Glass Ass: The OFFICIAL JGlass Thread

Ironically, I'd say the Maximoffs in Avengers are much closer to their comic equivalents than X-Men's Quicksilver (aka Quicksinger) - but I also found them rather boring, particularly Wanda.

Well it seemed like DoFP's Quicksilver was basically completely conjured up by the creators of the movie, the only connection to his comic equivalent being that horribly contrived and almost cringeworthy scene in the elevator where he mentions his mom used to know a guy who could control metal, as if there's hundreds of men in the world with such a talent.

That was a long sentence.

As for The Avenger's Maximoffs...

I didn't like how one dimensional they were. They were also really fucking stupid to the point that it was infuriating. You hate Tony Stark because one of his shells killed your family (which is a really stupid motivation in the first place, but whatever), so in order to get revenge you decide to work for the AI he helped create? Really? You didn't think there was going to be a Catch-22 there?

Quicksilver was pretty funny at points, good facial expressions and that type of humor. Scarlet Witch had interesting cleavage as her main selling point. Other than that she was Quicksilver's really easily manipulated sister.

Representative of the comics, not representative of the comics, my only requirement is that the movies are good in their own right. Age of Ultron was basically a kaleidoscope of fanservice and it hurt my head.

DOC! Hi!

If you're a Maximoff purist, you might not be too happy. The action scenes with them are pretty cool, but in terms of how they're used in the story... it's just kind of off. Once you see it we can discuss it more, as I don't want to spoil anything. I anticipate some disappointment in you.

Sounds about how I expected. Looking forward to it, either way. I think I'll be going next week and then I'll dump some thoughts in here.

Glad to hear the end is in sight for school. Is that one of the new MGS games? The ones that people were mad about because it was so short?
Yep. Basically, it's a small lead in to what will be the full fifth game in the series, Phantom Pain. It's actually not that short, that was just based on a miscommunication from a preview in a gaming magazine. It's split into I believe six missions and the "main" one is only a few hours long (not counting achievements, sidequests, replays, etc). It's basically meant to be replayed and handled differently each time, so I think that's where the big misconception came in. I've only just started and it is very good, very atmospheric, and very difficult. Just like I was hoping.

I've heard a ton of good things about Shadow of Mordor, like it's a sleeper hit. My backlog's so huge right now, though (but I'm finally getting the time to actually play through it, so hey).

The thing that killed me about Age of Ultron was all the shitty one liners that were constantly said. I'm not a huge fan of Whedon and I get a lot of people liked the banter but it came off extremely corny for me at times. Other than I thought it was a blast.

Maybe it's because everyone lowered my expectations but I really enjoyed it last night. There were parts I certainly liked better than the first Avengers but to say it's overall a better a movie is a stretch. But I think I'd definitely give this a second viewing than watch the first one for a tenth time.

Vision's scenes were pretty fucking great by the way.

I saw it yesterday afternoon with my cousin & his kid & enjoyed it, & will be seeing it at least one more time, probably two (My mom wants to see it with me when she comes out at the end of the month, & I may go again later today to watch it by myself). I still think GOTG is my favorite movie in the MCU though. The cheesy one-liners didn't bother me at all, though I have spent the last 2 months watching all the F&F movies & then after that re-watching all the movies in the MCU so I've had 2 months of hearing cheesy one-liners that I was kind of used to it.

Now I plan on re-visiting the past Mad Max movies before seeing that next weekend.

I really enjoyed it, though as pointed out there is so much fan service. Liked Hulk vs Hulkbuster, but I am still holding out for a more brutal Hulk vs Thor at some point, since there is something very compelling, even to someone that has read about 3 pages of a comic, about a big blonde guy with a hammer using it to chin a beserk green monster, euphemism aside.

I'm so psyched for Mad Max. This is easily the movie I'm most excited for this year, including Avengers 2 and Star Wars 7.

By no means did I think The Avengers was a bad movie. My only big gripe with it was it felt like Marvel Studios and/or Joss Whedon got complacent and just made a movie where they did whatever they wanted and favored stroking their egos over making the best movie possible.

