Bullshit About Movies, Release Dates, and Box Office (PLEASE READ FIRST POST)

The amount of negative reviews that are popping up from users on sites like Metacritic.com make me worried for the future of mankind. Apparently, if you have to actually pay attention to a film for the entire duration and actually listen to what the actors are saying, the film is automatically "pretentious talky nonsense". Then they make some smart assed remark about how good The Matrix was and go back to watching a nonstop montage of explosions and buildings exploding whilst *********ing. I assume that what these cretins do with their time.

This movie was great. The opening scene doesnt make sense. Nolan does not walk us through the movie, holding our hands and gently cooing encouragement in our ears while we try and comprehend whats going on. It doesn't take a genius to work it out. It intersperses action into what is essentially a philosophical movie, which somehow made people think that they were going in to watch The A-Team or something with cats running headfirst into walls. I assume these sorts of movies make the top 10 lists of these "reviewers". Sorry Tbone69 if I don't find your opinion as valid as my own.

See this movie. It's good. But I swear, if someone dares saying "The Matrix did this way fucking better. Special Effects were better too" in this thread, I will come at you. With everthing that I have. You cunt.

Just got home from The Other Guys. Incredibly funny in that stupid humor sort of way but really lacked any depth in its story. It was far to jumpy and random but the over the top comedy made up for it for me. I am a fan of stupid humor and that is exactly what Will Ferrill does a great job with. I am not a fan of Mark Whalberg but he made me laugh a lot in this movie because of his tough guy persona. Samuel L. Jackson was the best part of this film, it is just a shame he isn't in the movie more. Not a horrible film but not something you need to run out and see for full price.

I thought The Other Guys was okay. It was funny, but I just felt like Mark Whalberg was out of place in this movie. He just didn't seem to fit in with the other characters. Eva Mendes was eye candy as usual, and she really didn't do anything worth remembering. Anyone could've played her role. Samuel L. Jackson and The Rock were hilarious, but I just wish we could've seen more of them. I wasn't to crazy about the story, and I really didn't like the ending that much.

Man oh man oh man. Scott Pilgrim vs. The World was absolutely fucking fantastic. The movie appealed to me and my interests in a way no other film has ever done before. It got all the references, all the musical cues, all the shout outs, everything completely correct. It was damn entertaining the whole way through and full of the nerdiest mark out moments you could ask for.

The one thing that really struck me was that it was exactly like how I'd expect a no More Heroes movie adaptation to be like. The filmmakers were obviously inspired by that game. It really seemed like a Lighter and Softer No More Heroes. It was completely over the top, there were 8-bit sounds sprinkled throughout the whole thing, the more important characters all go to the bathroom at some point, enemies explode in showers of coins when vanquished...Hell, the Big Bad even looked like Travis Touchdown and used a beam katana! There may never be a No More Heroes adaptation, but I don't know if there needs to be with this on the loose.

It's my favorite movie now, supplanting The Producers (2005). Yes, I know, my taste in films suck, etc. I don't care. Scott Pilgrim was just a blissful experience for the nerd-types like myself. Highly, highly recommended.

Plus, Mary Elizabeth Winstead is just gorgeous as Ramona Flowers.

In the Summer Coming Attractions thread, I said Scott Pilgrim VS The World would either be terrible or very fun to watch. Well, I saw this movie recently, and man did I have a good time! I usually enjoy Michael Cera's films because he can always be funny playing the up-tight/nerdy guy. The story was good, and all of the fight scenes were very entertaining. From looking at the trailer, I thought the visuals would make this film look corny, but they actually helped highlight what was going on throughout the movie. Scott Pilgrim Vs The World had a great cast of characters, and while I could see the ending coming from a mile away, I thought it was done well.

This film has definitely been one of my favorites this year, but so far, Inception is still my #1

Today I watched a movie I have been wanting to see for a long time: Black Dynamite. I went in expecting a cheesy, fun sendup of blaxploitation movies, and I most certainly was not disappointed. Everything from the special effects failures, to the stock footage, to the characters, to the cheesy dialogue was spot-on. It was hilarious in its over-the-top-ness, and how everything was played with a straight face. Michael Jai White's performance was tremendous, and the final fight scene was brilliantly funny and has to be seen to be believed.

