2013 NHL Thread

Acting with deliberate speed in the wake of the news 41-goal scorer Marian Gaborik will require right shoulder surgery that could sideline the sniper into December of next season, Rangers general manager Glen Sather has been in touch with Predators GM David Poile regarding impending Group II free agent winger Alexander Radulov, The Post has learned.

Radulov, who will turn 26 next month, has a lucrative contract offer on the table from CKSA of the KHL, the league in which he played the last four seasons before returning to the Predators for the stretch run and the playoffs, but a well-placed source has told The Post the winger would prefer to continue his career in the NHL.

The 6-1, 190-pounder scored 18 goals as a rookie in 2005-06 and 26 goals the following season before defecting to the KHL with one year remaining on his Entry Level contract.

The degree to which these discussions between Sather and Poile have advanced is unknown, but The Post has learned this is more than the GM “kicking the tires.” The Blueshirts, of course, would have to be given a window in which to conduct contract negotiations with Radulov before agreeing to trade for his rights.

It is unlikely Poile will play hardball, given the alternative is losing him for nothing to the KHL.

http://www.snyrangersblog.com/2012/06/03/buzz-the-rangers-are-going-afte-alexander-radulov/

According to Larry Brooks in the NY Post, the Rangers are attempting to acquire the rights to pending RFA Alexander Radulov of the Nashville Predators.

Brooks writes that Sather and Nashville GM David Poile are beyond the “kicking tires” stage of talking and the Rangers are urgently trying to acquire his rights so that they have a window to try and sign him before July 1.

This is fantastic news. The Rangers, all season, and for a number now, have lacked top-6 scoring talent big-time, and his on/off-ice issues aside for the moment, Radulov absolutely has that. I get that the sample size is small, but we are talking about a player with 102 points in 154 NHL games. Not point-per-game, but offensively speaking a substantial upgrade over what we've got in house right now outside of players like Gáborík, Richards and Kreider. In the shortened regular season he had with the Predators this year, he had 3-4-7 in 9 games, and followed it up with 1-5-6 in 8 games played in the playoffs. I get that he comes with baggage, much like most "enigmatic" Russians do, but something to remember is that if there's one franchise in the NHL that lacks the stereotypical fear of Russian players, it's the New York Rangers, with the Detroit Red Wings following close suit.

I still feel there's a lot of untapped potential with Radulov that could really be whipped into shape here with our staff and coach, and besides — it's not all that often you come across an available 25-year old scoring forward with size (6'1, 200lbs). Especially an available 25-year old scoring forward with size, who could be acquired and retained with reasonable financial figures.

http://forecaster.thehockeynews.com/hockeynews/hockey/player.cgi?4759

ASSETS: Profiles as a classic Russian right wing: A left-handed shooter with excellent shiftiness, stickhandling skills and the ability to finish. Can really dangle and likes the spotlight.

FLAWS: Lacks intensity on a consistent basis and is occasionally prone to hiccups in his own end. Doesn't have enough desire to be the best he can be at the highest level (NHL).

CAREER POTENTIAL: Skilled scoring winger.

It would also signal a bit of a culture change here, which is a GOOD thing, as the team should not get comfortable being hemmed in as a place where only defensive-minded forwards/players come to play. That type of a build will not take your team very far, as the Rangers are already painfully learning.

I've said it a thousand times — the best defense is a GOOD OFFENSE.

That means adding talent, but there’s no use in adding talent if Tortorella won’t exploit it. For instance, if the answer to the question, “Could Alexander Radulov help the Rangers?” is “He’d never be able to play for Tortorella,” then something is askew because that’s pretty much what everyone was saying about Ilya Kovalchuk two years ago.

@TSNBobMcKenzie:
PIT acquires right to Tomas Vokoun from WSH for 7th rd pick. Which suggests Vokoun's new contract in PIT is likely done or will be shortly.

Likely a strong indication that Brent Johnson will not be back for the Penguins as a back-up goaltender.

Vokoun is coming off a pretty dismal, and injury-riddled year, but he's still a better goaltender IMO than Johnson, who's likely to find work elsewhere as a back-up in free agency.

The Montreal Canadiens are expected to name Michel Therrien as the team's next head coach, with an announcement coming in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Therrien will replace interim head coach Randy Cunneyworth, who was removed from the position by general manager Marc Bergevin on May 2.

The 48-year-old Therrien returns to the Canadiens' bench for the first time since he replaced Alain Vigneault as head coach during the 2000-01 season. He worked two-and-a-half seasons at the helm before being replaced by Claude Julien in 2002-03.

