2013 NHL Thread

Don't know if anyone saw what happened to Darren Helm in that game but it was pretty scary. He took a skate blade across the side of his forearm during a PK. He immediately dropped his stick and gloves and skated to the bench and into the locker room. They took him to the hospital shortly thereafter.

There's no official word on the actual injury yet but Mike Babcock said this morning that it's "severe" and they're working under the assumption that he's done for the playoffs.

Terrible stroke of luck as this was his first game back after an MCL injury in March.

On a side note, what happened in that Pitt-Philly game? I was watching it and changed over to the Wings when it was 3-0 then I saw the ticker and it was 3-3? Did Shitsburgh just implode or what?

According to MLive, Helm had surgery on his arm to repair the damage, and is most likely out for the rest of the playoffs. Really sucks for him, and the Red Wings will certainly miss his speed, for however long they last in the playoffs. Just a total fluke kinda thing, too.

Really, really sucks. You're right, a total fluke. The skate hit exactly where his glove wasn't covering.

So, who comes in to replace him? What I want to see is Nyquist in for Emmerton and then Mursak in for Helm (at least for now).

@DetroitRedWings:
HELM UPDATE: Darren had successful surgery to repair lacerated tendons in his right forearm. He is out for the remainder of the playoffs.

Was a nasty, nasty play, and such an unfortunate circumstance for a guy just coming back from injury, but the Wings do have some depth in the AHL they can call on, just as they did in all the games prior he had missed.

There will be payback. It's unfortunate, because it's not like the Red Wings and Predators have any kind of real bad blood between them. The Predators readily acknowledge that they have modeled themselves entirely on the Red Wings, and they were one team that if they beat Detroit, I would root for in later rounds. But, because there was no suspension, there will be some retaliation (there has to be), and that's just going to lead to bad blood. Obviously, this won't approach anything near the escalation the Wings/AVs got to because of that cowardly sonofa****e Claude Lemieux's cheap shot against Kris Draper, but, it's not going to make the teams get along any better, either.

Until this series is over,

:flipa:, Nashville.

I'll say this much of the Pens, LSN — I know you're embarrassed for your team right now (and should be), but do not discount your club. That team is still the single biggest threat in the NHL right now IMO (which is exactly why I'm rooting for the Flyers), and down 1-0 in the series, having given up four straight or not, I do not expect the Penguins to just roll over and die.

Game 2 is going to be war.

Rangers win game one, 4-2.

Some sloppy play to close the game which'll need to be corrected heading into Saturday night's game 2, but ultimately the team played well for the majority of the game.

Callahan set the tone early with hard play and a goal scored in typical Callahan fashion off hard work in front of the net. Boyle scored his first playoff goal, Hagelin scored his first playoff point and Strålman too.

Very confident going into Saturday!

LET'S GO RANGERS!

And now I can breathe again! Overall, a good performance by the Bruins, although a little complacent and tentative in the third period. A 30-17 edge in shots on goal, though, and physical dominance over the underdog Caps. And typical excellence from Tim Thomas.

I feel bad for the rookie goalie for the Capitals. I never even heard of Holtby, and he played well even though the GWG was a soft one.

Actually, I'm lying, I don't feel any sympathy for him whatsoever.

One down, fifteen to go.

GO BRUINS!!!

Fellas, is there a reason in particular that the Devils-Panthers series is just beginning tonight or is that just how the schedule happened to fall?

Seems weird to me that one series would begin when every other team has already played a game.

It's just how the schedule panned out. The Quarter Finals usually have at least one series "offset" simply because of television constraints. At most they can only have two games per conference, per night, otherwise they run the risk of losing a huge market of potential viewers.

So my girlfriend's brother got me into hockey... Well really the physicality during Bruins vs. Capitals on Saturday did. But after that game, I started watching highlights of other games, and I even caught today's Predators vs. Red Wings game... and being a Tennessee native, I got happy knowing they were from Nashville.

But all of that aside, I have to ask a few queries as a "newbie fan"...

1. During the Predators/Wings game, I noticed that the "icing" penalty was mentioned throughout the game but it never really was explained in full. What exactly IS icing?

2. How come only some fights are penalized but not all.

3. In the Bruins/Capitols game there was an offside penalty, I guess for going behind the wrong line (like back court in basketball)... but then at other times, there wasn't a call. Why is that?

Again, these are questions that I got puzzled on and my friend couldn't really explain them to me as much as I had hoped.

First off, welcome to the wonderful world of hockey!

Second, and in order:

1. Icing occurs when the team in the defensive zone (defending against the team trying to score against them) throws the puck down the length of the ice, past their own goal line behind the red line (the center line). If the puck is thrown down the ice, in order to avoid icing (which results in the face-off coming back into the defensive zone and you not being able to change players), the puck has to be dumped when the player has PASSED the red line.

