So I got into my first major restraint at the hospital tonight. It was a new patient that had just come in, and he was a 19 year old MMA fighter with a traumatic brain injury. Apparently this injury was to the part of the brain that made him not be an asshole, because he was threatening people and demanding shit that we could not/would not give him.
To cut right to the chase, he demanded we take him out for a cigarette at 11:00 at night, which is a big no-no, so he flipped out and threw a chair at an employee. That's when the restraint started. Four people went for the arms, two on each arm, and your Friendly Neighborhood JGlass decided to take the legs. This would have been a good plan had 20 other people not decided to jump in the restraint, pushing our target forward and forcing me into a seated position on the bed, allowing the patient to wrap his arm around my chin and put me into a sort of chin lock. I escaped pretty quickly and went right back to the legs and we tackled him onto the ground, but a confused nurse wrapped up my arms thinking I was the patient, temporarily incapacitating me. After helping him realize his mistake by tactfully yelling, "Dude, you're PRT'ing ME!" I jumped right back into the restraint, taking charge of the lower legs, specifically the ankles. It took us a good 10 minute to get him onto the bed where shots were administered, thus ending the restraint.
The damage? I have a cut behind my left ear, to the left of my left eye, and a couple cuts under my chin. The remedy? A couple beers while recounting the battle to the fairer sex at the bar. All in all a glorious night, and I plan on hitting the gym tomorrow morning in preparation for round 2 tomorrow.
