For PS4, is anyone playing The Division, and if so, what are your thoughts? FPS isn't my favorite genre by any means, but I'm having a lot of fun with it. No contest for me regarding enjoying Division much more than Call of Duty.

Well good news then, The Division is a TPS!

As for its quality...it's okay. I've put in some time on the game, but I think that I've gotten as much enjoyment out of it that I'm going to get. I have all high-end equipment, but I'm not one of those players that meticulously chooses their gear so that each bonus from each piece is perfect for the build, resulting in having a damage output that can single-handedly take down elite enemies.

Playing that game honestly is also a liability. The majority of people in the Dark Zone use exploits to constantly get the best gear which they either equip or sell so they can buy better gear when it becomes available. So you can either exploit and grind (which is SO boring, I tried it once and it sucked) and succeed, or you can play the game honestly and get left behind as players with better equipment either exclude you from Dark Zone missions because your gear isn't good enough, or you get killed by Rogues in the Dark Zone that have perfect equipment for killing other players.

I believe it was the developers that said the game is actually fundamentally broken and that it's impossible to fix it to prevent exploiting, and even cheating. I don't know if that's just true of the PC version or the console versions as well, but it shows you how fucked up that game is.

I don't fully understand why players sacrifice fun game play and challenging missions for exploiting and grinding. I get that you get better equipment, and I suppose the fun of the game comes from constantly improving your equipment, but it seems dumb to just power through a carefully designed level with like, 12 other people exploiting it for four hours just to get a few pieces of gear that are helpful.

Duelyst. Check it out. It's essentially Hearthstone/M:tG meets Final Fantasy Tactics. It works on the same payment model as Hearthstone; free-to-play, get cards quicker by sending money.

Look me up as Tyranaes if you want to get sniped down by my Songhai Ranged deck.

That does look pretty cool, might be a fun way to kill some time.

I have this existential problem when I play games like Hearthstone, though, where it's almost entirely multiplayer and the only objective is to make your deck stronger. I'll play for a while, get pretty good, make a good deck, be satisfied with everything... and now what? The only way to improve your deck after that point is to either pay money or play so often that you get lots of currency to buy packs and even then you rarely pull anything that will be of use to you. It's at that point I realize that there is no point to this game and that I can play for years and years and even if I do get lucky and get the right pulls and put together a great deck and become dominant, at the end of the day I'm only succeeding at a game that I downloaded to pass the time when I'm taking a dump and that nobody will care when I'm dead.

So I generally try to stay away from these types of games, but this one looks cool.

Got to say, I really underestimated Overwatch. I thought it would be a moderate success at best, and a huge flop at worst, but having played it, it's really surprised me in how good it is. Extremely polished, well optimized and really fun to play.

Isn't that most games though? I do try to play a lot of games that offer some kind of parable or lesson, like The Witness or Papers, Please (never finished it, couldn't stand to let Sergei die), but I try not to attach too much importance to what I do. Thanks to the technological advances since the Industrial Revolution, I'm not subsistence farming for 18 hours a day, so I find myself with some free time and you can only jerk off so much.

That being said, it's a pretty good way to kill time when you're not jerking off. The top tier decks in ladder mode are definitely $$$, but there's a draft mode called Gauntlet, where you get cards for playing and if you do well enough, get a ticket for a free gauntlet run. So if you're smarter than the average bear, you can build up a set fairly quickly.

I used to be into M:tG and got out of those kinds of games because it often came down to having the cash to build a strong deck (totally feel your complaint there), and while there's definitely an element of that in Duelyst, the strategic element introduced by the 9x5 game board allows smart budget decks to be very competitive.

The only thing I have an issue with in overwatch is that there are some maps where there is literally only one way into the defender area. You'd have to be a fully co ordinated team and multiple times as good as the opposition to get through some of those gateways, since any 2nd game doofus like me tonight could lay 6 laser turrets around in a way that almost guarantees a death before even getting close to the objective, what with all the robot turret and dwarven turrets and snipers and ice walls and shield guys there are. Outside of that one flaw it's an amazing game that doesn't seem to have many lag issues - the "recommended" server for Australians is the one for America so whoever got that to not suck extreme doggie doo doo deserves a raise.

Dark souls is still my love though. +10 lightning astora greatsword all the way.

Certain types of game that have no real goal beyond winning and improving your abilities to win, sure. Games like The Division or Destiny do it by constantly making better equipment available, card games like Hearthstone or Marvel War of Heroes do it by making the best cards almost impossible to get without paying money, and sports games do it by letting you play season after season after season.

