107 points. 1st in the NHL, again.

• Stepan with two primary assists on the PP tonight.

• Del Zotto registers his 41st point, which puts him in line in scoring among defenseman at 9th in the NHL.

• Gáborík one goal away from 40 for the third time in his career and second time as a Ranger.

• Third time in franchise history the Rangers have reached 50 wins. Last time they did so? 1994.

• Richards ties the franchise record for most game-winning goals scored in a season as a Ranger with 9.

• The Rangers are now 24-1-4 when scoring a PP goal in the game.

Ugh!!! Don't remind me :banghead:

Though I would kill for a Canucks / Rangers rematch, this time with a different result. That showdown would be epic.

Though I am not jinxing anything Canucks related.

One point—one—is all that's needed for the Rangers to clinch the Eastern Conference thanks to the Flyers' spanking of the no longer so dominant looking Penguins earlier today (thanks, Bullies).

And how appropriate... we can do so by beating the defending Stanley Cup Champions in front of a raucous crowd at MSG!

Eyes open there, habs. The shit is on.

LET'S GO RANGERS!

I was just wondering if anyone knows who won the hockey game last night between the Boston Bruins and the New York Rangers. I was busy watching Wrestlemania, of course, where there were examples of classic action but predictable finishes. I was just wondering if the same could be said about the hockey game.

Apparently, I heard the Rangers just needed one single point to clinch the Eastern Conference, which could allegedly happen against the defending Stanley Cup champions in front of a raucous crowd at MSG. Does anyone know if this is how it all played out, or did the more experienced team, who are hitting their stride at just the right time, riding momentum into the playoffs like they did last season, end up prevailing over the less experienced and overachieving pretenders?

Perhaps one of the staff members here on the Wrestlezone Forums would be kind enough to shed some light on the situation for me?

:)

Cute, but you won a hard-fought game by a single fluke goal. Let's not sit here and ignore reality (again) and treat this as though the Rangers just got ass-fucked all year, or even for three periods by that count, by some unstoppable juggernaut of a Bruins team.

That was a playoff game. In a seven-game series, it like goes that far, so count your blessings that you won't be meeting us until the Conference finals, at least.

All good, though. Magic number is still one. The East is ours. The Penguins and Flyers need to win every single game in regulation to push us into 4th. Won't happen, so it's onward and upward to our first round opponents!

So are you telling me, the Bruins actually won that game last night? Thank you for the information, I was unaware of that fact.

That was like a playoff game, and it is prophetic as to how I see the playoff games playing out this season. You know, always the bridesmaid but never the bride?

For the record, I'm not too concerned about facing the Rangers in any round of the playoffs, least of all the Conference Finals. Frankly, I'm not sure the Rangers will make it that far.

Should be interesting, though, however it all plays out. And I'd be willing to make it more interesting, if you wish.

Really? Always the bridesmaid, never the bride? Really?

This coming from the guy who's club hadn't won a Stanley Cup in 39 fucking years prior to finally winning it last season, and now you have the gall to go around taunting other fans as though you are untouchable?

Let me illustrate this for you again, as I've already done once this year:

• Your starting goaltender is 37 and nearing retirement.
• Your captain and best defenseman is 35 and rapidly approaching the downside of his career.
• Your 2nd, 3rd and 4th highest scoring forwards last season all have a history of major injury and your 5th highest scoring forward in the regular season and 4th highest scoring forward in the playoffs is now retired.
• Joe Corvo (34), Andrew Ference (33), Greg Zanon (31), Mike Mottau (34), Brian Rolston (38), Shawn Thornton (34) and Chris Kelley (31) are all on the wrong side of 30.

Yet it's my club who isn't showing any glimpses of promise? Don't flatter yourself.

Fact is, the Rangers and Bruins are built in the exact same mold. Defense, goaltending and the proper match-ups will determine just how far they get, but the moment the two clubs face one another, I'll gladly up the ante and we can make this a lot more interesting.

First place — secured.

