Bullshit About Movies, Release Dates, and Box Office (PLEASE READ FIRST POST)

Just so I can chime in before someone else does...If you enjoyed that, you absolutely need to see the 1973 original. It's miles better than the Nic Cage version, which changed many important parts. The twist at the end of the original is ranked by some as one of the best.

I'll be sure to check it out Doc. The funny thing about it is, I was actually looking for the original, but I couldn't find it, so I choose to settle for the 2006 version. I'm still surprised that this movie was actually decent because as I said earlier, Cage has been involved in a lot of garbage over the past 4 or 5 years.

The Wicker Man remake is one of the biggest pieces of steaming pile of shit EVER created in Hollywood. It's so fucking awful, that it's actually one of the damn funniest movies I've ever seen in my entire life, unintentionally so. They should have marketed that film as a comedy, as I don't how the fuck as an audience we aren't supposed to laugh when we see Nicolas Cage beating the fuck out of women and children, stealing bicycles, and dressing up like a bear and then superman punching a woman in the face. Literally that has to be the funniest damn move I've ever seen.

Doc is right though, the original is roughly 12,000 times superior, probably because it's actually a damn fine film and not a steaming pile of turd like the remake was. Really disturbing and creepy film with a wonderful ending that's probably already been ruined for you. Great, great film.

Watched some shitty movies lately. Some comedy called Sex Drive. Awful, awful humor, but a semi-sweet little romance story kept it watchable. Phantasm II, such a shit movie but one I highly enjoy. I also FINALLY got around to seeing PT Anderson's Hard Eight a few days ago after having it on my DVR for literally about a year, great film just as I knew it would be.

I just got back from watching Alice In Wonderland, and I'm surprised to say I actually liked it. I went into this movie with a VERY negative mind set, but as usual, Tim Burton and Johnny Depp didn't disappoint me. I saw it in 3D, and I must say that the visuals in this film were amazing. The story was something I've seen over a thousand times, but the acting in this movie kept me entertained. Helena Bonham Carter was just amazing. This women is by far one of my favorite actresses of all time. She was just great. Also, for some reason I thought Anne Hathaway was hot as the White Queen. Is that normal?

I see where X is coming from when he talks about The Wicker Man(2006). I'll admit I was trying real hard to take this movie seriously, and I did laugh sometimes, especially towards the end, but compared to some of the shit Cage has been making lately, this wasn't bad. I'll have to see the original version because that's the one I was looking for anyway, and I still want to see it.

Well I just saw Repo Men, and I must say I'm disappointed. I went into this movie with very high expectations because I thought the story for this film was something unique. Forest Whitaker and Jude Law are an awesome duo in this movie, and while this film does have a good premise, it falls flat towards the middle of the film. During the middle of this film you WILL clearly see where the story will end up going. There is a twist at the end, but it still wasn't enough for me to like this movie.

I assure you, it's not unique at all. The entire film is in fact actually a Hollywood-ized rip-off of a horror/musical film released a few years back called "Repo! The Genetic Opera" which had basically the exact same plot. Unfortunately the original was absolutely terrible, even by campy-horror-musical standards, so I had no interest in this pseudo-remake to begin with.

It's Hollywood man, these days the words "Hollywood" and "Unique" just don't go together I'm afraid.

Watched a SHITLOAD of movies this week, stuff I've been meaning to. I'll go post in the Movie Log thread about them sometime today.

Rewatched In The Loop and I have to maintain that of all the movies nominated for screenwriting Oscars this year, this is the one that deserved it the most. People with no power insulting eachother in an impressively consistent and entertaining way is just something I enjoy watching when done right. It's like an internet forum, but with foreign policy being decided. Me love it long time.

I really wish I could find the interaction between Capaldi and Gandolfini on Youtube. That shit cracks me up hard. To make up for the lack of that:

I watched Striptease last night and remembered how terrible it is. On the plus side though Demi Moore has a banging body. God damn that woman was gorgeous in the 90's and remains so today. Ashton is a lucky fucking dude.

