NBA Thread - 2012-13

After releasing Stephen Jackson, The Spurs signed Tracy McGrady for the playoffs. T Mac was one of the best players in the NBA before suffering some major knee injuries that slowed him down. The last few years he bounced around the league as a solid bench player before playing this season in China. Now he joins a Spurs team that is looking to make a championship run. He likely won't play much but barring a major upset he should get his first ever playoff series victory.

I think McGrady could be a valuable piece for the Spurs, honestly. Manu Ginobili likely won't be back until the last game of the regular season, so they won't be able to lean on him for his usual production load -- it'll probably take him part of the first round series, if not the whole thing, to get his legs back under him. Not to mention, Diaw's hurt, Parker, Leonard, and Duncan are all banged up, too. They could use someone, like McGrady, who can come off the bench in short spurts and take some pressure off their starters and offer some decent production while he's in there. Don't get me wrong, he's not the Tracy McGrady of old, but he's still got something left -- he wasn't bad in China -- and Greg Popovich can make nearly anybody a useful piece for his team.

Last day of the regular season drama:

Stephen Curry got the 3 point record. Not only does he shoot alot of three ball, he shot it at a high percentage too. Amazing!

Utah lost meekly to Memphis who seem a lot better without Rudy Gay with the emphasis on defence notched up even more on an already elite defensive team.

What a game at LA with Parsons' last gasp 3 into overtime. Mchale is a terrible in game decision maker for the Rockets. He might be a good coach but his in game decisions is horrible. Lost the game when he didn't stop the rot when his bench was losing the lead. Relies too much on hero ball by Harden to bail him out and when Harden has an off night like today, Rockets struggle to get points when needed. Speaking on Harden, his hero ball antics today cost Rockets the game. Maybe he tanked it because he wanted to revisit his old team in the playoffs?

Pacers, Hawks, Celtics, Spurs are all limping into the playoffs. I don't include the Bucks because they are definite folder for the Heat in the first round and they seem to know it and are just phoning it in. Pacers should be happy they got the disinterested Hawks instead of the Bulls. Spurs is ripe for another first round upset versus the Lakers, especially now that the Lakers are finally playing through their twin towers. Spurs would have crushed the Rockets with Mchale as Rockets coach.

Clippers/Memphis, Spurs/Lakers, Knicks/Celtics and OKC/Rockets are the ties I'm looking forward to in this playoffs. This season's playoffs have the potential to match last year's excitement, with the same narrative, all who wants to win it have to go through the Heat. Here's to a great postseason.

The Jazz put up 70 points -- along with a miserable second half -- in a game where they were fighting to make the playoffs. That type of game is why this team just didn't have it in the tank to make it -- they don't know how to fight and claw to win a game, they just roll over and let the other team run roughshod over them. Paul Millsap was a non-factor, Mo Williams and Randy Foye were awful, and the defense just seemed to give on every single possession where they needed a stop.

The Jazz need to fully commit to rebuilding at this stage, since it just hasn't been working. Let Jefferson, Millsap, and Williams walk -- maybe make a run at Brandon Jennings or another young free agent -- and commit to rebuilding the team through the draft and stockpiling young assets. This puts a lot of (unnecessary) pressure on Derrick Favors too, as he's heading into his 4th year in the league and needs to show that he can actually be a star player in this league. This goes for Enes Kanter and Gordon Hayward, too. Jazz fans love winning, and they won't be happy if this team keeps performing like it did this year. The thing is, realistically, this team is going to be bad next year (and maybe even beyond that) if they want to actually make a run at a championship with this core, at some point.

It's the playoffs in case none of you know.

Knicks and Pacers both advanced. As did the Thunder and Grizzlies. Very disappointing end to the Clippers season. Real chokers out in Lob City.

Crazy that Golden State is the lone California team to advance in the playoffs. Who would've predicted that at the beginning of the year?

Brooklyn/Chicago GAME 7 is tonight. The only series to go to 7. Should be wild. I'm hoping for Brooklyn to win so I can still hope for an all New York ECF.

This better be the Knicks year, but first we had Jordan in the way and now we got the man who was crowned MVP for his 4th time joining an elite class that does include MJ, King James.

This better be the Knicks year...

It had better be, yet I can't see a team winning a championship with Carmelo Anthony as the #1 guy. Yes, if he gets hot, he can shoot his way far into the playoffs, but since he can't be bothered playing defense and since he fires every-damn-time he touches the ball, he has to do better than the 30% he's been shooting the past three games.

It's tough to see the rest of the Knicks standing around when Anthony is on the court; their best hope for scoring being a rebound and put-back. Yet, when he's not in the game, no one seems to know how to take charge...... as if they know everything will revert to the 'Melo Show once he gets back in.

Maybe guys like Jordan and Kobe can get away with the "main man" stuff, but 'Melo isn't in their league and doesn't have their all-around game. He's strictly a gunner....and gunners usually don't win titles.