At this point it's just a matter of match-ups, and personally, I'm really hoping the Caps squeak in for two very important reasons:

1. Ryan Miller alone is capable of stealing a series. If they can avoid having to play him, they'll be that much better off.

2. They owe the Capitals a serious fucking beat down for the last two opening rounds of the playoffs where the Rangers were bounced early, both times by the Caps. That team is primed for collapse, too, with so many locker room issues between Ovechkin, Semin & Co. and head coach Dale Hunter. It'd be sweet to knock them out on their asses in the first round like they did to us the last few years.

--

What about you guys (with teams in the playoff picture) — who do you want to face, and why?

Second place - secured. And I am quite satisfied with that. As it stands at the moment, that means hosting the Ottawa Senators in the opening round of the playoffs, and I like the Bruins chances here. Granted it's not a sure thing, it never is, but I'm not worried whatsoever about the Senators, especially with their goaltending situation. All due respect but of the 8-9 teams in contention in the east, I see Ottawa as the weakest opponent.

Another perk associated with being the second seed is the strong likelihood of having home ice advantage for the subsequent rounds in the Eastern Conference playoffs.

:)

Ottawa and Washington are the two weakest teams in the Eastern Conference right now, bar none. That's not to say either team can't pull off an upset, but I wouldn't hold my breathe in either case.

The only other "weak" team, though I think they have a much higher percentage chance at pulling off an upset, are the Florida Panthers.

President's Trophy scenarios:

New York Rangers(51-24-7 • 109 Points • 47 ROW'S) can clinch with:
Win on Saturday vs Washington
Loss vs Washington, Loss by St.Louis and Loss by Vancouver

Vancouver Canucks (50-22-9 • 109 Points • 42 ROW'S) can clinch with:
Win against Edmonton, NYR loss and St.Louis loss

St. Louis Blues (48-22-11 • 107 Points • 44 ROW'S) can clinch with:
Two Wins, NYR loss and VAN loss
3/4 points, NYR loss and VAN loss
Two Wins and VAN Win- ROW breaks tie.

A couple of points to make as the playoffs loom next week.

God, the Penguins are a dirty team! Last night they put that on display against the Rangers, the game before that against the Flyers. As a general rule of thumb, I don't have too much problem with any particular team. But I hope someone bounces them out of the playoffs and early. I'm not a fan of the Flyers by any stretch of the imagination, but I do want to see them eliminate Pittsburgh in round one.

I cannot begin to describe the pleasure I derive out of see the Montreal Canadiens finish the season in dead last in the Eastern Conference. No playoffs, chaos in the front office. And with any luck, no Carey Price next season either.

Hoping to see a Blackhawks/Canucks matchup in the Western finals. And a Bruins/Rangers meeting in the East. For obvious reasons.

The Penguins aren't a dirty team, they just have a good handful of very dirty players — two of whom get NHL preferential treatment in Crosby and Malkin.

Add to that list Cooke and Orpik, and yeah, it's pretty easy to see why fans hate that organization.

Tortorella went off on them after the Orpik knee-on-knee hit on Stepan in the post-game last night:

@NYP_Brooksie:
Tortorella lashes out at Pens following Orpik knee on Stepan: ""One of most arrogant organizations in league..."

Tortorella re Pens: "They'll whine about something else won't they, starting with their two [expletive deleted] stars."

More from Tortorella: "Cheap, dirty hit. I wonder what would happen if we did it to their two whining stars over there."

I love how tortorella said this! i completely agree with then and im even from the same province crosby is, and there arent too many good nhlers from nova scotia. but i do think that crosby gets away with way too much and is a huge whiner, but somehow its okay because he's "so competitive" thats always the lame-ass excuse they give, but i think either Boston repeats as champs, or the blues finally win their first cup, because they already play everygame like its a low scoring playoff game, and i think they got the perfect approach to the game right now. Backes or Seguin for conn smythe.