Overall of the film terrible terrible film. Ving Rhames was somewhat entertaining. I could always use a little more Ving Rhames in my life. Demi Moore is hot and the guy from CSI: Las Vegas is kind of funny. Shitty film though.

Yeah that is unfortunate. I had high expectations for this film, but I was let down in a huge way. It's true, Hollywood and unique just don't go toghther. I had these same feelings about the movie Hancock with Will Smith. This movie seemed like it would be something unique, but Hollywood had to poison it.

I remember reading about"Repo! The Genetic Opera" some years back. I was going to check this movie out, but once I found out Paris Hilton was in it I made sure to avoid it because I knew there was a good chance this movie would be shit.

Striptease was horrible. I haven't seen this movie in a couple of years, but I can still remember how bad it was. I just couldn't stand how they had Burt Reynolds playing this psycho/pervert congressman. What a terrible character. Demi actually did an okay job acting, but the story was just too silly, and the movie was just plain bad.

Before I go on this rant, please know that I am a diehard Halloween fan. There will also be some SPOILERS!

I just finished watching Halloween 2 and I thought it was utter garbage. Michael spent to much time unmasked, they tried to make him to sympathetic, he spoke to much (yes one word is to much for me), and the way they portrayed the relationship between himself and his sister Laurie (The Scream Queen Scout Taylor-Compton) had me questioning who the real bad guy was. There was so many differences in this movie then the original that I can't even consider it a part of the Halloween series. The first movie I was able to tolerate, but this one just turned me off from basically the start. Rob Zombie should have named this movie something else as it was in no way like the original. Only about 15 minutes actually took place in a hospital, but it was all a dream. Michael was being guided by the spirit of his younger self and his mother (Sherri Moon Zombie...which Rob has to find a major part in every movie he does), Dr. Sam Loomis has turned into a money hungry asshole who is exploiting the Michael Myers tragedy to turn a nifty profit for himself, and this movie took place two years after the first instead of the same night.

Basically what happened was after the first movie Laurie (Compton) moved in with her friend Annie who also happened to somehow survive the brutal attack from two years ago. Their relationship is strained due to the fact that they both have scars on their faces and they serve as a constant reminder to Laurie that she caused her friend that pain. She has apparently undergone this metamorphosis from perennial good girl to tattooed bitch. She is still in her therapy sessions which she thinks she doesn't need because they are not doing any good. She has some major anger issues, but thinks that pills are her magic cure. I was expecting her to go back to her good girl self sometime through the movie, but it just never came.

Michael on the other hand, was being transported in the back of a coroners vehicle after being shot in the head and presumed dead. At some point during the trip, the officer and coroner get to joking around and crash into a cow. This jolt seems to awaken Michael from his slumber to once again wreak havoc. Michael just seems to wander off to keep to himself until a group of rednecks beat him down with a tire iron and baseball bat. He pretty much just wanders right through the middle of town with no mask on where he is unnoticeable for the better part of the movie. He only puts the mask on when he kills. He murders all but little children, but really to me never seems to be the bad guy. It seems like every time he killed someone, they provoked him.

The first fifteen minutes of the movie were incredible IMO, but the final 20 minutes was horrible, also IMO. The way it ended...
With Michael taking off his mask and telling Loomis to die in the final fight with Loomis before he is gunned down. Also with Laurie going crazy and being shot several times before surviving and being institutionalized.
was so far from the original where I actually thought I was watching a different movie.

All in all, I say this movie should only be seen if you are a fan of long slasher movies or a fan of the series, although you will probably be disappointed.

Me and FT75 went and saw Hot Tub Time Machine last night. It wasn't the biggest piece of shit I have ever seen, in fact I would venture to say I sorta liked it. All four of the main characters were funny at some point or another. Clark Duke and Rob Corddry were the funniest. Crispen Glover, an actor I love, was also very funny. The story wasn't the worst though I am sure my Back To The Future fanboyism is the driving force behind me seeing this movie. If your a fan of stupid comedies then this movie should be right up your alley. It has some great one liners that are surely going to be run into the ground within the next 2 months.

