Extreme Rules: Samoan Strap Match: Umaga vs CM Punk

10302954

Umaga may have decimated CM Punk at Judgment Day, but it seems The Samoan Bulldozer still isn’t finished with Mr. Money in the Bank. The 350-pound savage has challenged The Straightedge Superstar to a Samoan Strap Match at Extreme Rules.

The Samoan Bulldozer has been attacking Punk week after week during his matches. He’s stopped Punk from cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase, thwarting his attempts to face Edge for the World Heavyweight Championship on SmackDown. Despite bulldozing his way through Mr. Money in the Bank at Judgment Day, the savage is thirsty for another battle.

During Punk’s recent match against Chris Jericho on SmackDown, Umaga ran into the ring and attacked The Straightedge Superstar, tying him to the ringpost with a Samoan Strap. Then, he shockingly took the microphone from ring announcer Justin Roberts and offered Punk a challenge.

“You think you’re hurt now? Wait until Extreme Rules because I’m issuing you a challenge … It will be a Samoan Strap Match!” Umaga yelled as Punk was left defenseless in the corner.

The Samoan Bulldozer continued his brutal, animalistic assault on Mr. Money in the Bank, kicking and whipping him. But will Punk continue to be Umaga’s victim? Or will Mr. Money in the Bank finally beat Umaga at his own game – the Samoan Strap Match – at Extreme Rules?

I find it funny how they like to say that this is Umaga's game. As far as I know, this is a standard strap match and he's never competed in one before. Just adding the word Samoan doesn't change a thing. What it does do is give the impression that CM Punk is the underdog. I see the underdog winning this match. I like strap matches. I like both these guys. I'll like this match.

Side note: This feud has no purpose. So far, it's been Umaga randomly attacking Punk for no reason at all. The feud won't end with this match, as that'd be stupid. I expect a couple more matches, then finally a blow-off for Punk's case.

He's a Samona Savage, food is the reason.

I'm looking forward to the blow off match more. This match is set up so Punk can get the cheap win. He'll tap each corner as Umaga drags him around the ring. If that's the type of strap match that it is.

It's strange how Punk has been getting wins over Jericho & Edge, but they're having him look weak against Umaga.

I think this match will be really good. Punk playing the underdog and Umaga continously getting so close to hitting the 4th turnbuckle before Punk comes out of absolutely nowhere with some sort of mad flying kick.
This won't be the blow off to the feud, so we won't see Punk nailing the GTS here. Although, he will obviously try it. And I'm thinking Punk will get 3 turnbuckles twice before being cut off by Umaga, and then on the third time something will happen like Punk will use his speed to make Umaga get his end of the strap tangled up in a turnbuckle or something, and then Punk will get the 4.

And I also agree with 48.7, a match should not be in favour of one person or another simply because of the name. *insert geographical region here* strap match shouldn't mean that the person from that geographical region is the favourite for the match. It's just like JBL shouldn't have been so cocky because the match between him and Eddie Guerrero for the WWE title was a Texas bullrope match. Although, JBL did go on to win it.... Hmmm...

I liked their match at JD, So i'm quitely anticipating this match, I've also like strap/rope matches as well.

With Umaga being some much bigger than CM Punk I cant see any other outcome than Umaga winning, Unless Punk can pull something out of his ass and do something special, He wont keep the big man down long enough to pull him to all four corners.

They may just be trying to build up Umaga again as a main player.

I don't see how beating Punk will do that. It seems that the only people who lose to Punk are Smackdowns two top heels, everybody else seems to be able to get the better of Punk.

This match will be good, no question. I also see Punk stealing a win by either out quicking or out thinking Umaga. This of course will lead to umaga beating the hell out of Punk (since they will still be strapped together) and continuing the feud a bit more. This feud is good for both guys if you ask me, as Umaga is looking to be built back up after injury and Punk gets a chance to show that he can put on a good show with someone other han the top two heels on SD. However, if punk loses this match, I will say I fully expect this feud to be blown off in favor of a swift Punk heel turn.

I've already laid that theory out in a previous thread , so I won't do it here.
Either way, this should be a good match and should do nothing but help both guys, win or lose.

Ehhhh...I don't really like Punk. But I love me some Umaga. I'm still a little iffy on him using the mic. Must be because I was used to his manager speaking, or Umaga just getting the point across with a Samoan Spike. Meh. He isn't terribly awful anyway.