It's hard for me to explain what I mean by that, but the next time I see the movie (which should be next weekend I think), I'll take notes about what really drove me nuts.

I'd like to turn you into my crime fighting talking sidekick cat. We could rid the world of evildoers and then I would scratch that sweet spot under your neck. Tell me you haven't thought about this.

I have not thought of teaming up with you to be a crime fighting duo, but I have a few problems with this suggestion.

Why am I your sidekick?

If I was a talking animal sidekick, I'd be a dog, bear, otter, or eagle.

I don't want anyone touching the sweet spot under my neck. First of all I don't like when people touch my neck, and I especially don't want evildoers knowing about this potential weakness.

I work alone. Partners slow me down.

Just saw it. Need some time to process it but it was mostly all right. The really cool stuff (Ultron in concept and some scenes, Vision, most of the fight scenes, Stark and Cap in general are still great) and the really lame stuff (the bad kind of cheesy lines, using Black Widow like shit after her excellent role in Cap 2, the Maximoffs and how they were used, unnecessary property damage, weird pacing) just sort of canceled each other out. I feel about how i thought I'd feel - a decent stopgap to tide us over until Thanos shows up and shit gets real.

I will have to dissect my feelings later. Very conflicted, mostly positive.

So as a fellow Cycho, years of shady characterization of Scott Summers might have a huge payoff, given what happens in Secret Wars #1.
He may very well save all of reality.

Cyclops IS Right!

Ugh, right when I get out, they suck me back in.

I JUST cancelled all of my comic subscriptions a week or so ago because I haven't had the motivation to read them. Other than Magneto, All New X-Men, and Uncanny X-Men, there has been nothing of note that I enjoyed reading. And this Secret Wars thing just seems like an annoying mega event I don't feel like keeping up with.

But Cyclops being featured as a central character in a multiverse wide storyline has my attention, especially if he isn't being featured as the naysayer or stickler or straight laced guy for the "cool" heroes to flip off before they go do their own thing, which inevitably works.

Secret Wars is the end of the 616, so might as well stick with it until the end. When they said everybody dies, they weren't joking, issue 1 was nuts.

Maybe I'll swing by the store tomorrow and pick it up.

I don't get what Marvel is trying to accomplish here. From what the comic store folks told me, they're basically just hoping to reboot the numbers on the books. But if people are dying...

Everything is ending. The Ultimate Universe, the Regular Universe, all of the cartoons, alternate timelines, everything. Marvel knows it's been a good run, but trying to have continuity in a universe that goes back 75 years is too hard. This gives them a chance to erase everything, keep what they want from all of their multiple realities, and cut the crap. I am ecstatic over X-Men '92 coming out.

Probably trying to grab the attention of new readers mostly, which is why both Marvel & DC seem to reboot everything every couple years.

I'll just wait for the trade. I too have been struck with what I call comicbook fatigue, I was buying so much shit & it was starting to feel like too much work to keep up with all my books so I just dropped everything last winter, a pleasant side effect of dropping all my comics is my bank account seems to have grown three sizes with me no longer dropping $20-30 a week on comics. I now just stick to tpbs, picked up a couple Lazarus trades last week when they were 50% off for FCBD, & I have a coupon that's good for tomorrow only for 40% of a tpb so I probably swing by my shop tomorrow & pick up something else & I think that'll be it at least till I'm done reading those.

X-Men 92? Is that going to be based on the animated show?

And are they trying to just make their comic book universe go together with the cinematic universe? That would be a brilliant idea if they want to up readership. The people who are buying the comics are just going to keep buying the comics, and then they'll bring in the fans of the movies who want to keep up with what their favorite characters are up to in between movies.

Yeah, if I can find the patience, I'll just wait for the TPBs. Cheaper, and you get to read everything at once.

I'm guessing they're trying to make it more like the Cinematic Universe. The big (unconfirmed) rumor is The X-Men and Mutants won't be in the same earth as the rest of the Marvel universe. Marvel is going to push the Inhumans into the minority race role. I'm kind of happy the X-Men may get their own universe, I'm sick of all of the crossovers.