Before I go on this rant, please know that I am a diehard Halloween fan. There will also be some SPOILERS!

And allow me to say before I respond to your post, that I am a diehard Halloween fan as well. The original Halloween is probably my favorite movie of all time, tied with Blue Velvet.

I just finished watching Halloween 2 and I thought it was utter garbage. Michael spent to much time unmasked

Huh? He was unmasked for like ten minutes. He spent more time unmasked in the original Halloween.

they tried to make him to sympathetic

Huh? How? They just tried to show that he wasn't a mindless zombie-monster, that he was still a human being.

, he spoke to much (yes one word is to much for me)

Not sure what your definition of speaking is, but I don't think a barely audible grunt counts as "speaking". He didn't say any actual words. He grunted. Like a human being tends to do when exerting a large amount of force to murder someone.

and the way they portrayed the relationship between himself and his sister Laurie (The Scream Queen Scout Taylor-Compton) had me questioning who the real bad guy was. There was so many differences in this movie then the original that I can't even consider it a part of the Halloween series.

That's too bad for you, because it certainly is. The film was a big improvement over the last four Halloween films, all of which have been pretty much total shit.

The first movie I was able to tolerate, but this one just turned me off from basically the start. Rob Zombie should have named this movie something else as it was in no way like the original.

You're right, it was a re-imagining. Did you actually think it was going to be a shot-for-shot remake of the original Halloween II? Not sure how you could watch the first Zombie remake and actually think he was going to do a shot-by-shot remake, rather obvious from the beginning that this was a total re-imagining of the Michael Myers character.

Only about 15 minutes actually took place in a hospital, but it was all a dream.

More like 25-30 minutes, and that was some of the best 25-30 minutes I've seen in a Halloween film since Halloween 4.

Again---RE-IMAGINING of the Halloween series, not a shot-for-shot remake. Who the fuck would want to see a shot-for-shot remake of a slasher film? Just watch the original. I do agree about the direction of Dr. Loomis' character though, I wasn't a fan of that.

I was expecting her to go back to her good girl self sometime through the movie, but it just never came.

...Why the fuck would she? She's watched her family and friends be brutally murdered in front of her and has been stalked by a serial killer. On what planet does someone go back to being a nice, polite "good girl" after that happens Scotty?

Michael on the other hand, was being transported in the back of a coroners vehicle after being shot in the head and presumed dead. At some point during the trip, the officer and coroner get to joking around and crash into a cow. This jolt seems to awaken Michael from his slumber to once again wreak havoc. Michael just seems to wander off to keep to himself until a group of rednecks beat him down with a tire iron and baseball bat. He murders all but little children, but really to me never seems to be the bad guy. It seems like every time he killed someone, they provoked him.

How did Laurie's friends provoke Michael? Yeah some redneck douches got killed, they do in every damn slasher film ever made. Not sure how you could think Michael was the good guy after he killed Annie though. For fucks sake he killed Danielle Harris, one of the most beloved actresses in the history of the Halloween franchise.

The first fifteen minutes of the movie were incredible IMO, but the final 20 minutes was horrible, also IMO. The way it ended...
With Michael taking off his mask and telling Loomis to die in the final fight with Loomis before he is gunned down. Also with Laurie going crazy and being shot several times before surviving and being institutionalized.
was so far from the original where I actually thought I was watching a different movie.

...You WERE watching a different movie. This was a sequel to Rob Zombie's first Halloween film, NOT a remake of the original Halloween II. Rob, the studio, and everyone involved with the project has said that since day one.

All in all, I say this movie should only be seen if you are a fan of long slasher movies or a fan of the series, although you will probably be disappointed.

Far too harsh, I really enjoyed Halloween II, rated it 3/5 if I remember correctly. I wrote up a lengthy review after I saw it here:

I just got finished watching The Blind Side a few minutes ago, and I must say it gets   from jmt225.