It'll work, as long as they don't have Punk some how going superhuman and dragging Umaga around the ring. If they can have Punk trick Umaga into, say, dragging himself after Punk and Punk just leading him around, then sure. I can dig. But Punk picking up/otherwise dragging Umaga would be ridiculous. Punk is not that strong.

Either way. This isn't the blow-off of the feud, so the winner doesn't really matter. They'll have a blow-off for, as my friend Pretty Young Thing said, Punk's briefcase at The Great American Bash. Punk will win, and challenge Edge at Night of Champions. Either that, or Punk will cash in after Edge's match at Night of Champions. This is of course assuming Edge retains at Extreme Rules. If Hardy gets it, then just substitute Jeff Hardy for Edge.

It's McMahon, he gets a hard on for fat lumps of lard arse hoss like Umanga, so he pushes them to the sky at the expense of people who are clearly better, ie CM Punk.

That's ridiculous to say Rich, Umaga is a damn talneted wrestler who has paid his dues. He's been out with injuries for quite a while, so booking him strongly against a legit fan-favorite upper-midcarder is a great way to give him some momentum again. Plus, we all know Punk will win the blow-off match, which makes him look strong. Nobody looks bad at the end of the day.

Can I ask one question? CM Punk won MITB? Umaga has been too busy eating some dogs to be wrestling for the last month and he comes back and beats the guy who basically has a knife at the champion's throat. Vince is an ass hole! He hates Punk for some reason maybe cos Heyman liked him so much or Punk isn't a steroid lover or he dosen't kiss ass like the others. I don't know why because sure Punk isn't the best but in the WWE he's better than half the crap there.

If Umaga wins (possibly by eating Punk) then Extreme Rules will be turned off by half the WWE audience.

I've never been much of a CM Punk fan, but he has always been given many chances to hold the belts as well as MITB. So, to call Vince an A-hole is a little unfair. It's not as if he never gives CM Punk a chance at anything. He's a popular wrestler.

Umaga on the other hand I absolutely love. Great wrestler and a joy to watch in the ring. It's great to see him back from his injuries.

If the match goes well at Extreme Rules, I would love to see this feud build up more. With Punk being so popular and Umaga actually having more fans then some people might think, this could have the potential to be really good.

i think punk and umaga are actually having a good time with this. umaga gets decent exposure after injuries, and at the end of the day i am expecting punk to come out on top which i am sure umaga could really care less. no harm, no foul to either guy. after their feud, umaga will go on to destroy someone else and get pushed to the moon, and punk will become champion. it's all good.

Yeah, anyone would be better than boring as fuck Edge as the Champion.. I've marked for the Undertaker for years.

And the sooner they fire that annoying ass clown Jericho, the better.

I don't see how beating Punk will do that. It seems that the only people who lose to Punk are Smackdowns two top heels, everybody else seems to be able to get the better of Punk.

Well maybe if Punk beats Umaga then Umaga could become a top heel again like he was two years ago. But I agree with a lot of people on here and think the feud will keep on going on atleast until to the newly rechristianed "The Bash" which might be another stipulation match, or probably for the brief case.
What I'm really looking foreward to though is maybe Jeff beating Edge for the title and having Punk and Jeff work a program. Or what if at Night of Champions we get an Umaga vs Jericho for the IC title assuming Jericho beats Mysterio. I know they wrestled a little bit after Jericho came back but it wasn't too big of a deal then.
Back to E.R. I don't see Punk easily winning this one if he even does. That would kinda suck if Punk did win and they keep up the feud because Punk would have already beat Umaga in a match that he named, but if Umaga wins it then I could see it keep on going for a while longer still.

Oh yeah? You've marked for the greatest legend in modern times? That's so weird, I didn't know that there were marks for legends, that seems redundant.

And you're really going to say that anyone would be better than Edge or Jericho? Is this based off some knowledge you possess that others lack, or do you just hate Canadians?

I don't think umaga is not going to win this one its too predictable. The reason is that the wwe builds punk as a face that defys the odds and wins by the skin of his teeth and that can work with his match with umaga. If umaga squashes him twice there would me no reason to continue the fued which I still don't know the reason for it but I digress. Punks needs the win to gain more momentuim so he doesn't look like a former fluke champion. Fyi I believe the only reason Punk beat jericho because plays into jerichos charecter who believes everyone is screwing him and being edge just makes edge look like a weak champion as usual

Now hit my music (randy ortons theme)

This feud is a very interesting one but mostly for the wrong reasons. Both of these guys are insanely talented. Punk has always matched up well with big guys who can work because he's naturally adept at telling a story throughout the match. He's like HBK in that way. I think he gets it from years of feuding with Joe.