2. Harder to explain. Hockey is a sport that's always relished physicality and fisticuffs. In the playoffs, refs don't call games nearly as tightly as they do during the year, so post-whistle scrums and minor scuffles don't always get penalized as the intensity of the match-up is usually something the zebras aren't looking to fuck with.

3. Offside calls are controlled by the linesmen who may not always be in the proper position to make the call.

This was a wild weekend of hockey that's for sure. Brendan Shannahan has a mess on his hands trying to sort out the so called "nonsense" that occurred in many of the games.

I have to say, I am shocked that Vancouver is down 3-0 to LA. I didn't think they'd win the Cup but I also didn't think they'd bow out in the first round or get swept (which is what it looks like is going to happen).

As the odd-on-favorite to win the Cup in the East, Pittsburgh, to be honest, I'm not surprised they're losing their series but I am surprised they are down 3-0. Don't get me wrong, Philly is a great team but I didn't think they'd be able to handle the Pens the way they are.

My Wings are down 2-1 in their series with Nashville but I'm really not that nervous. I thought overall, we played pretty well in Game 3 and came so close (Franzen "scored" at the end of the second period but time had expired by .1 seconds when the puck crossed the line, Datsyuk missed an open net, Lidstrom missed an open net) several times in that game. Rinne has been playing great and Jimmy Howard as played pretty well. The Wings are just taking too many penalties and it's killing their offensive flow. I'm not here to complain about the refs (officiating in the series has been horrendous both ways). Datsyuk and Zetterberg have been fantastic but others need to step up. Game 4 should be great.

I've been impressed with my Kings showing their mettle against Vancouver. Its tough to say that they'll make it all the way to the finals; too early to tell. But I enjoyed last night's game. Lot of hits and a few fights. I really want to see them advance to the next round for a change. And if they can sweep the Canucks to do it that would be even better.

I am very surprised. I knew the Kings improved a lot this year but I thought they'd be beaten pretty easily by the Canucks. The Canucks are overrated but all the credit has to go to the Kings for the commanding 3-0 lead.

One thing that works in your team's favor is, if you are able to finish off the Canucks in 4, is that they'll get a lot of rest. All the other series' in the West look like they could go the distance.

Thanks for the welcoming. With the amount of physicality, it won't be hard for me to further get into at all :D And thanks for the answers, clears up the confusion a lot really.

What I can say that I like about hockey, or NHL, as opposed to other sports is the penalty method. In basketball, if a player fouls out, then he's out of the game and another player comes in. In hockey the player who fouls not only gets sent to the penalty box, but the entire team suffers as well. I think that further help stresses the level of team work which a lot of sports don't.

Hockey is a great sport. You picked a great time to start watching and learning about it. The NHL playoffs are about as intense and dramatic as any playoffs I can think of. If you can ever get to live game in person, do it! Hockey is my favorite sport to see in person.

Another thing is, don't worry about trying to learn every single penalty. The officiating, in the playoffs in particular, is very inconsistent and varies based on the officating crew. If you watch enough games, you'll get a general idea of the penalties but it's going to take time.

Things like icing, offsides, hand passes, happen in almost every game, so that stuff, you'll pick up on right away.

Very true. I have been watching hockey since the early 90s, and I still don't understand all of the rules/penalties. Even yesterday with the Red Wings game, I truly didn't know if the goal at the end of the 2nd period should have counted or not. I had no idea if it was like the NBA, where as long as the shot got off before the buzzer it would count, or if it had to cross the line. After 20 years of watching, I didn't know what the rule was. I am not even a playoffs only/fair weather fan who only watches a few games a year. I watch the Red Wings at least 30-40 times on Fox Sports Detroit during the regular season as well. I have seen a lot of hockey games, and still learned something new yesterday.

Again, these are questions that I got puzzled on and my friend couldn't really explain them to me as much as I had hoped.

1) Yeah, icing is when a guy shoots the puck down the ice from their side of the center line, and it isn't touched by anyone. Goalies however can't move towards the puck otherwise icing is negated. However it is negated if a player from the opposing team could have touched it before it got to the goal line.

2) Only actual "fights" where guys drop the gloves or throw punches are penalized. If there is pushing, shoving, and trash talk, there usually isn't a penalty. If it gets too heavy, they may get penalties for roughing, but not fighting.

3) Offsides is where someone goes into the offensive zone before the puck crosses that blue line. If the puck is knocked out, all of the offensive players must exit the zone before the puck crosses the line again.