The Orpik hit was a dirty one, no doubt. But to include Crosby and Malkin in that list just because they're the most high-profile not only on the team but in the league, is just ludicrous. Malkin takes stupid penalties out of frustration, but he's not dirty. And I don't see how Crosby can be labeled a dirty player. Further, seeing how Matt Cooke didn't play dirty whatsoever this year, was one of the least penalized forwards on the team and did everything he could to shake that rep, I'd be hard pressed to label him as dirty either.

Does Crosby whine? Sure. So does Ryan Callahan. So does Alex Ovechkin. Name the captain from a given team, and they'ld be doing a BAD job as a captain if they weren't on the refs case. If you can influence the game-and Crosby has showed you can- through talking to the refs, you'ld be a fool not to try as team captain. Torterella was emotional and pissed over the Orpik hit, and rightfully so, so I don't blame him for lashing out the way he did. Im no homer, believe me, the hit by Orpik was damn dirty, and has no place in hockey.

I'm just not sure how Crosby and Malkin fit in that discussion, as neither are dirty. Crosby does whine from time to time, but hes doing his job in doing so. And Malkin, well, he knows about 25 words of English, so Im not sure how much whining he's doing to the refs....
-----------------

It was a helluva regular season for the Pens, as they finished with 108 points, 2nd most in team history. Malkin gets his 50th goal in the regular season finale, and Dupuis got his 25th, and extended his NHL season long point streak to 17 games. Unreal for a guy who was a throw-in to the Pens in a trade that brought them Marian Hossa.

That also gives the Pens 5 guys with 25+ goals, including Neal's 40, and of course, Malkin's 50. Staal also had 25, and Chris Kunitz had 26. With none of those guys being named Crosby or Steve Sullivan, and this team is as deep as any up front come playoff time.

It's the worst possible draw for the Penguins in the Flyers, as neither of these teams deserves to be bounced in Round 1, but alas, it's going to happen. It was a huge confidence boost, I'd imagine, even in a meaningless game, for the Pens to get their first Victory at Consol Energy Center against the Flyers. The Pens could play at least two games there against the Flyers, so they're going to need a few wins there to win this series. I do think the Penguins have the advantage in net, are deeper up front, and their defensive corps are slightly better. Still, any gaps aren't much, and I expect this to be a high scoring series that's closely contested. Still, I think Fleury will steal a game, the Penguins will get a big game from Crosby and Malkin apiece, and their secondary scoring will win them a game. A tight, tight series against the team I hate the most, but respect. Ill take Pens in 7.

No, dude, Crosby and Malkin are dirty players.

YouTube search for yourself — Malkin slewfoot, Crosby slewfoot.

And it doesn't end there. Both of them take repeated shots during the game a opposing players. Crosby slashes guys, repeatedly. Malkin does the same, and throws fits often. Just this season alone I can recall four events when he punched a Ranger in the face, with his glove still on, and WAS NOT CALLED FOR IT.

Sorry, but this play here is exactly why these guys are developing the egos and reputation they are right now:

...and CALLAHAN got the call?! Seriously?!

They are definitly cheap, dirty players and whiners. crosbys always pullin shit like this, and if it dont work then he whines about it, and have you ever watched malkin during the end of whistle scrums?! always facewashin guys and slashing then he'll tie them up and never drops the gloves and whines to the ref about them comin after him. not too mention crosby is the biggest diver in the league, just watch Schenn tap him from the game the other night

...and the Rangers continue to do things #TheRightWay, announcing yesterday the signing of 2009 first-round pick Chris Kreider to a three-year/$3.9M entry-level deal ($1.3M cap hit).

Kreider burns a year of his ELC by reporting this season, but considering the Blueshirts' lack of a scoring LW, if he can find a groove in the post-season that's anything even remotely like what he managed to accomplish with BC in the Frozen Four this year, or over the last three years (where he's won an NCAA title twice in three years), the Rangers will be that much harder to play against in the playoffs.

For those who are utterly unaware, Kreider has been touted as one of the fastest skaters on the planet (I am not joking) by nearly every NHL scout and has been "NHL-ready" since he was 19 years old according to a large majority of them.