The problem arises with where both guys are in their career. Going into their first match Umaga was making his return. The guy is a monster and when one returns it's always in your best interest to put them over in a huge way. But then you match him up against Punk who has MitB and almost beat Edge for the title. He's hot so you want to see him pile up the wins.

To no one's surpise Umaga won. Vince loves to stick it to guys in their hometown. But now we have a rematch and Punk has to win here. Umaga has already been shown as a dominate monster. He can now move on to feud with the likes of Rey, Morrison or Undertaker if he's returning. I really think Undertaker vs. Umaga is going to be one of the big Summerslam matches.

It's really unfortunate that two of the three guys on SD! (the other being Morrison) who need to pile up wins are facing one another. The first match was good and so should the second on. This is the double-edged sword that is SD!. The roster is so deep and full of guys you want to see do well that it just can't happen to them all at once.

Well, thing is that CM needs a win at a PPV at some point. He maybe defeated Jericho and Edge, but when it comes to PPVs he has looked weak in the last 2. He has also being portrayed as someone who is copying the opportunistic ways of Edge and that is not good. They need to stop this Push-depush trend they have with him at somepoint or they will get what happened at Wrestlemania when he got the Briefcase, a ton of boos.

At some point Umaga was the same, he was built as a big monster, then after he lost his last man standing match with Cena it went down the hill for him. He became a big threat for the mid card but was the big jobber for main eventers of the likes of HHH and Batista, well it was only once with Big Dave but HHH defeated him every time he wanted to look strong and now even though Umaga Has defeated Punk, his Aura has diminished from what it once was.

Excuse me for my ignorance but WHAT THE FUCK IS A SAMOAN STRAP MATCH? I assume its a regular strap match but with the word Samoan thrown in it to make it fit Umaga's character. I didn't see Judgment Day so I don't know how good of a match Punk and Umaga had. But I don't enjoy this feud. CM Punk is Mr. Money In The Bank. So why does he lose at two consecutive PPVs? Especially to Kane? I think the MITB champ should look strong. So why would they have him lose in his hometown on a PPV? To make a fat ass Samoan who is no longer intimidating look good? WWE has shit the bed with Punk's MITB reign. Unless Umaga wins the MITB briefcase from Punk, WWE has screwed up big time. This match doesn't even matter.

I'm pretty excited for this match. I think it will be a entertaining match and since I personally haven't seen a strap match in a while, it will be a real treat for me. I'm expecting CM Punk to win because I don't think they will make him lose 2 PPVs in a row to the same wrestler and make him look weak. I like Umaga's style in the ring and I think it goes well with Punk's style. Should be a good match for this PPV.

This feud ends here, me thinks. Punk has been getting wins over Edge and Jericho, both of those coming in what I found to be good matches, so I say Punk continues his streak of good matches and wins here at this PPV. I think one of the previous posters was right in saying that Vince loves to stick it to hometown guys and that Umaga making his return increased the odds that he would take the win over Punk. But knowing where Punk is headed later this year, it's time to stop playing games and continue to build the man up right.

Also, I'm thinking (or hoping) that this strap match is decided by pinfall and not touching the corners. Just my weird taste.

The WWE are the masters of lack of explanation.

reason for this feud? none.

explanation for the rules of this match? none.

reason why Umaga picked it? none.

fuck it. So I guess Umaga is mad and CM Punk, and want to slap his skin with a strap. So I gather, anyway. Well, hopefully this will be better than their JDay match, which I found to be hugely disappointing. Im not sure how they can make Punk look good, and legit, if he is hooked up to a much larger guy. Dunno. Guess he finds a way, or some shit.

I don't know what to say about this match. They gave us no explanation at all about how the strap match works but I guess they'll do that in the upcoming weeks. I see Punk winning this since he lost to Umaga at Judgment Day and Punk needs more quality wins before he cash in the briefcase.

Well I'm watching SD now and they've said you win by touching the corners, so there are your rules

won't say anything else about SD as if I understand correctly then my American counterparts won't see it for a few hours yet