There are games with more definitive endpoints, even ones that allow you to keep playing after you finish the story, like Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Grand Theft Auto.

Though in general, yeah, nothing we do matters and we're all going to die.

It sounds like a clever idea, maybe worth checking out, especially if they come up with a mobile version.

Numbers I had a feeling you'd be keeping your ear to the ground. I see you sometimes when I'm lurkin on Smogon.

Anyway this new Pokémon game looks pretty beastly:

Again the EU release is a few days after. I'm not that mad, I can wait. It's only 5 days.

I love all the starters. The owl is getting lots of attention but I find the sealion thing cute so I'll probably choose it. I have never gone with the water first time before, so it'll be a new experience.

The legendaries are pretty majestic. The literal moonbat is quite unorthodox, loving it. Predicting a Dark/Fairy typing b/c the moon & night time associations and all.

The overworld is finally fully getting rid of the "grid", it seems. It looks awesome. Customisation appears to be back, so that's great news. I'm glad players of other skin tones can get a character closer to what they feel more accurately represents them.

The region is full of a different cultural flavour to what the series has had before, so it feels fresh.

All in all, hype thrusters activated. Roll on November, I'm going to a WWE house show then as well!

Yes mate, I'm there all the time now. I'm trying to get better at battling but I suck on Battle Spot and on Pokemon Showdown but it's always fun.

I bought a slim PlayStation 2 because, no two ways about it, it's a sexy piece of kit. Those games you thought were amazing? They're actually shit. I'm holding out hope for We ❤️ Katamari, otherwise it seems the majority of games that still hold up - Jak, Ratchet, Prince of Persia, God of War, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Ico, Shadow of the Collosus, Okami - have been ported to more recent consoles.

Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth is now out for PS4. Hoping it will keep me occupied until Witcher 3: Blood and Wine releases at the end of the month.

Persona 3 holds up well.

Failing that, the old Smackdowns are a laugh to have a look at for the roster/graphics if nothing else.

Persona 3 holds up well.

Though if you're going to play Persona 3, play Persona 3 Portable on PSP and choose the female protagonist. The story is far better told with her (better social links all around, plus Elizabeth's is unchanged and as marvelous as always) and it features a lot of the gameplay improvements of Persona 4, including direct party control thank god.

On the subject of PS2 games...

The Xenosaga series is an excellent PS2-only game series.

Gitaroo Man is phenomenal (as in, in my top ten of all time) though it also had a PSP release that has crisper graphics and two decent enough extra songs. The tradeoff is an easier difficulty since the PSP is more cramped than the original controller.

Steambot Chronicles is a PS2 gem only I've played. Has its flaws but it also has a wonderful heart and was doing proper morality choices years before Mass Effect.

The Viewtiful Joe games are brilliant and I don't think they've been rereleased yet (nor will they ever).

Persona 4 is available on PSN, plus the Vita rerelease has a lot of extra content (including The Worst Character In The Series, so take it or leave it) but it still counts.

PaRappa The Rapper 2 might not hold a candle to UmJammer Lammy but it's still a lovely game.

And this may be personal preference but I still love Smackdown vs. RAW 2007.

So hey, there are still some PS2-only games that haven't been rereleased or ported and still hold up. I'm actually trying to play the entire Xenosaga series by the end of the year, got my old system out of the closet to do just that.

Good news: We ❤️ Katamari is absolutely siiick, and I spent £10 on it when the market price is over £20, and I found my old copy of Shadow of the Colossus. PlayStation 2 redeemed.

Edit: Still, what the fuck happened to Katamari's boxart?

What makes me sad is that the games a lot of people grew up with on their PS2 were far better than the games in my collection when I was younger.

With the obvious exception of Star Wars Battlefront 2.

Timesplitters

I can tell you with some certainty that the first one was certainly not very good. 2 and Future Perfect were some of my very favourite games and I'm now dreading dipping back into them.

Both Red Factions - also shit. The second one does have Jason Statham voicing a character though. Priceless.

One of these days, I'm going to enjoy an RPG that isn't Pokemon. If you had to pick one, Kingdom Hearts or Kingdom Hearts II?

KH1 is amazing if you take everything it does and forget that there's other games in the series. KH2 is KH1 but with different worlds and no clue what the hell it's trying to do story-wise, but if you're someone who wants to research the wiki to no end or play the first/gba/3ds/psvita/psp games all before it to get an understanding of the story then KH2 is usually considered the better game.