Therrien then worked in the AHL where he coached the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins before being named the Pittsburgh Penguins' head coach midway through the 2005-06 season. He worked four seasons in Pittsburgh, leading the team to the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08.

This is interesting. Just to make it clear. The Canadiens are my most hated team, but I still don't like this move. I've never thought Therrien was a great coach (or even a good one). He didn't really get as much as he could've out of a younger Crosby or Malkin IMO. What makes Bergevin think he's going to do anything? Because he certainly won't be getting anything out of Gomez, and if he can I'll eat my words.

Therrien is such a whiney little shit. He'll blend in masterfully in the whiney little shit culture that's become Montréal Canadiens hockey (or at least their organization). I mean, this is the franchise who's city tried to press charges on Zdeno Chara for a hockey play/accident on the ice, because it resulted in an injury to one of their own. Had it been in reverse? My guess? Silence. Crickets. Nothing.

Therrien has history in Montréal, which explains his hire, but I fail to see the positives in this.

As a Bruins fan, I see tremendous positives in this move. The Canadiens are a franchise in disarray, and bringing back a blast from the past only serves to perpetuate the failures. Therrien was ineffective his first time around, and I fully expect him to be equally inept this time around. So from a Boston perspective, this is a tremendous move.

Meanwhile, the Devils owe lenders an $80 million principal payment July 1. Devils owner Jeffrey Vanderbeek is in talks with an investor to pump money into the team to refinance the debt.

Previous talks with different potential investors have fallen through, however, and the NHL was forced to advance the money-losing Devils about $10 million this season.

Should the current talks fall apart, one savvy investor could potentially get a Cup in their portfolio.

So far, despite the Devils' unexpected run to the finals, there has been no significant improvement in the team’s long-term financial picture.

True, the Devils' $20 million regular-season loss will be erased because of the added revenue from the deep postseason run and it will probably ring up an added $7 million in revenue next season from increased sponsorship deals and ticket sales, sources said, but the staggering long-term debt remains.

Even if it approaches the break-even mark again next year, with help from a new collective bargaining agreement, the team still owes too much money, $177 million, to outside lenders.

The Devils declined to comment.

“I’m not thinking about the end right now,” Parise said yesterday when asked if he’d considered there would be inevitable changes to the team at the conclusion of the series. “Hopefully we have a few more games.”

Whenever the end comes, it will mark the first day of the rest of Parise’s professional life, and unless Devils owner Jeff Vanderbeek finds a benefactor by July 1 willing to immediately invest millions into a dramatically front-loaded deal to keep the captain, it’s all but impossible to imagine No. 9 will stay, even if the notion of being a career Devil appeals to him.

Indeed, Parise can expect offers modeled after the nine-year, $60 million contract Brad Richards signed last summer with the Rangers, under which the center is receiving $24 million the first two years, including a $10 million signing bonus last July and an $8 million signing bonus due next month.

Parise, who will turn 28 next month, could attract offers of up to 12 years. He will certainly receive front-loaded, bonus-laden offers from the Rangers and Red Wings, who have millions to spend and the inclination to do so.

The Wild will be in, though Parise might want to think more than twice about going home to join a team in which he would be the best player by leaps and bounds.

Given the financial realities in New Jersey, it’s almost impossible to conjure the scenario in which ownership could cut Parise a $10 million check on July 2. And again, that’s even assuming Parise’s first choice is to remain a Devil.

He is one today and will be one tonight. But once the puck is dropped, the clock will be ticking on the Devils’ season and on the captain’s career in New Jersey.

T-minus-60 and counting.

--

Oh, it's happening. Been saying it ALL year long. Count the seconds, Devils fans, because to quote a wildly appropriate scene from 28 Days Later, the time is really fuckin' nigh!

Sharks, Rangers, Bruins, Wild, Red Wings, etc. will all be in line for his services, and will all have substantially greater chances at signing him, because fact is, as I've said ALL SEASON LONG, the New Jersey Devils are bankrupt, and a stones throw away from franchise collapse due to roughly $117M in debt to outside vendors (including more internally).

Sing it with me, boys...

Na na na na...
Na na na na...
Hey hey hey!
Goodbye....

I'll sing it once the Kings close out the series tonight. They need to get their heads together, but they're probably more than demoralized after the drubbing of Game 3. Someone might invest in them, but if they're that bankrupt, seems to be a mighty big hole to get out of.

Seated behind Coach Peter DeBoer and the New Jersey Devils bench at Staples Center was Taylor Stevens, an amply talented adult video actress whose assets were unmistakably on display in the front row near the glass. Or as she tweeted during the game:

"Yup those are my #boobies against the glass #StanleyCupFinals #kings yaay if u see me on tv lemme know."

