Day-Lewis is pretty much the greatest living actor right now(And quite possibly of all time), It just seems like a crime of sorts if he doesn't win.
Ehhhhh let's not go that far. Just because Newman and Brando are dead doesn't mean that acting is. Don't discount Tom Hanks, Gene Hackman, Clint Eastwood, or Jackie Chan. Especially Jackie Chan.
But yeah, Day-Lewis will win.
Really? Lawrence? She is great, she is amazing for someone so young but i don't think she deserves the oscar for this. Then again, i felt she deserved the oscar for Winter's Bone.
I think I misspoke: of the films I saw from this list I thought Lawrence was the best. I especially think that the little girl from Beasts does NOT deserve it because she basically had to act like a cute little girl that knows nothing about the world, which I imagine was particularly easy for her on the account that she is a cute little girl that knows nothing about the world.
I've seen none of these films but the sheer talent compared to the best supporting actress is incomprehensible. The only irish film critic who i actually respect and frequently listen to says Waltz deserves the oscar more than anyone else but I want to see Tommy Lee Jones get the win, or De Niro solely for bouncing back from that piece of shit Red Lights(I really wanted to like that film, i really did). What is your reason for Hoffman not winning? Not a Scientology guy?
I just thought that he was decidedly good, not great. Jones was great, De Niro kicked it up a notch, and Waltz was phenomenal. I think he's just overshadowed here.
There is a lot less talent here. Amy Adams is a good talent but I think Sally Fields has it for the same reason Day-Lewis has it;it's a film about one of the great American leaders(And his wife).
Yeah, and it wouldn't be some great travesty if Fields wins either; she was terrific. I just think Amy Adams was in a film where everyone was expecting Phoenix and Hoffman to blow them all away, but Amy Adams wound up putting out the best performance.
Cloud Atlas is a film that I've been paying close attention too. Critics seems to praise it to high heavens or just slate it in an alley and piss on it's discarded remains. It interests me and looks like a good flick so I'll give it a watch when it arrives. As for the academy, what do you expect? Once the Wachowski's were brothers but that's not the case any more. The academy is made up of about 90% 50/60 year old white men that are used to more traditional ideals and probably wouldn't want the Wachowski's anywhere at all near the ceremony.
They are old white dudes, but most of them come from show business themselves, and that is a traditionally liberal group of people. It's not like the Academy is the United States Congress. It's probably closer to the Canadian Congress. They have one of those, right?
If you're suggesting that the Academy is biased against the Wachowski's because Larry is now Lana, I'd have to respectfully disagree. They've never given the Wachowski's the respect they deserve. The Matrix was a game changing and fantastic film, and they didn't even get nominated for best director or best original screen play. Hell, you could argue it deserves a best picture nomination as it's held up to the test of time far more than 3/5 of that list (the exceptions being American Beauty (which is coincidentally my 3rd or 4th favorite film of all time depending when you ask me) and The Sixth Sense), and had the academy been doing the 10 nominations it would have been criminal to leave it off that list. Also, Speed Racer is a phenomenal movie that was critically dismissed, likely by a lot of the same people that make up the Academy. They just don't get it.
Two other films that could've gotten something was The Grey & Seven Psychopaths. Also the Raid Redemption should've totally gotten a best foreign film nod. Is there a badass award? No? Well make one, and give it to Liam Neeson and Ed Harris every year.
Yeah, I could see both of those movies getting some Academy recognition, but they were both kind of overlooked this year, especially Seven Psychopaths.
