Sorry guys, I meant to reply to some of these ages ago;
Fit-in-or-die was what made me write Saxton in the first place, that mentality was awful and I just wanted to write a comedy character knowing full well he'd probably just lose all the time. But now it just feels like too much effort when I'm part of a community with, honestly, a larger selection of better characters and a better way of doing shows. Sure, they're not as regular as I'd like but everything is so much fun that it hardly matters. I will defend game eFeds and AES forever.
It's really a shame the fed's reverted to back to 2010 in a sense. It was a great time and I really had a ton of fun while I was in. Unfortunately, I feel like sometimes the focus on competitiveness becomes people trying to be too "serious" or "realistic" and trying to win by spilling words onto a page instead of having fun building an angle.
Yeah, I can count too many times where winning and losing have gotten in the way of actually having fun with an angle, like the build up to Kingdom Come being a lot of fun last year, and then it got overshadowed because the result didn't "go the right way". And again, in order to get the result, you've gotta tick other people's boxes, which is painfully, painfully boring. Not just write a good and entertaining RP, but have it held against you if you don't spend this much time talking about your opponent, etc.
Again, I can't comment on the direction the fed is in, but it seems pretty widely agreed upon that there's no place for the Saxtons and/or Saboteurs, S.H.I.T.s, Barbosas, Alhazreds, or any of the great characters that made it fun to RP in my time in the fed.
I remember how excited Doc and I would be when we got an angle and we'd plan our RPs for the whole cycle, usually culminating in some sort of grand adventure or parody of a famous movie. I don't think the most fun I ever had in the fed was when Doc and I wrote our Star Wars parody.
I think creative are incredibly respectful when it comes to characters like that, S.H.I.T has never, apart from in my one and only no-show, looked like a complete monster. I think I have Ty, Showtime and Blade to thank for that, since they set the precedent, even in defeat the guy in the cardboard costume looked like a juggernaught. But yeah, characters like that need creative freedom, which I am not sure is available anymore.
I took a different writing path with Ty lately that involves a lot more vague metaphors and probably a bit chaotic writing that probably only makes sense to myself since I always project myself into the character when I write. I know Bagpipes mentioned he understands my writing as he's got a similar mentality with Slaughter, but for everyone else I'm sure it's equivalent to Bray Wyatt spouting randomness without any real payback whereas I'm trying to build to that, but I can't or don't want to just hit everyone over the head with a hammer explaining everything. So with that I'm likely not going to win since I don't mention my opponents much, even by name I try to avoid it. I kinda had no choice at Gold Rush because I was in a championship match so I had to play it for the votes.
I know where you're coming from essentially is what I'm saying, and it does get frustrating when it doesn't go your way. I felt I should be World Champion thrice over the last cycle plus, but I'm trying to not let it get to me that I kept losing. However, I can't keep writing my character the same way forever, then it's just a "standard" RP for me and if someone tries a different angle, they beat me. So I try something different but because it maybe doesn't check those boxes as you referred to, I don't win. It's all a very subjective voting process, everyone has different tastes and my writing right now isn't in that good flavor so to speak. So stuck between a rock and a hard place, I'll just stay there and do what I want.
This is, more or less, it in a nutshell. If you play for the votes you write the same RP every round.
Hey, man I'm still around just needed to freshen things up with a new character. Alhazred was getting way too complicated mindset and story wise for me to keep up with on a consistent basis. I have a certain level of protection of him as a character and I think I was starting to deter a bit from who I wanted him to be.
I feel like our run as a tag team was hindered by the fit in to win style Doc mentioned. I didn't take as many chances and go as far out as I would have liked too because I wanted to win, so I held back a bit creatively. Formulaic, adding more than it needs to make it longer, and general references to your opponent bore me to death. I would throw in a promo at a random point in the RP just for the sake of having dialogue.
I still enjoy the fed and I do like the attention to realism it tries though. I appreciate within a show aspect, like the shows themselves should only get outlandish occasionally to make those moments more special and the sense of realism. But I wish the RPs themselves didn't have to be that way. Not a judgement on creative either as everyone has their own perceptions of what is good. Telling someone they're wrong for not liking Saxton is like telling someone they're wrong for not liking Led Zeppelin. Art and writing should always be subjective.
Sorry if I put words in your mouth then, mate.
Yeah, this is basically what I am saying, good writing is good writing. I have nothing against using a formula, I know Barbosa uses one, and I use my own, but at least their our formula's that we can tweak at our leisure. This might sound nasty but I always think of set-criteria as the tools of the average. And yeah, I think we played for the votes too often, apart from when we needed to.
I mean, I am really not trying to badmouth the fed here, and I'd recommend anyone joins and/or returns if they felt the itch because they guys do a great job, all in all.

It's something of a shame I have so much other writing to do as there are still three major feuds that Barbosa should have had, all of which I thought could be intermingled.
It would start off with Barbosa and SHIT vs "Anti-mental illness" Dr Zeus and his allies, only for the climax to reveal that Zeus was an agent of Ty Burna, leading to BarboSHIT vs Ty and co, complete with another HIAC match.
Then as part of Ty's digging into both Barbosa and SHIT's pasts, he would discover information about Barbosa essentially being the next evolution of Scaled Humanoid Industrial Technology, "SHIT 2.0" if you will, leading to SHIT turning on Barbosa out of sheer jealousy, leading to an epic expansion and intertwining of back-stories, culminating in an even crazier match that the Texas Deathmatch - I think I called it Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD).
I remember you proposing all that, it would've been glorious.