Enough hockey fans noticed to make Taylor Stevens and "Boobs Behind DeBoer" trending topics on Twitter during the Devils' 3-1 victory over the Kings. Paul Bissonnette congratulated her for giving CBC "it's biggest viewing audience in network history and half the people didn't even notice the game." Deadspin, Busted Coverage and Guyism all noted her attendance.

She also helped create perhaps the greatest highlight of the Stanley Cup Playoffs, as DeBoer made a no-look pass:

Boobs Behind Deboer! :lmao:

This is probably the funniest story to come out of the playoffs in decades.

@adater:
Avs sign David Jones to four year, $16 million deal, per Denver Post

http://avalanche.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=634116

“David has been one of our top offensive players over the past two seasons,” said Avalanche General Manager/Executive Vice President Greg Sherman. “He is a product of our organization who has developed into a proven goal scorer. We are pleased to have him under contract as he enters the prime of his career.”

--

Shame he won't make it to UFA. I'd have certainly inquired about him for the Rangers, who could really have benefited from his scoring prowess, but the Avs need his goal-scoring just as much, if not more, and this is a fair deal for a 20/25-goal scorer.

Right in line with other deals signed for similar players/results.

@TheFourthPeriod:
As per the Sharks announcement, they've acquired the rights to D Brad Stuart from Detroit for a 2014 conditional draft pick.

#SJSharks acquire rights to D Brad Stuart from @DetroitRedWings for a conditional draft pick in 2014.
http://t. ...

--

Fully expect Stuart to re-sign with the Sharks, as it's been speculated fro months on end now that he intended to finish his career out west with his family (who live in the Bay area).

This deal will give the wings something for a player who was undoubtedly leaving, so it should be looked at as a positive, because the Wings were never going to get "full value" for a player everyone knew was going to California.

Fully expect them to go HARD after Suter now. We're talking career deal here.

@TSNBobMcKenzie:
BOS agrees to terms with Chris Kelly on four-year, $12M deal and Gregory Campbell on three-year, $4.8M deal. AAVs of $3M and $1.6M.

--

Solid deals for both, IMO.

Kelly was tremendous for them since they've acquired him, and he's one of the most important guys in that room. He had 3 points in 7 games with them in their pretty miserable post-season and finished the year with 20-19-39, so they're re-signing a 20-goal scoring third-line center — something not very common in the NHL right now.

$3M cap hit for a 3rd line center and $1.6M for a 4th line center. Both are solid deals, for sure. These guys each bring a lot to the table.

For those still angry/concerned about the Bernier 5:00 boarding major that cost the Devils a chance in Game 6, this is for you:

This play was clearly a boarding penalty for one reason, and one reason alone: Bernier NEVER TRIED TO PLAY THE PUCK. Never. Not once. His sole intention was to hit Scuderi, which says to me that his mind was simply not on making a hockey play, but rather on punishment. While that in and of itself is not a bad thing, when coupled next to the fact that he obviously injured AND boarded a player, the 5:00 major was absolutely deserved and regardless of the color of his jersey or the team he plays for, the subsequent game miscondcut and power play awarded to the Kings was spot on and a fantastic marker of officiating.

Scuderi is traveling paralel to the boards as he attempts to play the puck but is ALREADY turning to bring the puck back around the boards to his left by the time Bernier is lining him up. Bernier ABSOLUTELy had the opportunity to (a) play the puck, not the man, and (b) let up on the hit that he knew his opponent would be in a vulnerable and defenseless position on.

@mirtle:
From the NHL's boarding rule: "The onus is on the player applying the check to ensure his opponent is not in a defenseless position and if so, he must avoid or minimize the contact." This is why Bernier, not Scuderi, is to blame here.

The defense rests.

Team officials have been closely guarding their playoff revenues, but a Star-Ledger analysis culled from 2011 audit figures combined with recent projections from published reports show the cash-strapped hockey team has taken in close to $32.3 million during their extended 2012 playoff run.

The biggest chunk of playoff money came from $26.2 million in postseason ticket sales, according to the newspaper’s review. Concessions brought in another big piece with the Devils selling $3.75 million worth of hot dogs, soda and beer during playoffs. Sponsors kicked in $1.1 million to the Devils’ bottom line during playoffs. Devils merchandise also gave the team an influx of about $1 million million worth of jerseys, T-shirts, and hats.

While those numbers are great news for a team known lately for their financial troubles as much as their athletic success, experts remain skeptical that the infusion will save them from looming fiscal insolvency. With more than $200 million in overall debt and $77 million due this summer, experts remain divided about the long-term impacts of the newfound cash.

