Bullshit About Movies, Release Dates, and Box Office (PLEASE READ FIRST POST)

Xfear, I hope you read the following, because guess the fuck what?

Donnie Darko came on Starz last night and I figured what the hell, that I'd give it another shot. And I'm glad I did, because I absolutely LOVED it.

However, come to find out, the version I watched was the Director's Cut, not the original. The original was the one I saw back when I was in high school, and the one that left a bad taste in my mouth all this time about the movie (though that can most likely be attributed to the fact that my taste in film back then was shit).

Anyway, got a question for you X if you read this... which do you prefer, the original or Director's Cut of Donnie Darko?

I plan on checking out the original in the next couple of weeks myself so I can properly compare the two. But for now, I couldn't have enjoyed the Director's Cut more, man. I thought it was a BRILLIANT film and I'm becoming more of a fan of Richard Kelly with each passing day.

I finally watched Charlie Bartlett in its entirety. I love Robert Downey Jr and Kat Dennings but for some reason I always had my doubts about this movie. Fortunately for me this movie was a very pleasant surprise. Downey was terrific as always, minus that shitfest known as The Singing Detective. Kat Dennings was good, at the very least she is very nice to look at and has a very good singing voice and I learned that I like Anton Yelchin, better known as Chekov from Star Trek.

Yelchin was excellent as the rebellious yet very intelligent teenager named Charlie Bartlett. I was very impressed by Yelchin and am really looking forward to what he can do in the future. For some reason Kat Dennings impresses me as an actress. She is neither excellent nor bad but a very solid actress time and time again. She is extremely type cast as the attractive yet weird teenage girl, but I always say if you are good at something then why stop. The interesting thing about this movie is that both Dennings and Yelchin overshadowed Downey who is my personal favorite actor going today. Downey was very good as the dunk father/principle who did not know what to do but at times he seemed as if he was just phoning in his role. Regardless, he and the rest were all very good and the movie overall impressed the hell out of me. Not a classic but a nice film to watch sometime.

I have been meaning to watch Repo: The Genetic Opera for awhile now and just did that. Not a terrible movie but not all that great either. The songs were decent but the singers were not. They really brought down the music side of things. I wasn't a fan of most of the acting either, maybe that is because of Paris Hilton. I did love Bill Mosley's character. He was very entertaining as he usually is.

The premise of the film as a whole was very interesting. I personally have never seen a movie with the story of Repo, at least not that I can remember. I enjoyed the story and can see all the comparisons that the new Repo Men movie drew. I cannot compare the two since I have not seen Repo Men but they obviously have very similar stories. Like I said not the greatest movie I have ever seen but not the worst either, definitely worth a watch.

I watched this absolutely incredible movie last night called "Dare". Please check out the trailer of it below:

That trailer doesn't give the film any justice, to be completely honest. The movie is ultimately about teen loneliness, and it is the best movie I've ever seen on the subject.

Zach Gilford is solidifying himself as someone you have to consider right now the best actor alive under the age of 30 (guys like Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Emile Hirsch are also in that argument of course), and this performance, which ranks right up there with Christoph Waltz in Inglourious Basterds as my favorite performance of 2009, proves that to be a fact. He made the Johnny character one of the most complicated and complex characters I've ever seen in a "teen movie." I recommend this movie highly, if only for his performance. Emmy Rossum as the main character was quite adorable, and she did a good job, while Ashley Springer as Ben could have been portrayed a little bit better I thought. He was just too out there and forward, but I guess it made some sense since the director's ultimate goal was to show how childish Ben and Alexa were in the final act.

Anyways, check it out if you have the means. It's a very, very good movie, and one I think most here would enjoy.

Awesome, glad to know you dug it this time around. While I realize the film has a few flaws (the theatrical cut that is), it will always be one of my favorite films simply because when I first saw it when it first came out it just blew my mind as a teenager and pretty much made me fall in love with the art of filmmaking forever, before that I had never really thought of movies as an art form like literature or painting, but Donnie Darko lit the spark for my lifelong love of that art. I could literally watch that film every day for the rest of my life and be perfectly content.

However, come to find out, the version I watched was the Director's Cut, not the original. The original was the one I saw back when I was in high school, and the one that left a bad taste in my mouth all this time about the movie (though that can most likely be attributed to the fact that my taste in film back then was shit).