Very, very touching film, with Sandra Bullock's performance ranking in my book as the 2nd best performance of the year 2009, while the film as a whole would rank as the 4th best of the year 2009. (Note: I still need to see Precious, The Hurt Locker, Mother, The White Ribbon, and a couple of other highly regarded films from this year). The film and her performance completely live up to the hype if you ask me, and I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoyed it. Catch it out if you haven't already.

Just finished watching Clash of the Titans. I knew that I was either going to like it or despise it. Thank goodness I liked it. It was pretty good for a cheesy 80's, mythological movie. The filmmakers did a good job with the claymation monsters especially for the time period this movie was made in. It does look cheesy but it isn't overly cheesy to the point where I want to gauge my eyes out. It also did a good job of telling the Greek story of Perseus. I will not say it is completely accurate, because I quiet honestly have forgotten the entire story, but it does a better job then many mythological films of today. Clash of the Titans is definitely a movie I will be buying in the near future.

So, I watched a few random movies on IFC the past couples of nights, and I thought to myself, self, why not come and discuss these with some great members of the forums.

I watched "Go" with Katie Holmes, Jay Mohr, William Fitchner and various other actors who I don't really know. I'd never heard of it before, and it turned out being really good. It appears it got great reviews as well, even being compared to Pulp Fiction, even though it's obviously not on that level. Still, thoroughly enjoyable film.

I also saw "Cabin Fever", which stared the guy that played Shawn on Boy Meets World. I think it was supposed to mock previous horror films or something, but regardless of what it was supposed to do, it was absolutely terrible, to the point where it was funny. Appratnely there is a sequel as well. I should check it out.

I saw the Hot Tub Time Machine last night, and it was pretty much what I expected. It was a movie filled with raunchy humor and crude jokes, but I must say, I was laughing throughout the whole movie. Rob Corddry was absolutely hilarious. He was easily the best character in this movie, and he also did a good job in Harlod and Kumar Esacpe From Guantanamo Bay. For some reason, John Cusack looked out of place in this movie to me. He had his funny moments, but still, he just didn't look right in this movie at times. This movie isn't as good as The Hangover, but it will make you laugh.

Go is a great little film, one that I've always really liked. I actually just watched it myself about a month or two ago for the first time in a long time, and it seems like the more times I watch the film, the more things I notice that I hadn't before. I love the underlying themes of the film though about the 90s generation and how everyone wants instant gratification without any of the work. Really good film.

I watched the Halloween II Director's Cut last night, loved it. A few mistakes were made by Rob Zombie, no doubt about it, but overall it was the perfect way to close the book on the story-arch of the Myers family in Zombie's universe, I won't spoil the DC ending, but it's vastly different from the theatrical cut's ending.

I just watched Sunset Blvd. on TCM. I have been waiting a long time to see this movie and sure as hell lived up to my expectations. I loved it. I really liked seeing the underside of the movie business and seedy and rough it is for those who are past their prime. William Holden and Gloria Swanson were dynamite in their roles. They were perfectly cast for their roles. Sunset Blvd. really lived up to all the hype I had heard about it and deserves its place in film history.

Oh yeah Sunset Boulevard is a fantastic film, William Holden's best role without a doubt, I didn't realize you were into film that much Jon, cool to see another person who likes to dig into the past to see the gems of yesteryear. One of the best films made about Hollywood, without a doubt, but there are a few films I'd probably rank above it in when it comes to films about the dark underbelly of Hollywood, most notably Robert Altman's The Player, which you should definitely seek out if you've never seen it Jon.

Yeah I love film, my minor in college is actually in film. I haven't seen a whole lot of older films but I am trying to seek them out one by one, just so happens Sunset Blvd. was on TV today so I checked it out. I will definitely make sure to find The Player and check it out as well.

Comments: One of the great things about posting multiple box office reports is that you get to see which films are major flops and which ones look to be good to go for the long haul. It should be no surprise to anyone that Burton and Depp have scored another monster hit with Alice in Wonderland. Avatar is FINALLY out of the top 10; I kind of feel sorry for Cameron, as everyone will now expect his next film to top both Titanic and Avatar (here's to hoping he can do it). Unfortunately for Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass, it looks like their first collaboration outside of the Bourne franchise isn't as lucrative (I personally don't give a shit, to be honest; sure, a certain administrator here loves Matt Damon, but I think he sucks as an action star).