What a game at San Antonio! Stephen Curry played like an All-Star and was too hot to handle in the 3rd quarter. Golden State should have won this one. Eating humble pie now for underestimating them in the playoffs. Looks like it could end up as a great series if every game is like this one. In face all 4 2nd round series looks to be competitive when even the undermanned Bulls can pull off an upset against the Heat in Game 1.

The game last night in San Antonio was simply amazing. It's also the reason I'm so tired this morning.

I think last night showed the difference in coaching quality. When San Antonio needed baskets, they were getting good shots. When Golden State needed baskets, they were making mistakes and taking tough shots. I think Mark Jackson is a decent coach and will get better with age, but Popavich is simply on another level.

Spurs are getting blown away in the first two games. They need to somehow stop Golden State's guards from going on a hot streak. First game was Curry, game 2 it was Thompson. Jack and Barnes keep getting timely baskets too.

Also, Miami showed up and blew the Bulls third string backcourt away.

All four series are tied at 1-1. Hope the all the series remain competitive throughout.

Spurs are killing the grizzlies right now, actually surprised because I thought Memphis would give San Antonio a run for their money. Its always fun to watch the Spurs play because they are all so well coached and have been a team for what seems like forever now.

Wouldnt mind a Heat/Spurs finals other than the media. But then again I never enjoy the media in sports.

And as I was posting this Memphis just went on a run ...

85-85 going into OT, Spurs only hitting 9 points in the 4th. Maybe I was right about Memphis.

Never count out this Grizzlies team. OT baby!
Huge flagrant foul call at the end. Probably a flop by Allen that could be the difference in this game and series.

Never count them out is right ...

Unfortunately they couldn't finish the job, had the spurs on their heels the whole 4th though. Hopefully next game they play like they did in the 4th all game.

This Grizzlies team has a never quit attitude that is really fun to watch. They just don't have enough outside shooting in the starting 5. The last shot by Bayless was really bad shot selection. But they found a way to score in the 4th quarter. The 4th quarter shows how they can dominate in defence when the Spurs' 3s are not falling. Spurs had many open shots that didn't go in.

What a Game 1 of the ECF!
Miracle shot by George to force overtime.
Critical mistakes by both teams at the end of OT. Wade fouling a 3 point shooter and then George overplaying James without Hibbert in the game. Those last possessions by the Heat shows how Bosh can negate the interior defence of the Pacers by forcing Hibbert out of the game with his excellent shooting.

A James/Wade drive or Bosh mid range -3 point game. Pick your poison. Great start to the series.

That was a great way to start the ECF! Both teams are going to play hard during this series. I think the Pacers can step toe to toe toward the Heat. Indiana did a great job on the boards, they can play defense. Indiana did a bad job turning over the ball. Both teams play great, I'm looking forward for rest of the series.

It was a great game last night for ECF I feel the pacers are going to be able to push the heat to a game 7 but ultimately I feel the heat are too talented to lose the series. But this game was a huge wake up call for the heat if I were the pacers I would feel pretty good about their chances for an upset.

I wouldn't be too worried if I was the Heat. I felt the Pacers played the type of game they wanted and still lost. The Heat will make adjustment to get Game 2 back to the type of game they want to play. But still a fascinating series with small ball vs bigs. Battier and West defending each other is funny to watch.

That G1 was a huge blow for the Pacers. They had some extreme luck (George's tying 3 pointer, the foul on Wade right before James GW) and still couldn't pull it out. They will maybe take a game or two since they are a tough out, but Miami should be able to handle them enough to move on back to the Finals again.

Heat pacers are tied 2-2 does anyone think that the pacers will win this in 7 I said I felt they would push the heat to 7 but lose but after the past few games the heat I feel might lose also do you think either of these teams can beat the spurs in the finals???

Who would have thought the East would have a longer series? Best series of this playoffs so far with the contrasting styles of both team. Heat has too much talent to not win against this offensively challenged Pacers team.

The Spurs will love it to face the Pacers, who are simply a Memphis clone with better shooting in the starting line up but with no bench scoring. The Heat will force Spurs to go against their preferred line up of Splitter in the game more often than not.

Heat won on talent. But there were some bullshit calls in the 3rd quarter to force George Hill off the court and completely turn the game. Pacers without Hill struggled against the toothless Knicks and stood no chance against the terrific Heat defence.

It didn't matter. LeBron was on another level. And what bullshit call against Hill?

I thought the offensive foul was harsh. But the Pacers got some of the bullshit calls in Game 6 tonight. So I guess bad officiating evens itself out in a long series?

Game 7 winner takes all. Lebron needs at least one of Wade or Bosh to contribute. As Steve Kerr said, it is like watching the Miami Cavaliers in Game 6. Pacers need their backcourt to turn up.

At this point, I can't help but think Dwayne Wade is on his last legs. He can never seem to stay healthy, and his game is so dependent upon his incredible athleticism. And yes, LeBron needs SOMEONE to help him out. So far, the best help he's had has been Haslem, and that's only been for certain games. Ray Allen is no where to be found, Battier is providing nothing offensively, Bosh and Wade have been shells of themselves.

LeBron has been carrying this team, and he'll have to do it again tomorrow.