It's a good time to get into the game, but if you saw the Pens/Flyers game, don't assume that is hockey in it's best sense. One of the local sports talk guys in Chicago was talking about how that was what hockey is. Likely trolling fans but still. Bruins/Caps is a better example of good hockey.

I was in the same boat. I had an inkling that it was having to be in the net before the clock ran out, but wasn't 100%. Good to know for future reference.

Few things. 1) Am I the only one that thinks the referees have been kinda suspect throughout the playoffs? As well as Shanahan not laying down the law on Shea Weber? What I mention the refs for, and I don't blame them for losses or wins, but just questionable calls. Anyone see the 'Hawks game on Saturday night? Jonathan Toews was skating towards the net with the puck. He either shot it or lost it, but did a solid job of avoiding going into the goalie and net. But as he is passing the net on the near-side, Smith reaches out and shoves him away. Toews gets called for goaltender interference. Even after the game the officiating supervisor even said it was an awful call. Why is it getting made?

Secondly on the subject of suspect calls, what are other opinions of the whole Andrew Shaw/Mike Smith debacle? Personally I saw it as a two minute goaltender interference, since Shaw did not extend his elbows and, from my view, there didn't appear to be intent. It looked like Smith was shot. Then once Shaw was given the gate, he was all good. Aren't people that are hit in the head supposed to go to the quiet room regardless? Shenanigans! Shaw will hear from Shanahan tomorrow if further action is taken, and that is likely because Smith sat out of practice yesterday and today. Just because of his actions I can't help but feel this is a ploy to get Shaw suspended, and I will certainly take it back if he is legitimately injured. I suppose we will find out tomorrow if Smith is playing, and if Shaw faces punishment.

2) If you have a Twitter, have you seen all the stuff coming from Canucks fans? Now the LA Kings account may have started it with their awesome tweet of "To everyone in Canada outside of BC, you're welcome.". But since then all of their fans have gotten so butthurt about everything that it is HILARIOUS!!! Threatening Duncan Keith for the Daniel Sedin thing. Saying Dustin Brown is dirty or that the Kings dive. Oh my word it is some of the funniest stuff I've ever read. Though disturbing with all the slurs. And they talk about class. Hilarious. Create a Twitter handle, and follow The Royal Half and LOLVancouver. You will see retweets of such hate, it is scary and funny all at the same time.

3) Overall thoughts. Most of the series are fun to watch. I love 'Yotes/'Hawks and Bruins/Caps especially. The stress everybody probably feels is crazy, and it gets worse in OT. But it's the best playoffs in all of professional sports, so ya gotta take it!

I know. And I los they don't let all this go to their heads. I think they could struggle against Nashville and St. Louis, and probably Detroit. But I wouldn't mind getting some revenge against the Sharks either.

Raffi Torres has been suspended indefinitely pending a in-person hearing on Friday (meaning the NHL can suspend him for 5 or more games) for his nasty, predatory hit on Marián Hossa last night:

This hit, and those like it are exactly what is wrong with the NHL IMO. Look how far the puck is away from Hossa during that hit! Torres' only intent was to hurt Hossa, not to play the puck or to prevent him from anything, other than breathing, perhaps.

So long, Raffi Torres. Enjoy your long, long vacation. Fuckin' scumbag.

Yeah, Raffi Torres is one of the biggest scumbags in the entire league. How he still gets signed is a miracle. It was not a hockey play, not a clean hit. How the hell did the refs not see it? Can't a linemen like motion to a ref to make a call? One of them watched the play happen! Because of my utter disdain for Torres, I hope he gets double digit games. Realistically I wouldn't be surprised if it was only six. Shanahan's inconsistencies make it way too difficult to expect one way or another.

But the biggest thing about this whole hit, the one thing that fans should look at outside of hockey, is that Hossa is doing okay. He left the hospital last night, and according to beat writers that have talked to players today, he is in good spirits. I don't expect him to be back on the ice any time soon, it would be foolish to think so. But as long as he is healthy, that is really all that matters.

Shanahan just needs to be consistent. That has been the most troubling thing, especially this postseason. Whether it is against my favorite team or anyone else's, just make it consistent and people can live with it. I just can't help but wonder how much of the shenanigans that have happened the past week could have been avoided with him taking action against Shea Weber.

Now the question is, does his Pittsburgh Penguin "Get Out of Jail Free" Card expire with Shanny in office, or does the league continue to turn a blind eye to all things dirty committed by 87/71?

Also, LSN — seeing a trend here yet?

Here's hoping that the Bruins can win a big game tonight and take a 3-1 stranglehold in their first round series against the Capitals. It would be great if they can advance to the second round. Home ice advantage should be huge in their second round match against the Senators ;)