Director's Cut for sure, though I'm such a filmsnob that by default I almost always would pick a director's cut over a theatrical cut simply because it's more true to what the actual director's vision than the theatrical cut usually is. Theatrical cut is still absolutely brilliant though, and it was the theatrical cut that I fell in love with. I can't tell you how damned excited I was when years later after all of the love on the web and around the world for the film they released the Director's Cut into theaters a few years back.

I plan on checking out the original in the next couple of weeks myself so I can properly compare the two. But for now, I couldn't have enjoyed the Director's Cut more, man. I thought it was a BRILLIANT film and I'm becoming more of a fan of Richard Kelly with each passing day.

He's definitely got a very creative and unique (and obviously talented) mind, Southland Tales was a very good film that gets better with each viewing as well. I haven't seen his latest film The Box yet, I've heard mixed things about it, anyone else see it?

Oh and I'll definitely have to check out that Dare film now. The trailer gives me a Bret Easton Ellis kind of vibe.

Watched some random movies whilst trying to fall asleep last night. "Layer Cake" with Daniel Craig was pretty good. Mostly about drugs and killing people and such, it was quite entertaining. Actually the first Craig movie I've seen and can see why he's become a pretty big star. Also, the fact that the only nudity was within the first 2 minutes was very disappointing.

Also watched "See No Evil" starring the one and only Kane. It appears it got absolute shit reviews, but I didn't think it was that bad. At least I got to see Kane creep around and pull people's eyes out. Always good stuff. I do have to say that he no selled one of the axe shots and the doulbe chokeslam near the end was a bit sloppy.

Just finished watching Blood Simple by the Coen Brothers. It was there first film and it was really interesting to see that not much has changed from their early work in 80's through now. Sure the production value has gone up but really they still use the same tricks as they did in 1985, which is nice to see.

The movie overall was really not all that impressive but when comparing to the movies they made in the 90's it really is no surprise why I like them so much. Frances Mcdormand was awesome. She is probably my favorite female actress and even in this early role she was very good. The rest of the acting was solid as well. Nothing to bad to complain about.

The violence was Coen brothers to a T. They use the same sort of blood tricks in all their movies through the 90's and I still like it more then anything else I have seen. To me it looks more realistic but not in a horror movie type of way. The Coen's are genius's when it comes to violence in their films.

The story was okay. I didn't wow me or anything and is probably the weakest Coen Brother movie beside the Ladykillers but that is okay considering it was one of their first movies and they obviously got better because of it. Overall it is an enjoyable film, at least for me but it isn't all that memorable either.

I was bored, and went to go see Date Night earlier today. This movie wasn't as terrible as I thought it would be, but it wasn't good either. Steve Carell and Tina Fey are kind of funny as a couple, but the story is even more ridiculous than I originally thought it would be. There are a bunch of moments in this movie that made me scratch my head in disbelief, and you can see everything coming from a mile away. This movie is just basically about a dull and lifeless married couple who go on a wild adventure one night. I wish I would've waited to see this one on DVD.

I actually completely agree. I felt as though Tina Fey and Steve Carell had no chemistry what so ever. It actually makes sense seeing as they are both dominate personalities on their respective shows and that usually tends to lead chemistry when faced with sharing the spotlight with another actor like that.

The first half of the movie bored me to no end. But as soon as they met James Franco and Mila Kunis's characters I began to enjoy the movie a little more. Franco was funny as usual and Kunis was enjoyable for the most part. The best part of the whole film was the cab driver, that guy is hilarious. The movie also could have used more Ray Liotta and William Fichtner. Overall, a tad boring and ridiculous but a decent little movie.
6.5/7.

Yeah, the part with Mila and Franco was hilarious. It was pretty much the only part in the film where I was laughing very hard. I also wish we would've seen more of Liotta because he seemed to have a interesting character. Like I said earlier, this movie was ridiculous, but I kind of expected that when I saw the trailer. Still, I guess you can say it was a decent movie.

I just finished watching the Slammin Salmon, the newest Broken Lizard film. I really enjoyed it. It's the same old crude, over the top comedy that these guys always do but that's what I like when watching their movies so I won't complain. It was similar to Waiting in location and premise but it still had some really big differences.