Just a couple highlight vids of what this kid is capable of:

Note the incredible breakaway speed in the second. He was gone in three strides. WOW.

Here's a video clip of the "controversial" hit by Shea Weber on Henrik Zetterberg, from last night's Red Wings-Predators Game 1 of West Quarterfinals:

http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2012/04/red_wings_henrik_zetterberg_ha_2.html

Suspension or not? You make the call.

Here are my thoughts (keep in mind, I am a wings fan FWIW): Very, Very cheap shot. That happened right at the end of the game (3 seconds left). The regular speed clip makes it look a lot worse, it doesn't look as bad, in slow mo, IMO. This was dirty absolutely. Suspendable? I'm leaning towards no. Zetterberg dumped the puck into the corner and was trying to play the puck along the boards, it's not like Weber just randomly hit him. That said though, he grabs Zetterberg's head, pulls it back and slams it forward into the boards. Since Zetterberg didnt get hurt, I don't think the league will suspend him. However, if they do, it won't surprise me. They are most likely going to weigh the impact of a suspension to Nashville's best player vs. the fear of retribution by the Wings if he's not suspended.

If this was the regular season, I Weber would miss a game for sure but not in the playoffs. I've seen much dirtier hits.

That said, the Wings don't really have any goons anymore BUT I have no doubt that Kronwall and Bertuzzi(still has some goon left in him) will take care of it if Weber isn't suspended.

...it's not like Weber just randomly hit him. That said though, he grabs Zetterberg's head, pulls it back and slams it forward into the boards.

Which is exactly why it will be a suspension. Weber cannot argue that it was just part of the game. It was dirty as hell. There is no part of hockey whatsoever that would make intentionally grabbing another player's head and pretending the glass was a turnbuckle okay.

I'm glad Zetterberg wasn't hurt, as he could have been concussed from that. The fact that he didn't get hurt is maybe why I'm not so adament that Weber should be suspended. Whether or not a guy gets hurt SHOULDN'T be the criteria for whether they suspend someone or not but let's be honest here, it is.

Weber's play was pretty dirty. The game was over, it was completely unnecessary but that said, we're talking about the playoffs. Was it bad enough to warrant suspending Nashville's best player? I'm right on the fence on this.
Believe me, I would love Weber to miss a game but if he's not suspended I'm not going to be mad at Shanny. I'm just going to hope for Kronwall and others to issue a "suspension" of their own to Weber. Too bad we get rid of Commodore. He would have been a good goon to send out there for Game 2.

Shea Weber absolutely deserves to be suspended for that hit, he grabbed a players head & intentionally & repeatedly slammed it into the glass with the intent of injuring one of the star players of the opposing team. How can anyone in their right mind not say that warrants a suspension especially in the era of sports we are living in, when all major sports leagues are cracking down on hits to the head. Weber deserves to be suspended & suspended for a long as time too. I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't see another game in this series, hell I wouldn't be shocked if his season is over after that bullshit.

As far as I'm concerned, Weber will get a game for intent to injure, but that doesn't excuse Zetterberg's elbow that drove Weber's head into the boards, either. There's a reason he was angry enough to do that.

Either way, I expect Weber will sit for Game 2.

Don't know if anyone saw what happened to Darren Helm in that game but it was pretty scary. He took a skate blade across the side of his forearm during a PK. He immediately dropped his stick and gloves and skated to the bench and into the locker room. They took him to the hospital shortly thereafter.

There's no official word on the actual injury yet but Mike Babcock said this morning that it's "severe" and they're working under the assumption that he's done for the playoffs.

Terrible stroke of luck as this was his first game back after an MCL injury in March.

On a side note, what happened in that Pitt-Philly game? I was watching it and changed over to the Wings when it was 3-0 then I saw the ticker and it was 3-3? Did Shitsburgh just implode or what?

Basically, yes.

Pens came out like bats out of hell, and went up 3-0 in the first, then coasted for a large portion of the 2nd and by the end of the third were on their heels doing everything they could to try to stave off the Flyers relentless attack.

Brière alone was skating circles around them.