All right, not much else to say for now. The Clash of the Titans remake is coming out this weekend; I expect it to make somewhere in the 80 to 90 million range. See you on Monday!

So I went to see Hot Tub Time Machine last night and was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the movie. What first caught me off guard was that the film was directed and co-written by Steve Pink, John Cusack's long time writing partner and the man he was responsible for writing/producing Grosse Point Blank (and High Fidelity) with a decade ago. Seeing those two working together again instantly put my spirits up. I mean, it's a TOTALLY different kind of movie than those two, but that's okay. It knows it's just a fun raunchy comedy send-up of all those 80s cliches (it's like a live-action version of the South Park episode "Asspen") and it doesn't pretend to be anything else, it gives you exactly what you want---crude jokes, drug use, nudity, over-the-top antics and a rockin' 80s soundtrack. Add in Crispin Glover's BRILLIANT recurring cameo throughout the movie, and I just had a fun time from start to finish.

Thumbs up from me for Hot Tub Time Machine. If you feel like watching something silly and stupid and just plain fun, go for it, you won't be disappointed at all. Rob Corddry also practically stole the movie in every scene he was in. Fun stuff.

Just watched Clash of the Titans last night. It was shit. The 40 minutes me and the group of friends with me spent outside the cinema teasing the shit out of the movie was far more interesting than the movie itself. They just could have done so much better . Has any here played that game Age of Mythology? Yeah, the opening cinematic of that was better done than Clash of the Titans.

I think this is the problem I have with 3D movies. They rely too much on the visuals, and just expect they can get away with a shit movie if a giant scorpion is coming at the screen and making people wet themselves. Now that's not to say this movie didn't have potential. It had plenty, and greek mythology is such a rich background to build your story on. But they just twisted it into some heroic Hollywood piece of garbage. characters are generic, and you find yourself ambivalent about the hero and his struggles. the love story is pathetic, as we're given about 5 minutes of dialogue and expected to believe they're soulmates.

In fact, most of the characters get about 5 minutes, even the semi interesting ones, and are just taken off the screen almost as soon as you meet them. There was actually a good band of rag tag greek heroes they had going. And then they ruin it.

So. Yeah, I don't recommend it.

Well i enjoyed Clash of the Titans quiet a bit. It was a nice little action flick. The story was not very good and the acting was above average but it had good visuals and cool action scenes. The movie deviated greatly from the original ancient Greek story but that was to be expected. I can understand why someone would not particularly like it but I did enjoy it. Solid 7/10 and a nice way to start the summer blockbuster season.

I just saw Clash Of The Titans, and I walked out of this movie some what pleased. The battle scenes weren't as great as I thought they would be, and this film did have your usual corny moments, but I expected that. Although, the action throughout the film was pretty good, and the acting was passable. This movie had your typical Hollywood blockbuster ending, and believe me, you will be able to see it coming from a mile away. Still, I liked this film because it was pretty much what I expected, and it did deliver to a certain extent.

On a side note, please don't go see this movie in 3D. I did, and it wasn't worth it because there are very few 3D worthy moments in this film.

I went and watched Green Zone last night. I went to the movies expecting to watch something else so I wasn't expecting anything brilliant from the movie but was I wrong. This movie was awesome. The plot flowed well through the action and talking scenes (theres probably a better name than talking scenes) and it kept you involved the whole way. Being in New Zealand I dont really know the ins and outs of the Iraq war but this film explained everything well. It had enough plot twists and sensibility to keep you entertained throughout without going over the top and I had a really enjoyable time from start to finish.

On a side note I really enjoyed Matt Damon's performance in the movie. I hadn't enjoyed some of his roles before this so I was a bit hesitant going in to the movie. he really performed well though and just put an extra dynamic onto an already solid film.