The acting was about as good as the acting for a Broken Lizards film is expected to be. The Broken Lizard crew was their usual, raunchy selves and I enjoyed every minute of it. Lance Henriksen, Michael Clark Duncan, Will Forte, Jim Gaffigan, and Morgan Fairchild also all gave very funny performances.

The story was a little strange at first but in time made more sense, or at least as much sense as it could make. I am not sure yet but it may be their best effort in regards to a story yet. Kevin Heffernan did a very good job directing this film since it was his first. Overall I thought it was a very solid comedy and if you are into over the top comedy or the Broken Lizard guys then this is definitely worth a watch.

I went to see Kick-Ass earlier today. This movie was a lot more vulgar than I originally expected, but man did this movie make me laugh hard. The story was nothing different, but the acting from almost everyone was very good. This movie had some good characters (both "superhero" and regular person).

I was surprised Nicholas Cage actually did a good job in this movie because he has been doing a bunch of shit over the years, and this is one of the very few watchable films I can remember him being in. I'm on the fence about The Hit Girl character. While she was probably the most entertaining person in the movie, it was kind of weird seeing a young girl be involved in some rough fight scenes, and it was even more bizarre to hear some of the language she used. McLovin wasn't as bad as I thought he would be. Although, unlike the other superheroes, he was only entertaining as Red Mist. When he was his regular self, I just saw a guy who is still trying to live off of the 15 minutes of fame he had in Superbad.

Bro, we really need to stop watching the same movie, lol. I pretty much agree with everything you said. Kick-Ass surprised the hell out of me. I really thought it was going to be garbage but it wasn't. In fact I liked it quiet a bit,

Now, I keep hearing that the movie was vulgar. My legit question is this. What exactly was it that made this movie vulgar? The little girl saying cunt? I am not a big fan of children cursing but the thing is they do in real life so why should it be a big deal on film? I had no problem with her saying "cunt" once a "fuck" a few times. It was a lot better then I initially thought. From all the hype it seemed like she would be cursing every other word, which she didn't. I did not consider Kick-Ass to be vulgar, especially with movies like Role Models out there.

As for the acting, it was better then I thought. Nicholas Cage is an actor I really do not enjoy watching. However, I loved his character. Finally, he played someone that I could actually see him as to an extent. He did an awesome job. The little girl did a decent job with what she was given. Kick-Ass was pretty solid and probably put on my favorite role in the movie. Red Mist was a bit obnoxious but overall I enjoyed the character. It could have been better casted but Mintz did an alright job. And Mark Strong was good as the villain. I like him more and more every time I watch a movie with him in it.

The story was good. I thought it would be cheesy but it did a very good job of mixing comedy and action. The shots were interesting and I really enjoyed them. Especially the scene with Big Daddy at the Lumber store. The fight scenes were choreographed well and looked good. Overall the movie was very enjoyable and I am happy I actually decided to see it. This is the second movie that has surprised the hell out of me this year. The first being The Crazies.

Don't get me wrong, I knew this movie would be vulgar and raunchy, but I just didn't expect Hit Girl to be so extreme. Although, as I said earlier, she was the most entertaining character in the movie. This film did surprise the hell out of me because I thought it would be garbage. The characters were awesome, and there was a nice little love story also.

As far as The Crazies go, I liked that movie. For some reason I thought it would be the best horror film I ever saw, but It wasn't, but that's mainly because I watched the trailer so many times, and hyped the hell out this movie in my own mind.

I really didn't think Hit Girl was all that bad. Before the movie came out people were hyping it up as if she was going to be using "cunt" and "fuck" as if it were a valley girl saying like. She was honestly no worse then the character Ronnie Shields from Role Models. His character was actually much more vulgar not that Hit Girl wasn't. I just don't see her being that vulgar in comparison to some other characters I have seen before.

As for the Crazies. I had little expectations for that movie and was pretty blown away by it. It was a lot better then I anticipated. Most likely because it wasn't as gory as I expected and played more on the psychological aspect, which was very refreshing to see in an industry that depends almost completely on tits and blood. It is kind of funny how it wasn't as good as you expected and was way better then I expected. It is always interesting to see other peoples reaction to movies.