I loved it.

Doc, you have officially experienced the magic that is Edgar Wright. I haven't seen Scott Pilgrim but I would definitely recommend Edgar's other stuff to you, especially if you haven't seen Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz.

The industry could use more directors like him who actually care about what they do. And it helps that he genuinely loves films and unlike the Michael Bays of the world, loves films that aren't his own.

Finally got to see Piranha 3D and I must say, it was the most fun I have had all summer at the movies. I love when movies don't take themselves seriously, especially films that are so over the top such as Piranha. I am a fan of the original 1978 film, so needless to say I was really excited when I learned of this remake. That mixed with a great cast and the direction of Alexandre Aja got me really hyped for it.

Piranha 3D was extremely gory and it was so awesome. The effects were great in regards to the blood and gore. The scenes were gruesome but really fun to watch because of how ridiculous some of the kills were. The story wasn't all that bad either, as far as major release creature features go, it had a very fun script and writing. The dialogue was so funny, especially the stuff Jerry O'Connell said.

That brings me to the cast. Elisabeth Shue was decent but a little over dramatic at points. Adam Scott was hilarious with his dead pan style of delivery. Ving Rhames was such a badass, the film needed more of him. Christopher Lloyd was a perfect doctor. It was awesome to see Richard Dreyfuss in this film singing "show me the way to go home", awesome homage to Jaws. And Jeffy O'Connell was funny as hell in his, Girls Gone Wild creator, role.

Overall, I loved the film. It was so much fun to watch. It didn't take itself all the serious which made it that much better to watch. The blood and body count was good and the kills were all fun to watch. I love creature features and this one has jumped to the top of my list.

I just saw Piranha 3D also, and I sure did have a fun time. This had to be by far one of the most gory movies I've ever seen. Pretty much all of the Piranha kills were as gruesome as gruesome can be. The story was decent enough, and the acting was solid. I marked out for Ving Rhames and Christopher Llyod, because they have always been two of my favorite actors. I also tend to enjoy movies that don't take themselves seriously sometimes, jon. This film kind of reminds me of Snakes On A Plane. Except Snakes On A Plane wasn't as over the top as this one. The 3D was awesome, and I had fun throughout the whole movie.

So this Friday Avatar is going to be re-released in theaters, but it's only going to be on a limited basis. Avatar is only going to be re-released in 3D an Imax 3D(you would think this film has made enough money already) and there will be additional nine minutes added on. I liked Avatar, and I thought it was a nice film, but I probably won't go see this again. While I did like this film, I also thought it was overrated. Yeah, the special effects were pretty good, but everything else just felt so generic to me. Oh, and who ever came up with the name unobtanium needs to be struck in the head with a blunt object. Seriously, everyone is going to war over something called unobtanium? Really? Nine more minutes and 3D just won't be enough for me to watch this again.

I just posted this in Xfear's thread and figure I'd come share it here as well:

I finally got around to watching Rob Zombie's Halloween 2 this weekend, and man... I fucking HATED it. I remember you had some pretty high praise for it when it was first released, and maybe I would have felt the same way watching it at a movie theater, but fuck... on my couch, in my home all by myself, I was so extremely disappointed with the outcome of this.

I thought the hospital scene was terrific, but once it turned out to be a dream, the movie went way down hill from there. No more suspenseful moments, just ridiculous ghost and annoying bitches whining. That's all the movie was for me. There were some decent killings past that, but still... severely disappointed overall, like I said.

All that said, you can still sense how great of a director Rob Zombie is going to become. I just think he ought to either direct other people's scripts, or have his re-written by a professional, because the dialogue and everything else in his films are becoming a bit repetitive.

Just curious what you all feel about that last paragraph there... just how good of a director will Rob Zombie be?

Like I said, I think the guy has potential to be great. However, as I feel with M. Night Shyamalan, for that to happen he needs to start directing other people's scripts. Every movie Rob has directed so far has been revolved around rednecks and young girls who just annoy the fuck out of you. Those are his protagonist and antagonist in every film he's done thus far. It's getting ridiculous.