"If they take all of that and attribute it to debt, they can make a small dent in it sure," said Scott Rosner, a sports business professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. "Will that attract investors? I guess it could make it marginally more attractive."

--

Please tell me again with that much debt still looming, 4 forward positions, 1 defensive position and 2 goaltending positions to fill, how exactly this team intends to keep Zach Parise?

Guess Brodeur is comign back for league minimum, eh?

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-puck-daddy/gary-bettman-could-over-jersey-devils-according-ny-060901986--nhl.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
Well, the NY Post did what it always does for Devils ownership stories: Provided needles for those party balloons.

In an exclusive on Monday, John Kosman reports that the NHL is preparing to take over the Devils if the excrement hits the oscillator in August:

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman is preparing to take control of the money-losing hockey franchise in the event Vanderbeek fails to refinance the Devils' debt before a looming Aug. 14 deadline, The Post has learned.

In recent days, the commissioner's office has told potential suitors to be ready in case he moves on the team and pushes Vanderbeek aside, a source close to the situation said. Vanderbeek is near a deal to sell a majority stake to a mystery investor, which would allow him to keep control of the Eastern Conference champions, one source said. The proceeds from a sale would be used to repay lenders much of the $77 million in past due debt.

Bettman noted at his "state of the NHL address" on May 30 that Vanderbeek was working on an "equity raise" for the team that he hoped he could "pull off" in the next few weeks.

The Post reports that Bettman and the NHL would likely take over before the August deadline, "to give suitors enough time to study the team's financials and make an offer to lenders before the bankruptcy deadline, according to sources."

This is probably the NHL signaling that taking over the Devils would be the last resort; and not necessarily that any solution to their ownership and debt problems is falling apart.

It's a Plan B ... and even then, Vanderbeek could buy himself some time by placing the team in bankruptcy.

--

With the floundering Coyotes, this'll now make for two league-controlled teams that can't actually afford to sustain their own franchises.

Pathetic.

Again, please tell me how this failing franchise intends to keep Zach Parise? Enjoy the mid-west, kid! Get off that sinking ship while you still can!

Minnesota and the Detroit Red Wings will undoubtedly be offering the most amount per year to him, and I highly doubt any team out-bids the Wild for his services.

Both clubs have a ton of cap space and the strong desire/need for a star/scorer, and from everything I've heard, he wants to be closer to home (Minnesota), so don't be shocked when either team signs him.

Sounding more and more like I'm about to check off two more boxes on my wish list!

Reports this morning cite Brodeur will test free agency, likely due mostly to the shit financial situation in New Jersey, which means the Devils don't/won't have the money to retain Parise, Salvador or Hedberg either!

The best part of it all? The Devils kept their first round pick this year (29th overall), instead of giving it up, despite knowing that they could potentially go into next season as a lottery team having lost half their club to free agency!

@SportsnetSpec:
News that Brodeur will test UFA market tells us NJD doesn't have $$ to sign Zach Parise either. Bryce Salvador may also look elsewhere.

@mirtle:
Can you imagine if Devils lose Brodeur and Parise due to ownership issues? Shows how little players want to play in Coyotes-like situation.

Ba da ba ba ba, I'm lovin' it!

I think the Wings are out of the running for Parise. The rumblings around here are that they are focusing all their attention on Ryan Suter and will have a huge offer to him by 12:01 AM Sunday. Parise would be great but I think the Wings are looking at the void left by Brad Stuart leaving and of course, Lidstrom hanging up the skates. They figure adding Suter and a guy like Semin is better than getting Parise and a weaker d-man.

They will probably make a decent offer to Parise right away but won't get into a bidding war, figuring they'll be outbid but at least they tried. I expect us to snap up Semin right away regardless of what happens with Suter.

I wouldn't doubt that, considering they're out of the running for Schultz as well as per yesterday. They need at LEAST one defender out of free agency, and Suter is far and away the best possible option for them.

Parise I see ending up in Pittsburgh or Minnesota.

Cold blooded, IDR. LOL. But its sad that a team fresh off a Finals appearance is so far in the toilet. I know different things have an overall effect of clubs. But its staggering how issues like this happen. They could move them somewhere more viable. Maybe send them down to Atlanta, or bring the Whalers back. I don't know about their markets, but its just a thought.

Report: Zach Parise is headed for free agency
Sunday, 07.01.2012 / 11:07 AM
By Dan Rosen - NHL.com Senior Writer / NHL Free Agency 2012 blog

Zach Parise reportedly won't sign with the New Jersey Devils before the free-agent market opens at noon ET Sunday so he can become an unrestricted free agent.