Just saw Kick-Ass myself, and I fucking LOVED it! It was really like watching a two-hour nerdgasm. It was a lot less comedy than I expected and more superhero, and I actually preferred it that way. It was just a funny superhero movie, featuring great fight scenes, interesting characters, and an experience that just had me leaving the theater feeling very, very satisfied. I recommend it to everyone.

I watched Death At Funeral(2010) today, and man was it a funny movie. This film had a very good cast. I haven't seen Danny Glover in anything for a long time, but he was easily one of the best characters in this film. The humor wasn't as vulgar as I thought it would be, and that was just fine. I also thought Tracy Morgan was hilarious in this one. I'm surprised to say that because usually I can't stand Morgan.

A warning to everyone who wants to see this film........the scene where Morgan gets his hand caught under Danny glover while he's trying to take a crap is a lot more gross than what you will see in the trailer.

Well if it really is a shot for shot remake of the original like I have heard then I would fully expect the toilet hand scene to be gross. The original movies scene was pretty gross but also funny. I really didn't expect them to shoot the scene like that. However, I am still skeptical of this remake since I loved the original but I may still see this movie. I don't know yet.

Also, I love Danny Glover. The most recent movie I can really think of with him in it was Saw and he was very good in it. He is also in some movie titled Midnight Train or something like that, not to be confused with the horror movie Midnight Meat Train. Either way my point is he is a very good actor and I wish he was in more films.

Yeah, I remember Glover being in Saw. He hasn't too many big roles in a long time, so that's why it's hard for me to remember which movies he's been in. I also remember Glover being in Blindness. That movie wasn't as good as I thought it would be, but it's still a watchable film.

I've never seen the original Death At Funeral, but I plan on watching some time soon because I'm anxious to see how good that movie is.

I saw The Losers on Sunday and I was very pleased. As I predicted and stated in the coming attractions thread it was just a fun action/comedy movie. I never read the comic but I can't think it deviated greatly from it at all. It was well acted, shot, and the soundtrack was solid. Now to get more in depth.

The actors did a good job. Jeffery Dean Morgan was good in the role as Clay. He has that hardened, war vet look already and definitely came through in his role. However, he also had a fun side that came out in his dry humor. Idris Elba was also good as Roque. He came off very shady and badass which if you have seen the film then you will know he did a good job with. Columbus Short and Oscar Jaenada were solid in their roles. Jaenada didn't have to do much more then look like a quiet badass and use good facial expressions, something he did very well. My favorite character was Chris Evans. He was extremely funny and has inspired me to buy the Petunias t-shirt he wore if I can ever find it. He played the sarcastic, smart ass, nerdy technician very well even though his biceps said otherwise. Zoe Saldana was alright, however she was probably the weakest link in the cast. She is still hot though so that is a plus. And Jason Patric was very funny as Max.

This movie gets my recommendation. While I know not everyone will enjoy this movie I certainly did. If you like action movies with a comic book twist and a good soundtrack then this movie is right up your ally. And if you enjoy smart asses and Journey once again this movie is right for you.

All right, homeys, the time is almost upon us. The Nightmare on Elm Street reboot drops this Friday. I'll be posting a Bar Room hype thread, but, I encourage all of the regular posters in this thread (jmt, x, Jon, HHHKing) to post their initial thoughts on the film if they plan seeing it. I'm ducking out of work early on Friday so I can catch an afternoon showing .

Norcs is probably the only person who gives a damn, so this is addressed to him: Dude, I brought the Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut a couple of weeks ago, finally got around to watching it yesterday and I fucking LOVED it.

Shit, I loved the original, but this one kicks so much more ass. Sibylla getting a much larger role, her son getting an awesome/touching sub-plot, the decapitation of that prick Raynald, and most importantly... that EPIC sword fight between Balian and Guy after Balian surrenders Jerusalem to the Muslims. Why the fuck was that ever cut? It was honestly one of the best sword fights I've ever seen in any movie, ever.

But yeah, man... I never would have spent $25 for this DVD-set if it weren't for your enthusiasm over it, so thanks. It was worth every penny. Like I said... I saw the original a couple of times around 5 years ago, and loved that one, but this one completely blows it out of the water and you see what a miscarriage of justice the original film was given by the studio network.

