MLB 2012 Playoffs LD: "Who's it gonna be?"

Tracy was announced, that's why he went with the lefty. Then the Nationals went with Moore.

Oh alright, that makes more sense. I was quite frustrated.

Good move to put in the speedy Chambers in this situation. Gotta get that run across. Small ball time.

Cardinals couldn't ask for a better man than Holliday to be coming to the plate in this situation.

Rain Delays sucks.

Yanks/O's have been in one for 2 hours now. They're supposedly gonna start soon though. I have no idea what channel they will be on, and what channel Reds/Giants (who start at 9) will be on, since they both are TBS games.

Originally the start of the Yanks/O's game was to be on TNT, if they started while the Cards/Nats game was on. So I'm guessing TNT will be carrying the Yanks/O's game (since it's not in its normal time slot).

It's on TBS. Reds/Giants on TNT. New York draws better ratings, so they kept it on its original network.

Ichiro made a bad out at 3rd. With 0 outs idk what he was thinking.
He was thinking get to third base with no outs. He just didn't get the job done. It was a bad idea since he was out, and Hammel was reeling after back to back hits, but it happens. Tied at 2 with 2 bad running mistakes (Tex getting out at 2nd was also bad).

Hammel isn't going long in this one. he's up to 90 pitches with one out in the 5th. The way he's pitching he'll be lucky to survive the 6th.

You don't make the first out at 3rd though. You can score without the help of a hit (groundball/sac fly combo, etc.). I don't like stealing 3rd in general. A good amount of the time you can score on a single without moving the extra 90 feet. Plus it let Hammel off the hook a little bit because it got him the first out and cleared the bases. Just seemed like an unnecessarily aggressive move early on.

SF isn't doing itself much favors. 4-0 lead now in the 4th. Going to Cincy down 2-0 looks like a death sentence to me.

Oh I never said it was a smart play. Ichiro got overaggressive and it cost him/them. It was a really bad play.

If he didn't give the O's a clean slate by emptying the bases and getting the first out, who knows how the first inning goes.

Stealing 3rd is fine, just not with 0 outs.

The old rule in baseball: "You never make the first or last out of an inning at 3rd base."

Pretty much this. With 2 outs you'll need a hit anyways (and would have a good chance at scoring from 2nd) unless it's a passed ball and with 0 outs you don't need a hit at all. With 1 out it can be alright strategy, but more often than not I'd prefer no steals of 3rd (from a managers perspective).

agreed, although for me I'm fine with a guy stealing 3rd with 2 outs in certain instances.

1. If the pitcher is prone to passed balls/wild pitches (either by being erratic or a sinkerballer/knuckleballer).
2. If the pitcher is paying zero attention to you and you can get a huge jump.

Naturally he needs to be all but 100% certain he will be safe, too.

RUSSELL FUCKING MARTIN!!!!!!!!!

And the whole argument that was just being had earlier about intangibles existing or not, and numbers being able to determine everything; what number explains why closers suck when they come in in non-save situations? There isn't any.

Longball, small-ball, double off the closer, 6-2 Yankees, Top 9

Joe Girardi made the ballsiest move of his entire managerial career. Sure the move makes sense given his struggles, but punch hitting for a legend in the 9th inning of a 1-run game takes grapefruit sized balls.

The fact that it worked as magnificently as it did makes it even more amazing.

How incredible is Raul Ibañez? Also, I'm pretty agitated about these start times. San Fran fans will be watching at 10 am their time? Cardinals continue to start at 3 pm. I mean, I really wouldn't mind a night game.

I prefer day games. Always have. Something to watch at work is really cool on special occasions.

I'd say this was an exciting night of baseball. 2 ninth inning comebacks, 2 walkoffs, one of the teams staving off elimination in the ninth. Wow.

Who's got a chance to redeem himself in the bottom of the ninth in an elimination game?

Scott Rolen, the same guy who blew the Reds chance at a sweep.

I love baseball.