Parise, who is the top forward and arguably the top unrestricted free agent available, met with Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello in Toronto on Saturday night, according to a tweet from TSN's Bob McKenzie. However, McKenzie tweeted at 11 a.m ET Sunday that while the Devils are not out of the running, Parise wanted to test his value on the open market.

The Pittsburgh Penguins, Minnesota Wild, Detroit Red Wings, Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings and New York Rangers have been linked to Parise's name as being the most interested. Parise indicated two days after the Devils season ended that he would not sign with the Rangers.

Parise is good friends with Penguins captain Sidney Crosby, who is expected to sign his 12-year, $104.4 million contract extension Sunday. The Penguins are roughly $12.26 million under the $70.2 million salary cap, according to Capgeek.com.

The Wild will try to sell Parise on coming home as he is from Minneapolis. Minnesota has $18.49 million in cap space.

Detroit, with roughly $24 million in cap space, figures to be in play for both Parise and Ryan Suter, the top unrestricted free agent defenseman available. The Predators expect Suter to circle back to them after fielding offers.

Philadelphia is reportedly involved in trade discussions regarding Columbus captain Rick Nash. If the Flyers can make that deal happen, perhaps their interest in Parise will wane since Nash comes with a salary cap hit of $7.8 million for the next six seasons.

As for the Kings, they tried and failed to get the top free agent forwards in each of the past two summers: Ilya Kovalchuk in 2010 and Brad Richards in 2011. However, the Los Angeles Times is reporting that they are undeterred and plan to target Parise with roughly $11.8 million in cap space. If the Kings are able to acquire Parise, there's a good chance that burly forward Dustin Penner won't return to L.A.

Parise spent this past season as the captain of the New Jersey Devils, leading them into the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 2003. The Devils lost in Game 6 to the Los Angeles Kings.

Parise had 31 goals and 38 assists for 69 points in 82 games after missing all but 13 games of the previous season with a knee injury. He has played his entire seven-year career with the Devils after they drafted him in the first-round of the 2003 NHL Draft and has 194 goals and 216 assists for 410 points in 502 games.

A.) It should be noted this doesn't mean Praise won't be back with the Devils next year, he could very well test the FA market out & learn that NJ is the best place for him, after all he did come within 2 games from winning the cup with them this year.

B.) I am soooo fucking happy to hear Praise "indicate" he won't be signing with the Rangers, because I hate the fucking Rangers.

C.) If he doesn't return to Jersey, then I hope he ends up signing with either Det. or Minny, for no other reason than those are two of my favorite teams, plus Minny could really use him. I hate Philly almost as much as I do the Rangers, so fuck them. The Pens already have enough talent with Crosby, Malkin & others. LA just beat NJ for the Cup, do they really need to add insult to injury by poaching away one of their best players? I think their team is good enough to make another run as it stands now, so unless they lose a major piece of that team I really see no reason for them to go after him anyway.

I was surprised to read that column in the Times. I wouldn't mind seeing Parise play in a Kings uniform. At the same time it might be unlikely. Money talks, and we are talking about playing for the current champs. But I think he's headed to Minnesota.

Thus far the Rangers have brought in Arron Asham and Michael Haley to appease the loss of Brandon Prust to the Canadiens — two moves I'm absolutely fine with. Asham I've always wanted, because he's a total gamer, and Haley has a lot of untapped potential. Prust at $2.5M a season is absurd. He's a fourth-line penalty-killer/energy guy and part-time pugilist. Giving him that deal would have been ridiculous, and I said the same when Avery was asking for $3.5M and when the Rangers offered Chris Neil $3.5M to leave Ottawa a few years back. You don't pay bottom-6 players like that unless you are organizationally devoid of them, which the Rangers are absolutely not.

Best of luck to Prust in Montréal, though. Always liked the guy, and I don't blame him one bit for taking the money.

Parise has reportedly narrowed his search to the Penguins or Wild, which has me hoping he picks the Wild and goes home for the feel-good story of the summer, as opposed to signing on with the Penguins and earning the spurn for the next decade, plus, from Rangers, Devils, etc. fans alike — all of whom will see it as betrayal.

Nash is also, by all reports, the guy the Rangers want, and have wanted since last year. Once Parise signs, all reports indicate that moves will be made quickly on the Nash and Bobby Ryan fronts.

My guess? Parise signs with the Wild, Rangers trade for Nash, Flyers trade for Bobby Ryan and Ryan Suter signs a lifetime deal with the Red Wings.

Just read on yahoo that Brodeur re-signed with the Devils for two more years. So much for hanging it up. While that may be somewhat good for the Devils, it doesn't look to be a long time fix considering the bankruptcy issues.