Oh, and for everyone else, like Tdigs I will also see Nightmare on Elm Street sometime this weekend, so I'll make sure to pop back in this thread and give my thoughts on it as well. :)

:worship: <3 :worship: <3 :worship: <3

I am so pumped you loved it so much, man. That fucking shit is beyond fucking epic and awesome. It was already my favorite movie, and it was made sooooo much better man. The development at the beginning with Godfrey, and Balion's wife made you feel more strongly for them. Also made it more worth it when he fucking hooks up that guy in the metalworking tent. I enjoyed that they expanded that huge viking dude's character, even if it was just a little. He was always one of my favorite characters, and I was saddened by how little he was in the original cut.

The side plot with Sybilla and her son was pretty amazing, along with revealing that Guy was even more of a fucker, in that he didnt have any feelings for Sybilla at all.

Man, when that sword fight happened at the end....it was SO good, that I had to check the original cut to make sure it wasn't there...becuase it was SO epic, and SO badass, and so fucking final, and good, I just could not comprehend it not being in there....and of course, it wasnt.

What in the FUCK was the studio thinking, cutting that out? Really?

Still my favorite, by leaps and bounds now. Anyone who is ANY sort of fan of this genre REALLY should give this directors cut a look.

Well I watched three movies yesterday, so I will try to review them all right now.

Funny People
This is what I guess would be considered a comedy from Judd Apatow and company. It stars Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, and features some supporting roles from people you would expect in a Apatow flick (I.E. Jonah Hill and Leslie Mann).

I found this to be probably my least favorite Judd Apatow movie. I think some it has to do with the fact that I am tired of seeing Seth Rogen kind of playing the same character. He is pretty much a "lovable loser" comedian taken under the wing of comedian with a life threatening illness George Simmons (Sandler).

I started the movie with pretty high hopes, but it just really felt like two and a half hours of filler to me. There was some interesting parts such as the fight on the lawn with Eric Bana, but that was the only real part that captured my attention. Towards the end, the looked to be some conflict, but as suddenly as it started, it was over. I was just left sitting there saying "Wait...what?" Not a very enjoyable movie for me.

Observe and Report

Yet another movie staring Seth Rogen. In this one he plays Head of Mall Security Ronnie Barnhardt. I had heard nothing but bad things about this movie. I sort of enjoyed the first twenty minutes, but then it went downhill in a hurry. Take a look at some plot holes.
1. If he started smacking police officers with a flashlight, why was he not arrested for assault?

2. If he assaulted the crack heads with a baton, why was he not arrested?

3. He had pretty much taken the mall hostage, and they let him come back in there later on in the movie?

4. He is only an innocent bystander when flashed, but he chases him down and shoots him...and is rewarded with his job back?
I am not telling you to stay away from this movie...but I would.

The Goods: Live Hard Sell Hard
This movie starring Jeremy Piven was probably the most enjoyable I watched yesterday. Piven plays a "Mercenary" car salesman named Don Ready who sells cars at all costs. He had a nice little team with him consisting of Ving Rhames, David Koechner, and Kathryn Hahn. I figured that the movie would be one of those that showed all the good parts in the preview, but basically the entire trailer was shown in about the first 5 minutes. There was, however, a nice little cameo from Will Ferrell. When you add Ed Helms to the mix, it made this movie an enjoyable experience for me.

Final Analysis:
Funny People - Skip it.
Observe and Report - Skip it.
The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard - See it.

I saw A Nightmare On Elm Street(2010) earlier today, and man was I disappointed. I don't think this film is a terrible as some people have made it out to be, but there was nothing really special about it either. I found this film to be bland, and the deaths weren't as creative as I originally thought they would be.

To me, this movie just looked like another generic Hollywood horror film, and I'll even go as far as saying this movie had a PG-13 feel to it. If you take away the occasional bloodshed, this movie was not Gorey at all. Freddy Krueger was done in a decent way. I'll always think Robert Englund was the true Krueger, but Jackie Earle Haley did an okay job.

Also, way too much time was spent on explaining the origins of Krueger. It wasn't neccessary to spend so much time explaining how Krueger turned into this supernatural killer because he is a well known horror film icon by many people. TDigs hit the nail on the head when explaining this in The Official Movie Review thread.

I was very disappointed by this film because when I watched the trailers, I thought I was going to see something completely different, but boy was I wrong. This film will probably be released as an unrated DVD, and will be shortly forgotten about after that, and I just know there's going to be a sequel made because it's easy to tell when you see the ending.
