marvel is they feel the need to have a massive crossover event every year, that's typically last about 6 months, & every major books ties into, on top of that they like to charge $3.99 for their more popular titles & then double ship them. I've found myself burned out on most Marvel stuff, Young Avengers & Hawkeye have very different feel from most of Marvel books, which is why I enjoy them. They both feel very refreshing compared to most other Marvel books, same with Indestructible Hulk, though I thin I'm more drawn to that as it's a Hulk book, & Hulk is one of my favorite comic characters.

I've really found myself drawn more toward Image stuff lately. Lots of good stuff coming out of there lately, most of which isn't superhero based.

If you like that stuff I recommend you check out Fear Agent, great stuff.

Have to agree with Lee for a lot of his suggestions, Funkay. Especially Identity Crisis and No Man's Land. But I'm a batman mark.

Hawkeye is a thing of beauty. What a refreshing read.

Marvel are tricky folks to deal with. Outside of them stealing all of your money, their universe seems heavily dependent on cohesion. And on relationships. It's their modus operandi. Think of all the titles they have running around with groups and team-ups. Compared to the lone Spider-Man or Wolverine, theres a tonne more. They like playing their characters off of each other. Most of the time it works a treat, civil war for example blows it out of the water. DC put more focus on the guy themselves and their characters decisions and judgements. The are more likely to change, and bring themselves back to their roots than do it through meeting someone else.

The superhero vibe from Marvel is likely because almost EVERYONE has a power of sorts. Granted, I'm a Batman man, so it always stands out more for me. Bright colours and people with powers are the order of the day. It kind of works well to create a balance though. When everone is equal, it dulls on me. Many of Batmans vilians have no powers, joker, riddler etc, so when someone with powers shows up (be it clayface or superman) its a chunk more impressive.

But both companies are in the business of oversaturation. Can anyone explain to me the differences between:

1)Batman
2)Detective Comics
3)Batman: The Dark Knight
4)Batman and Robin
5)Baman Incorporated

Particularily the first three.

Probably should make a comic book movie thread, but how incompetent are the folks over at WB. They own DC and have the rights to all of their properties, yet have almost no idea on how to pull off a cohesive cinematic universe. Marvel and Disney are killing it, and now Fox is leaving WB in the dust with the X-Men/FF shared universe. It just baffles me that WB can't get this thing going.

Their animated movies, while short, are phenomenal. Maybe the flop that was Green lantern (Ryan Reynolds is simply not a star) made them gunshy. Hopefully they are waiting for final MoS figures before they move on their properties.

I don't really blame Reynolds for GL, I blame the writing & directing of that film more. I also felt Blake Lively was a terrible Carol Ferris. Basically WB just put all the wrong people in charge of that film.

I wouldn't blame Reynolds for Green Lantern either, but he certainly didn't help the film.

I thought Liev Schreiber was great and Will.I.Am (sp?) was surprisingly good.

But, bless them, retcons are the dimmed-blue Sin Cara lights of the comic book world. Or those lights are the dusty finishes of the production world. Or... something... I had a point there...

The last month of buying comics has look like this for me

3 weeks ago- 6 books
Two weeks ago- 0 books
Last week- 8 books
This week- 1 book

Now we are getting into the meat of SDCC. Batman/Superman coming in 2015, The Flash in 2016, and Justice League in 2017.