Thankfully he's not doing Halloween 3, so it's going to be interesting to see what he does from this point on. Wiki is listing Tyrannosaurus Rex and The Blob as his next projects. Rex is supposedly about evil bikers or some shit, so again... most likely rednecks.

And Rob remaking The Blob (if it's true) will make or break his career, I think. The original Blob is one of the greatest, most popular horror films from the 50's. Rob cannot fuck it up, otherwise he's really going to be looked at as a joke from that point on. Hopefully he doesn't set it in some redneck town. In fact, I would like to see it set in the 50's; it would be a nice change to these fucking remakes to actually place it in the era it was originally produced.

Just curious what you all feel about that last paragraph there... just how good of a director will Rob Zombie be?

I think if anyone can revive the American Horror film genre, it's Rob Zombie, I loved what he did with Devils Rejects and his Holloween remake, had no interest in seeing the second however, and I think he is well on his way the guy knows how to film terror, but as you said he needs to widen his horizen and step out of his safety zone, also I would like to see him focus on stuff that is original and fresh, as I beleive that's what is killing American Horror movies these days

I'm curious to see what Tyrannosaurus Rex really ends up becoming, if it is infact about some redneck biker gang I'm likely to pass, but if it's something that is a complete 180 from what he's done so far and I may give it a shot, as for the Blob, great concept and I'm sure he'll do a terrific job with it though I'd rather Hollywood step away from the danm remakes for a fucking minute and try and at least try and come up with something new

As far Zombie's directing career goes I could see him ranking up there with the likes of George A. Romero & John Carpenter someday down the road if he continues to make good shit, he's already got a pretty decent cult following

Resident Evil: Afterlife was shit for the most part. It just lacked anything interesting and ended up being really bland. I loved the original Resident Evil, but the new films just haven't brought anything new to the table, in fact each film is getting worse, though I would put 4 ahead of 3. The characters were so shallow and just done very poorly. Kim Coates has a lot of range as an actor and this movie just did not do him justice. The only real redeeming part of the film was the big ass dude with the axe/hammer thing. That dude was awesome and had a decent scene. The ending was so underwhelming and not exciting at all, and the film just kept going on instead of ending. Worst of all is that they obviously have a plan for a fifth movie. I like Paul Anderson, but he dropped the ball on this one.

So I found myself watching Nowhere the other night at like 1 in the morning, and was really drawn in. I watched something like the second half of it, which was pretty fantastic. Definetly one of the stranger movies I've seen. A lot of you freaks surely loved it as well. Any movie with a guy named Handjob is sure to be decent, at the very least. We all know that.

Also, watched the end of Cloverfield the other day. It's shit.

I've been wanting to see this for quite a while, but unfortunately... there's never been a DVD release of it. The only way to watch it is to download it (which I won't do), or be lucky enough to catch it one night on IFC like you apparently did. Hopefully I'll eventually see it though. The director of it did a film called Mysterious Skin that was simply incredible, and Nowhere to me has always looked like the other masterpiece in his work, but like I said... I just haven't been fortunate enough to catch it yet.

But yeah... everybody reading this, check out Mysterious Skin if you can. It's a heart wrenching story, but one I think most people should see at least once.

I have to agree with you here, jon. I had high hopes for this movie, because all of the trailers looked great, but Afterlife just fell flat for me. This movie opened with a bang, but everything else after that was kind of boring. The acting from almost everyone wasn't bad, but I thought the guy who played Albert Wesker was terrible. And yeah, the big guy with axe/hammer weapon was a bad ass. That scene was awesome. The 3D effects here were cool, but overall, this was a very weak film. I usually have good things to say about the Resident Evil franchise, because as far as movies based on video games go, I feel as if this series isn't too bad. I really liked Resident Evil, I thought Apocalypse sucked, and Extinction was okay. Still, there have been worse movies made that were based on video games. Both Street Fighter films are a prime example of this. Also, you can clearly tell by the ending that a fifth movie will be made. If this does happen, I hope that it will be the last Resident Evil film, because it's about time for this series to end.

If you're expecting Nowhere to be anything like Mysterious Skin you're going to be disappointed man, very very different kind of film. Great, great film though, I'm not too big of a fan of Gregg Araki as a few others like TDigs are, but Nowhere is truly a great, great film and you should definitely keep your eyes peeled for the next time it airs on IFC, well worth watching, damn good film that combines Luis Bunuel-surrealism with almost Bret Easton Ellis' like representations of the slacker/"doom" generation of the 90s, though the characters are probably more likable for the most part.

James Duval is awesome in it as well, it still shocks me he never became a big star.

Anyways....

Watched Mike Judge's last film, Extract last night and really, really enjoyed it. Jason Bateman is probably one of my favorite comedic actors working today, and Ben Affleck was actually damn good in the film as the slacker druggie buddy, really just a relaxed and different performance from Affleck that you just don't see from the guy anymore. Throw in other great comedy actors like Kristen Wiig, David Koechner and JK Simmons and the results are bound to be good, which they were. Damn funny movie, just as you'd expect from Judge, there were several legit laugh out loud moments on my part. The only thing I didn't really like was how quickly Wiig cheated on Bateman and just kept cheating on him while Bateman struggled with even the idea of cheating, really made me strongly dislike Wiig and her character until the ending of the film. After some thought though I realized the message there was just that everyone makes mistakes, even those who love each other, but mistakes aren't important if you really love someone and really want it to work. Sweet ending to a great comedy, very glad I watched this last night, strongly recommended to everyone, probably around a 4/5 rating on my part, maybe even higher. Really one of Mike Judge's best films, maybe even his best (next to Office Space of course).

Went and saw The Town tonight. I have to say I really enjoyed it for the most part. Ben Affleck did a very good job directing this film, he got some great performances out of his actors. Of course Affleck did his part. I thought he was really good, and have found myself rather impressed with him as of late. Jeremy Renner is fucking amazing. I am simply in love with his acting and thought he did a superb job. Jon Hamm was such a cunt, and was a terrific bad good guy. Also, Pete Postlethwaite was very good in his small role. He is a very good actor who is overlooked a lot.

I also just finished Bully. Wow, a very brutal film at times. I really enjoyed it for the most part but some of it was very intense, not because it was graphic but because of how realistic it came across. I was a little skeptical of Nick Stahl as the bully, I think he is an awesome actor but I had trouble seeing him as this intense of a character. I was pleasantly surprised and thought he did a very good job. It was tough to watch Stahl treat these people like shit, yet it was still hard to watch as them killed him in such a brutal way. Very good film, which brought out a lot of emotion.

I pretty much agree with everything you said here. Bully is a very good film, but it tends to get bashed by some critics. There's a lot of nitpicking as far as the nudity, sex, and rape scene goes, but I still enjoy this film. There's a little bit of dark comedy thrown in here and there, and the acting from everyone was solid. Nick Stahl did do a good job as the Bully. He was evil, but at the same time, you did feel bad for the guy when he was beat to death at the end. That entire scene was so graphic and violent. Bully was a good film, and I wish it was more well received by the majority of critics.

I usually don't get into Matt Damon's movies, but The Adjustment Bureau looks like it could be worth watching.

Matt Damon will play David Norris, a former Fordham University basketball player and charismatic United States Congressman who seems destined for national political stardom. He meets a beautiful ballet dancer named Elise Sellas, played by Blunt, only to find that strange circumstances keep them from becoming romantically involved. Norris discovers forces are at work to keep them apart, and he peels the layers to find out why. The action takes place in various places in Manhattan.

The Adjustment Bureau is a science fiction/romance film, and the story here seems to be something unique. The premise here kind of reminds me of The Butterfly Effect. I enjoyed the first film, and the production values for The Adjustment Bureau look a lot better, so I'm going to go see this one when it hits theaters March 4, 2011.

I saw The Social Network last night and really enjoyed it. Jesse Eisenberg is one of the best kept secrets in Hollywood right now, and Justin Timberlake is incredibly underrated as an actor. Also, Andrew Garfield gives me hope for the new Spiderman reboot.

The movie was pretty good and definitely a must see for those of the Internet Age. I don't know how accurate the story is in regards to the actual events but if the movie is anything like the actual making of Facebook then jesus christ. I reallye enjoyed the way they cut from the current law suits to the events and actions that resulted in them. Also, I can see why Mark Zuckerberg was so pissed about the movie. The filmmakers made him look like such a dick throughout most of the film, though they did give him a few redeeming factors. Overall, it was a tremendous film, maybe not an Oscar winner, but it will probably become the defining film of the Internet Age.

Went and saw Jackass 3D. Entertaining, but not nearly as funny as the first 2 films. I am easily amused by the Jackass crews antics. The shit they do is funny and leaves you scratching your head as to why they would do such things. The only thing I can really say is that I hope they get paid well for doing some of those stunts, because I wouldn't allow poop to be on me for any amount of money. I am also a big fan of Johnny Knoxville, Chris Pontius and Ryan Dunn.

Like I said, the stunts were comical but not nearly as laugh out loud worthy as the first two films. There are a few stunts that are beyond hilarious, one such stunt including about nine little people in a bar, one of the best things the Jackass guys have ever done. The problem is none of their material is all that fresh. We get the same old shit stunts, we get the same old Bam is scared of snakes bit, and we get the same old obligatory tooth being pulled out. However, we also get to see the Ryan Dunn snake river redemption, something I have been waiting 10 years to see. The only thing that could have been better would have been seeing Knoxville try to jump the reservoir again. Jackass 3D also had, and I find it weird saying this, a very touching homage to the Jackass moments of the past. It was cool to see all the old stunts, put to a good song. A real trip down memory lane.

Jackass 3D is funny, but I would say wait till it is cheaper. The 3D is alright but not spectacular, though you have never really seen 3D until you see a ***** fly in slow motion and hit someone in the face.

http://www.thewrap.com/deal-central...-play-uncle-ben-sonys-spider-man-reboot-22295

So it looks like Mary Jane won't be making any appearances in the Spider-Man reboot. I'm not too upset about this. This a reboot, so you have to expect some changes. I like Emma Stone. She's not a bad actress, and she's easy on the eyes. I really hope she can do a good job with the Gwen character. Also, if it does happen, I think Martin Sheen would be great a choice for Uncle Ben, but when it comes to Sally Field, I'm not excited at all. I've never been a big fan Field, but she's a big name, so I wouldn't be surprised if she played Aunt May.

And here's a new film with Anthony Hopkins..................

The Rite centers on a disillusioned young American who studied to become a priest. In the Vatican, he learns to carry out exorcisms and finds his faith through encounters with demons.

I usually don't get into exorcism films, but this one looks damn good. The Rite looks like it can be very creepy, and there will surely be some spook moments here. Anthony Hopkins is apart of this film, so that can always be a good thing. I can't wait for this film. The Rite hits theaters on January 28, 2011.

One of the worst ideas in recent movie industry. They're rebooting a series that was actually really good. The only reason the 3rd one was so bad, besides the complaints about Topher Grace, is that they knew everyone was gone after it, so they wrote too much stuff into it. Now they're rebooting it, and judging by the main cast I'd say they're going teen heartthrob with it. They are going to bring the Spider-Man trilogy down to the level of Twilight. I am officially saddened.

I don't get that feeling at all. Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben? Sign me the fuck up. Andrew Garfield is a very good young actor, this movie could be his coming out party and Emma fucking Stone. Not only do I find her attractive but she is a very good actress. Also, Rhys Ifans is a great actor, and even though I am skeptical of The Lizard being in a movie, I do believe Ifans a good enough actor to make it work. I wouldn't say this movie will be a great film, but I wouldn't give up hope. Every reboot needs to start somewhere, and this one has a nice starting point.

However, the real reason I came here today was to talk about Due Date. Funny movie, but not Todd Phillips best work. The Hangover and especially Old School are much better then Due Date. Due Date was just rushed from one scene to another, with little time for things to develop. Robert Downey Jr., was hilarious as usual. The way he over states things is what makes his comedy so special. Zach Galifiankis was entertaining, but I miss his sarcastic side. I really wish he would do a role like he did in Out Cold again, because that's when I feel like he is at his best. The supporting cast was good with Danny McBride being the highlight. Juliette Lewis has always been a favorite of mine, especially when she is working with Phillips.

Overall Due Date was a good movie, but I felt like it underwhelmed. It is worth a watch, but I would recommend not going in with the hope of it being Phillips best work, cause it isn't. 7/10.
